Göttinger „Universitätsverwandte im weiteren Sinne“ als Akteure im britisch-deutschen Kulturtransfer des 18. und frühen 19. Jahrhunderts
No full textSoftcover, 17x24Die Universität Göttingen hatte als Neugründung zur Zeit der hannoversch-britischen Personalunion von Beginn an eine besondere Verbindung zu Großbritannien, das als kulturell etablierte Nation im 18. Jahrhundert auch zunehmend ins Blickfeld der deutschen Bildungselite geriet. Da jedoch nur wenige Deutsche über Kenntnisse der englischen Sprache verfügten, wurden Übersetzungen entscheidend für den Zugang zu britischem Wissen.
Buchhändler und Übersetzer wurden zu kulturellen Vermittlern. Angehörige beider Gruppen - insbesondere weibliche - verfügten oft über eine umfangreiche, doch nicht institutionalisierte Bildung. In der Universitätsstadt Göttingen trafen sie auf interkulturell interessierte und oftmals anglophile Gelehrte, mit denen sie Arbeitsbeziehungen ganz unterschiedlicher Art eingingen.
Die Untersuchung beleuchtet die Arbeit von sechs sogenannten „Universitätsverwandten im weiteren Sinne“. Dieser Ausdruck bezeichnete den offiziellen Status der Universitätsbuchhändler und wurde hier auch für drei Übersetzerinnen übernommen, die als Töchter von Göttinger Professoren ebenfalls als „universitätsverwandt im weiteren Sinne“ bezeichnet werden können.
Der Fokus der Untersuchung liegt auf der Art der Kooperation dieser „Zwischenhändler des Wissens“ mit den Mitgliedern der Gelehrtenrepublik bei der Verbreitung des Schrifttums der Aufklärungszeit sowie der Frage, wie die zeitgenössische ambivalente Auslegung des Gleichheitsgedankens diese Kooperation beeinflusste.As a newly founded university at the time of the personal union between Hanover and Great Britain, the University of Göttingen had a special connection to Britain from the very beginning. As a culturally established nation, Britain also increasingly came into the focus of the German educational elite in the 18th century. However, since few Germans had any knowledge of English, translations became crucial for access to British knowledge
Booksellers and translators became cultural intermediaries. Members of both groups - especially females - often had an extensive, but not institutionalized, education. In the university city of Göttingen, they met scholars who were interculturally interested and many of whom were Anglophiles. With these scholars, booksellers and translators established working relationships of very different kinds.
The study sheds light on the work of six so-called "Universitätsverwandte im weiteren Sinne (university relatives in a broader sense)". This term referred to the official status of university booksellers and was adopted here for three female translators who, as daughters of Göttingen professors, can also be described as "university-related in a broader sense"
The study focuses on the nature of the cooperation between these 'middlemen of knowledge' and the members of the scholars' republic regarding the distribution of Enlightenment-era literature, and on the question of how the ambivalent interpretation of the idea of equality at the time influenced this cooperation

More-than-human temporalities of Scottish rewilding landscapes

Against the urgencies of the Anthropocene, rewilding projects offer hope by imagining radical visions of biodiverse futures that promise liveability not just to humans but a large host of species. Based on multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Scotland, this study explores the diverse multispecies temporalities that come to matter within rewilding.
Scottish rewilding landscapes are populated by various beings and absences that blur rigid categorisations of linear temporality into past, present, and future. The ghosts of extirpated species continue to shape the becoming of landscapes, and the unruly presence of invasive alien species complicate the convivial ethics of rewilding initiatives. Following the temporal entanglements of various Scottish beasts, this book describes the interconnections between time, death, and belonging in storied landscapes

Der wissensanthropologische Fokus dieser Studie liegt auf den aktuellen Bedingungen bei der Zucht von „Hannoveranern“, einer der weltweit größten und am weitesten verbreiteten Pferdezuchten. Die Autorin begleitet landwirtschaftliche Familienbetriebe, die Hannoveraner Pferde züchten, und folgt der Entwicklung einzelner Pferdeindividuen von der Geburt bis zum erfolgreichen Athleten. Der Blick liegt dabei auf der Genese und dem Austausch verschiedener Wissensbestände und -formen. Dahinter stehen die leitenden Fragen: Was ist Pferdewissen und wie verändert es sich gegenwärtig? Pferdewissen akkumuliert sich im gemeinsam geteilten Alltag zwischen Züchter*innen und Pferden und weiteren vielfältigen Akteur*innen und Entitäten dieser Multispecies-Konstellation. Videografische Vignetten und Fotografien erschließen weitere Zugänge zu den vor allem inkorporierten Wissensbeständen und -praxen landwirtschaftlich geprägter Pferdezucht, die im Mittelpunkt der Ethnografie stehen.Knowledge about horses and horse breeding is a cultural asset, which has evolved over centuries. At the same time, it is an essential economic commodity. The anthropological focus on knowledge of this study is on the current parameters of breeding the “Hannoveraner”, one of the world’s largest and also most popular horse breeds. The author conducts participatory observations on agricultural family farms that breed them and follows the development of individual horses from birth to successful athletes. The aim is to identify the genesis and exchange of the various stocks and forms of knowledge. The guiding questions of the analysis are: What is equine knowledge and how is it currently changing? Equine knowledge accumulates between breeders and horses and the diverse other actors and entities of this multispecies constellation in their shared everyday life. Videographic vignettes and photographs open up further access to the, primarily incorporated, knowledges and practices of horse breeding in agricultural environments, which are at the center of the ethnography

Bearing this in mind, the project ECI: From A to Z aimed to promote the knowledge and use of the European Citizens’ Initiative within the higher education arena by engaging investigators and students from four different Universities (University of Coimbra; Georg-August University of Göttingen; Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iaşi and the University of Vigo) to work together to share their concerns and common views on the European Union role and policies.
This publication describes the methodology followed and results reached under the project, but more than that, it is a practical toolkit for all who wish to know more about the European Citizens’ Initiative and how to put it in motion

Das zweite Kolloquium befasste sich mit der „Digitalisierung bei Massenverfahren“, wobei sich in diesem Band die Beiträge von Prof. Dr. Caroline Meller-Hannich, Dr. Annekathrin Schmoll, Anna Katharina Zitt und Dr. Christopher Unseld befinden. Im dritten Kolloquium ging es um das bislang kaum diskutierte Thema „Digitale Betreuten- und zu Betreuendenanhörung“. Dieser Tagungsband enthält dazu die Beiträge von Prof. Dr. Anika Gomille, Prof. Dr. Christian Gomille und Bernhard Klasen. Sociological Perspectives on Processes of Violence

People are persecuted, incarcerated, tortured or deported on the basis of their political beliefs, gender, ethnic or ethno-national belonging, religious affiliation, and other socio-political categories. People flee or are displaced in the context of collective violence such as wars, rebellions, coups, environmental disasters or armed conflicts. After migrating, but not exclusively in this context, people find themselves suddenly isolated, cut off from their networks of belonging, their biographical projects and their collective histories. Personal and institutional networks surrounding educational science in Göttingen from the 1960s to the present are being analysed
