This book presents the results of a research project on former child soldiers and rebels in northern Uganda and their “reintegration” into society after their return to civilian life. The authors investigate their biographies and the social figurations or relationships between them and members of the civilian population that emerged following their return, not least in their families of origin, and show which conditions facilitate or hinder their “(re)integration” into civilian life. The discussion also shows what distinguishes them from former members of rebel groups in the neighboring region of West Nile, in respect of their history and how they were recruited, as well as in their present situation and social position

No full textSoftcover, 17x24Welche Organisationsform von Religionsunterricht findet an Schulen Akzeptanz? Welche Formate von ‚Religion im Schulleben‘ bewähren sich? Entlang dieser Kernfragen entwirft die Dissertationsschrift Perspektiven für religiöse Bildung an den in den 2010er-Jahren entstandenen Sekundarschulformen. Mit der empirischen Studie wird ein Fokus auf Charakteristika dieser bisher wenig beachteten Schulformen gerichtet. Dabei werden religionspädagogische Themen mit Fragen der Schulentwicklungsforschung verbunden. Die Datengrundlage der Studie bilden 17 Interviews mit Lehrkräften und Schulleitenden. Diese wurden an niedersächsischen Ober- und Gesamtschulen geführt und mittels qualitativer Inhaltsanalyse ausgewertet. Die Studie zeigt, dass Formate religiöser Bildung vielerorts wichtige Beiträge zum Bildungsauftrag der Schule leisten, dass sich aber manche Formen verändern müssen. Dabei spielen engagierte Lehrkräfte sowie die einzelschulspezifische Passung wichtige Rollen. Die Ergebnisse sind nicht nur für den wissenschaftlichen Diskurs von Interesse, sondern auch für Schulpraktiker sowie kirchliche Kooperationspartner.The dissertation deals with perspectives on Religious Education at German comprehensive schools which were created during the 2010s. It searches for conditions and potentials of Religious Education at the referred types of school. It especially focuses on models for Religious Education as a school subject, successful activities regarding ‘Religion and school life’ as well as on characteristics of new comprehensive schools. It combines both questions on Religious Education as a subject and on school development. The empirical study is based on 17 interviews with teachers and school principals at so-called ‘Oberschulen’ and ‘Integrierte Gesamtschulen’, which were analyzed by qualitative content analysis. The study provides results to a neglected area of research: many studies on Religious Education or Educational Science look at grammar schools. The study creates starting points for diverse discourses and target groups. It demonstrates that Religious Education makes an important contribution to school education, but that it is time to modify some approaches and activities

European Studies and Europe: Twenty Years of Euroculture
No full textSoftcover, 17x24In 1998, the Master’s programme Euroculture started with the aim to offer, amid the many existing programmes that focused on European institutional developments, a European studies curriculum that puts the interplay of culture, society and politics in Europe at the heart of the curriculum. Among other topics, the programme focused on how Europe and European integration could be contextualised and what these concepts meant to European citizens. In June 2018, Euroculture celebrated its twentieth anniversary with a conference to discuss not only the changes within the MA Euroculture itself, but also to reflect upon the changes in the field of European studies over the last two decades writ large. This volume brings together the main findings of this conference.
Since its start, Euroculture has engaged with European studies by providing a space for cooperation between more mainstream-oriented research on the one hand and a variety of sociological, historiographical, post-structuralist, and post-colonial perspectives on Europe on the other. This has enabled Euroculture to contextualise the emergence and development of European institutions historically and in relation to broader socio-political and cultural processes. Its methodology, that treats theoretical and analytical work, classroom teaching and engaged practice as integral parts of critical inquiry, has significantly contributed to its ability to continuously enhance scholarly discussions.
The volume is divided into two parts, which are intrinsically linked. The first part contains reflections on the field of European studies and on concepts, analytical perspectives and methodologies that have emerged through interdisciplinary dialogues in Euroculture/European studies. The second part contains contributions that reflect upon the Euroculture programme itself, discussing both changes and continuities in the curriculum and didactic methods, outlining possible venues for further developing the educational and research programme that is firmly embedded in a network of partners that have been closely cooperating over a span of no less than two decades

No full textSoftcover, 17x24Die freien Berufe sind nicht nur in rechtlicher Hinsicht dynamischen Entwicklungen unterworfen und damit einhergehenden stetigen Rechtsänderungen ausgesetzt. Eine grundlegende Neuerung im Recht der freien Berufe der Steuerberater stellt die Zulassung der Tätigkeit als Syndikus-Steuerberater dar. Das Steuerberatungsgesetz ermöglicht seit dem Jahr 2008 dem Beruf als Syndikus-Steuerberater nachzugehen. Demgegenüber war es beispielsweise Rechtsanwälten schon seit Jahrzehnten möglich, als Syndikusanwalt zu arbeiten, wobei zuletzt im Jahre 2016 das Zulassungsverfahren für die Syndikusanwälte grundlegend novelliert wurde. Diese Arbeit widmet sich den verschiedenen rechtlichen und praktischen Auswirkungen, die das Zusammenspiel der freiberuflichen Tätigkeit als Steuerberater mit der Tätigkeit eines Steuerberaters im Anstellungsverhältnis mit sich bringt. Insbesondere ein Vergleich mit der Rechtslage zum Syndikusanwalt verleiht diesen Fragestellungen Aktualität und Relevanz. Einen Schwerpunkt bildet hierbei die Analyse, ob und wie sich ein Syndikus-Steuerberater von der gesetzlichen Rentenversicherungspflicht befreien lassen kann.The liberal professions are subject to an ever changing legal basis and thus constantly undergo minor or major amendments. A fundamental innovation in the current law governing the liberal professions of tax consultants is the authorization to work as in-house tax consultants. Since 2008, the Tax Consultancy Act has made possible to pursue the profession of in-house tax advisor, while lawyers were allowed to work in-house for decades already, with the last amendment of the legal regulations from 2016. This paper deals with the various legal and practical implications of the interactions between the freelance activity as a tax consultant and the activity of in-house tax consultants in an employment relationship. A detailed comparison of the legal basis for tax consultants with that of in-house lawyers is of special interest in light of the current ambiguous legal situation. Special focus is a thorough analysis of the legal question whether or not an in-house tax adviser can be exempted from the obligatory pension insurance

Based on a historical, object-focused ethnography and praxeology she itemizes how during the establishing phase of the collection institutionalized in 1832 the scientific practices and epistemic interests mutually influenced one another and found expression in the botanical specimens themselves. Each of the five chapters is dedicated to one practice – opening up the collection, ascribing values, acquiring plant material, doing research on herbarium sheets and teaching with herbarium sheets. The Deep Learning Seminar at the University of Göttingen follows the central notion of the Humboldtian model of higher education and offers graduate students of applied statistics the opportunity to conduct their own research. The quality of the results motivated us to publish the most promising seminar papers in this volume. For the selected papers a full peer review process was conducted.
The presented contributions cover a broad range of deep learning topics. The articles in the first part of this volume may serve the reader as introduction to deep learning algorithms. Subsequently, research applications allow the reader to gain deep insights into some of the latest developments in the field of artificial intelligence
