Ihrer wird bis in die Gegenwart in Reden, Vorträgen und Denkmälern gedacht. Doch so ohne weiteres kann im 21. Jahrhundert nicht an die Ereignisse von 1837 angeknüpft werden. Was damals geschehen, seither verändert und heute daraus zu lernen ist, soll hier bedacht werden.The ‘Göttingen Seven’ – professors who opposed the abolition of the constitution by the King of Hanover in 1837 and were subsequently dismissed – set a milestone in the history of the university and the constitution. They are commemorated to this day in speeches, lectures and monuments. However, the events of 1837 cannot be taken up so easily in the 21st century. What happened then, what has changed since then and what we can learn from it today will be considered here

No full textHardcover, 17x24Diese Dissertation widmet sich dem Œuvre des Münchener Malerfürsten Friedrich August von Kaulbach, welcher zu Lebzeiten als "Damenporträtist" Berühmtheit erlangte.
Durch die intensive Auseinandersetzung mit seinem bisher kaum beachteten Nachlass und eine detaillierte Analyse der, wenig wissenschaftlich bearbeiteten, Handzeichnungen Kaulbachs, ermöglicht diese Studie neue Perspektiven auf seine künstlerische Entwicklung und seine Rolle innerhalb der Gesellschaft um 1900. Es wird veranschaulicht wie Kaulbachs Kunst von den gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen seiner Zeit geprägt wurde und umgekehrt zur Tradierung wilhelminischer Geschlechternormen und Werte beigetragen hat.
Der erste Teil der Schrift besteht aus einer Untersuchung von Kaulbachs Gemälden, Zeichnungen, Autochromfotografien und Skizzenbüchern. Werkanalysen zweier enger Bekannter Kaulbachs, Franz von Lenbach und Franz von Stuck, erlauben die Rekonstruktion der Entwicklung von Kaulbachs Porträtstil sowie seines technischen Vorgehens. Vertieft wird dieses umfassende Bild von Leben und Arbeitsweise eines Münchener Malerfürsten durch familiäre Fotografien sowie Auszüge aus privaten Briefen und Notizen.
Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit erfolgt eine detaillierte, präventiv-konservatorische Bestandsaufnahme und Zustandsbeschreibung für einige Handzeichnungen des Künstlers aus dem Nachlass.This dissertation is concerned with the largely forgotten Munich portraitist Friedrich August von Kaulbach (1850–1920). The focus is on the artist’s numerous portraits of women, which in their entirety offer new insights into the portrayal of female roles and identities in the art world of the German Empire.
A systematic review of the extensive legacy in the artist’s villa in Bavaria and the integration of art-historical and socio-historical contextualization provide a comprehensive picture of Kaulbach's work and its significance for the development of portrait painting at the end of the 19th century. This research especially takes the portraits of women by the once celebrated “ladies’ portraitist” into account. These offer an insight into the social standing and expectations of ‘the woman’ at the end of 19th century.
A second point of interest is the examination of the hand drawings contained in the artist's estate. Together with Kaulbach's biography, the analysis of the hand drawings and other archival documents provides new insights into the social-cultural context and allows assertions to be made about art production and the role of women in the art world of Kaulbach's time
X-ray Imaging of Cavitation Dynamics with Free-Electron Laser Pulses
No full textSoftcover, 17x24Cavitation dynamics are fast non-equilibrium hydrodynamic processes involving matter at extreme states. A first relevant mechanism is the light-matter interaction during (ultrafast) laser-induced optical breakdown and plasma formation. The following bubble formation, or similarly, the collapse of cavitation bubbles involves violent dynamics and the generation of shock waves. Finally, the energy-focusing during the compression of matter in a collapsing bubble can lead to the emission of light, i.e. sonoluminescence. In current research, the spatial and temporal scales of interest have often reached the limits of common experimental techniques.
In the present work, we have explored time-resolved phase-contrast holography with single hard X-ray Free-Electron Laser pulses as a novel and versatile method to study cavitation dynamics. Enabled by highly brilliant XFEL radiation, this technique allows a unique view on fast (hydrodynamic) processes. Outstanding features are a high spatial resolution, no distortion by curved phase-boundaries and a quantitative contrast, based on the electron density of the sample. This thesis focuses on three experiments carried out at the European XFEL, investigating the scenarios of (i) femtosecond laser-induced breakdown and filamentation, (ii) the spherical collapse of a single sonoluminescent cavitation bubble and (iii) collapsing cavitation bubbles close to a solid boundary

No full textSoftcover, 17x24The name DGGTB (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Geschichte und Theorie der Biologie; German Society for the History and Philosophy of Biology) reflects recent history as well as German tradition. The Society is a relatively late addition to a series of German societies of science and medicine that began with the “Deutsche Gesellschaft für Geschichte der Medizin und der Naturwissenschaften”, founded in 1910 by Leipzig University’s Karl Sudhoff (1853-1938), who wrote: “We want to establish a ‘German’ society in order to gather German-speaking historians together in our special disciplines so that they form the core of an international society…”. Yet Sudhoff, at this time of burgeoning academic internationalism, was “quite willing” to accommodate the wishes of a number of founding members and “drop the word German in the title of the Society and have it merge with an international society”. The founding and naming of the Society at that time derived from a specific set of historical circumstances, and the same was true some 80 years later when in 1991, in the wake of German reunification, the “Deutsche Gesellschaft für Geschichte und Theorie der Biologie” was founded. From the start, the Society has been committed to bringing studies in the history and philosophy of biology to a wide audience, using for this purpose its Jahrbuch für Geschichte und Theorie der Biologie. Parallel to the Jahrbuch, the Verhandlungen zur Geschichte und Theorie der Biologie has become the by now traditional medium for the publication of papers delivered at the Society’s annual meetings. In 2005 the Jahrbuch was renamed Annals of the History and Philosophy of Biology, reflecting the Society’s internationalist aspirations in addressing comparative biology as a subject of historical and philosophical studies

Behandelt werden die großen Themen des europäischen Rechts und des Verfahrensrechts, aber auch die Ausformungen in zivilrechtlicher, arbeitsrechtlicher und strafrechtlicher Hinsicht.
Der vorliegende Band beinhaltet die Beiträge des Deutsch-Ungarischen Symposiums der Rechtswissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Eötvös Loránd Universität Budapest und der Juristischen Fakultät der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen vom 30. und 31. Mai 2024. Er ist Beleg für die fruchtbare Zusammenarbeit zwischen beiden Fakultäten.Progress and regression in the law can be observed in many respects. They become more clearly visible in the long-term perspective of legal history. However, they are also the subject of contemporary historical circumstances. Some political changes and other circumstances influence the development of the law. The diverse constellations become visible in the individual studies and open up a general perspective. The major topics of European law and procedural law are addressed, as well as the forms in civil law, labor law and criminal law.
This volume contains the contributions of the German-Hungarian Symposium of the Faculty of Law of the Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest and the Faculty of Law of the Georg August University of Göttingen on May 30 and 31 in 2024 and is evidence of the fruitful cooperation between the two faculties

Dabei erfolgt die Übernahme der Pflegeverantwortung nicht immer freiwillig, sondern vollzieht sich in einem Spannungsfeld aus traditionellen bäuerlichen Werten, vertraglichen Verpflichtungen, familialen Konflikten und Emanzipationsbestrebungen. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird folgenden Fragestellungen nachgegangen:
Wie kommt es dazu, dass einige Frauen auf landwirtschaftlichen Betrieben die Pflege Angehöriger als sehr belastend empfinden, während andere von einer bereichernden Tätigkeit sprechen?
Gibt es biographische Konstellationen, die dazu führen, dass pflegebedingte Belastungen nur indirekt geäußert werden oder begünstigen bestimmte Biographien eine besonders hohe Toleranz gegenüber pflegebedingten Belastungen?
Wie gelingt es Frauen, die Pflege Angehöriger nach anfänglicher Übernahme wieder abzugeben oder von Beginn an abzulehnen?
Unter welchen Bedingungen wirken Männer an der Pflege mit oder übernehmen diese hauptverantwortlich?
Ausgewählte Fallstudien zeigen unterschiedliche Bewältigungsstrategien der Betroffenen auf und geben tiefe Einblicke in die Lebens- und Belastungssituation von Pflegepersonen auf landwirtschaftlichen Betrieben in Deutschland. Die Studie liefert zudem Hinweise darauf, dass die Belastungen Pflegender in der Landwirtschaft leicht unterschätzt werden können.In agriculture, family members in need of care are traditionally nursed at home, usually by the women on the farm. However, taking on the responsibility of care is not always voluntary, but takes place in a field of tension between milieu-specific values, contractual obligations, family conflicts and emancipation efforts. Against this background, the following questions are explored:
Why do some women on farms perceive caring for relatives as very stressful, while others describe it as an enriching activity?
Are there biographical constellations that lead to care-related stress being expressed only indirectly, or do certain biographies promote a particularly high tolerance of care-related stress?
How do women manage to hand over the care of relatives after initially taking it on, or to refuse it from the beginning?
Under what conditions do men participate in caregiving or take on primary responsibility for it?
Selected case studies highlight different coping strategies and provide deep insights into the living and stress situations of carers on farms in Germany. The study also provides evidence that care-related burdens in agriculture can easily be underestimated
