This paper examines the insight of OER initiatives, benefits, and challenges based on a survey designed to gauge the students’ perceptions of adopting OER. The survey was conducted in January 2024 among 116 students from 12 Faculties at Rajshahi University, Bangladesh. An overwhelming majority of respondents (99.14%) strongly agree that OER includes research, teaching, and learning resources accessible to everyone. Most respondents (97.41%) agree that UGC Digital Library (UDL) plays a significant role in facilitating access to a wide range of digital academic materials, helping higher education institutions to integrate and disseminate OER (x̄ = 1.97, σ = 0.16). OER is also considered as a popular and efficient method for collaborative learning (99.14%; x̄ = 1.01; σ = 0.09). However, there are numerous obstacles to developing OER in Bangladeshi educational institutions. To promote OER in higher education, frequent capacity-building programs should be conducted within educational institutions to establish sustainable OER-based services (50%; x̄ = 1.51; σ = 0.52). Everyone has the right to access accurate information. Therefore, OER transforms the approach to education by promoting a more humanistic view of knowledge

Israel-Hamas War: Protracted Social Conflict and Challenges for Conflict Resolution

    Get PDF
The ongoing Israel-Hamas war, an off-shoot of the broader Israel-Palestine conflict led to widespread violence, displacements, and destruction in Gaza and Lebanon. The overall conflict has witnessed the recurrence of violence and armed confrontations since its origin. Israel with support from the United States and like-minded states resorted to unabated violence to suppress the genuine calls for the right of self-determination and independence of Palestinians. The Al-Aqsa flood launched by Al-Qasam brigades of Hamas on October 7, 2023, revived and galvanized the movement of Palestinian liberation but invited a ruthless response from powerful Israel that has repudiated the international humanitarian and human rights laws through indiscriminate and disproportionate use of force resulting in thousands of Palestinian killings. The fundamental question is whether the military solution that conflicting parties resort to would bring a lasting peace in Palestine? The research, therefore, tries to explore critical questions of what causes the recurrence of violence within the Israel-Palestine conflict? What efforts have been taken to resolve the conflict? Why have these efforts broken down and could not yield peace? While finding answers to these questions, we try to find the best possible way(s) to address the longstanding-unresolved issue of Israel-Palestine conflict by applying Edward Azar’s Protracted Social Conflict (PSC) model and Abraham Maslow’s model of hierarchy of needs. The paper is divided into four sections. First, a brief historical background of the conflict is given to assess the origins and identify the root causes of the conflict. Second, we analyse international efforts to resolve the conflict. The third section identifies why peace efforts broke down leading to the ultimate recurrence of violence (particularly, the contemporary Israel-Hamas war). Fourth, we apply Azar’s PSC and Maslow’s needs models to assess causes of the recurrence of violence and provide credible, compelling and critical recommendations for conflict resolution and bringing sustainable and lasting peace in Palestine. Concordance of Islamic Concepts of Allah and Malaa’ykaas and Hindu Concepts of Brahman and Devtas

    Get PDF
The article provides a comparative study of the Holy Quran and Hindu texts to highlight both their concordances and differences. Notable similarities include: the portrayal of the universe as initially unified before becoming separated; the omnipresence of Allah or Brahman in all existence; the concepts of rewards and punishments in the afterlife; the notion of a timeless beginning; and the view of the material world as a purposeful journey towards Allah/Brahman. The numerous angels in Islam can be compared to the 33 types of Devtas in Hinduism, with both traditions affirming that these celestial beings do not consume food or drink. Both traditions acknowledge the existence of malevolent entities that challenge divine authority and disrupt human life. Both traditions also attribute specific functions to certain angels or devtas. However, Hinduism describes the separation of cosmic entities Purusha and Viraj as an inherent, self-initiated process rather than the action of an external force. The Islamic concept tells of permanence of Jannat (Heaven) versus the Hindu concept telling of temporariness of Swarga (Heaven). However, if we consider the term “unless your Lord may will otherwise” in Al-Qur’an (11:106-108), then the common understanding becomes that the souls go to heaven (or hell) until their time is exhausted as decided by Allah. Additionally, unlike Islam, where Satan i.e. Iblees is a singular figure, Hinduism encompasses Rakshasas as a broader category of malevolent spirits

It recognized that true well-being encompasses all dimensions of human life emphasizing governance, justice, equality, and compassion as well as moral, spiritual, social wellbeing and political dimensions for all members of society. While its principles are universally relevant, this paper considers its applicability in Pakistan’s perspective

    No full text
The Thaqīf tribe and the city of Ṭāʾif hold significant importance in the political history of pre-Islamic and early Islamic Arabia. The Thaqīf tribe, known for its warrior culture, resided in Ṭāʾif, a prosperous city located near Makkah. Ṭāʾif was a key economic and strategic center due to its fertile lands and its control over important trade routes. Politically, the Thaqīf tribe was strong and maintained independence in pre-Islamic times. During the rise of Islam, the tribe resisted the Prophet Muḥammad’s (PBUH) message and took part in conflicts against the Muslims, including the Battle of Ḥunayn. Despite initial resistance, Ṭāʾif was eventually besieged by Muslim forces, though it remained defiant until 9 AH (630 CE) when the Thaqīf tribe finally embraced Islam. After accepting Islam, the Thaqīf tribe became integrated into the Islamic state and played a role in the expanding Islamic empire. The city of Ṭāʾif continued to grow in importance during the Caliphate era, both as a trading hub and as a strategic military post. The political history of the Thaqīf tribe and Ṭāʾif reflects the broader transitions in Arabia during the emergence of Islam, from independent tribal politics to integration within a unified Islamic polity
