Geoscience Literacy Profile of Junior High School Students
The purpose of this research is to find out the geoscience literacy profile of junior high school students in Surabaya. The method used in this research is quantitative method. The test is done online through google form. The problem used in the test instrument is an adaptation of the TIMSS (Trends in Mathematics and Science Study) question in the Earth Science sub-discussion. The question instrument contains 10 points of multiple choice questions, and 3 items of description questions that are the result of the development of indicator slices of TIMSS (Trends in Mathematics and Science Study) 2019 and basic competency indicators of curriculum 2013. The study subjects were 85 respondents who were grade VIII students of State and Private Junior High in Surabaya. The results showed that the geoscience literacy capability profile of junior high school students in Surabaya with an average score of 58.2% is included in the low criteria, there are two indicators that have low achievement criteria, namely identifying or describing changes in the earth's surface, and the impact of geological events; and describe the process of hydrological cycles and know the sun as a source of energy for the hydrology cycle, sufficient achievement criteria, contained in the domain of cognitive knowing and reasoning. A Teaching Material Based on Science, Environment, Technology, and Society to Improve Student’s Critical Thinking Skills: Synchronous and Asynchronous Learning During Covid-19 Pandemic
Student's critical thinking has not been maximally train in learning, learning activities are only memorizing demands of passing the assessment. Students are less understand, build, and criticize arguments about a problem, especially in science learning. This is the introduction for the development of teaching materials based on Science, Environment, Technology, and Society (SETS). This study aims to determine how the feasibility of science teaching materials based on SETS in ecosystem materials to improve the critical thinking skills of grade 5 students. This type of research is research and development (Research and Development) with a 4D model. This research was conducted online using Microsoft Teams which was carried out synchronously and asynchronously due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The data collection technique is the expert validation stage, the implementation of learning observation sheets, critical thinking tests (pretest and posttest), and student response questionnaires and then analyzed using quantitative and descriptive techniques. The results show that: (1) teaching materials were in the feasible category with an average of 3.4, (2) practical based on observations of the implementation of learning with an average of 93% and the categories are good, and 95% of the student activity was active, ( 3) effective based on the acquisition of N-gain on the critical thinking test is 0.77 (high category), and the student response questionnaire that is 97% very good category. This teaching material based on SETS is expected to improve students' critical thinking skills, in this study students can be categorized as having high critical thinking skills
Improving Senior High School Students’ Physics Problem-solving Skills Through Investigated Based Multiple Representation (IBMR) Learning Model
This research aims to improve senior high school students’ physics problem-solving skills through learning used IBMR learning model. This research was a pre-an experimental study with a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The Methods of data collection used validation and test. The materials used to teach were valid category by two experts and can be used to practice physics problem-solving skills. The average post-test score physics problem-solving ability was 73.24 with an N-gain of 0.59 was classified as moderate. The success of IBMR learning model-based devices in practicing problem-solving abilities can be seen in the increase in the average score in each indicator of problem-solving abilities. The indicator of understanding the problem had the highest post-test average score of 94.58 with an N-gain of 0.89 in the high category. The problem-solving indicator had the lowest posttest average score was 58.22 with N-gain 0.39 and mean that it was the moderate category. Based on the results study, it can be concluded that the learning used by IBMR learning model can practice the ability to solve physics problems on heat material and its displacement. Qualitative Research in Applied Linguistics: A Practical Introduction, edited by Juanita Heigham and Robert Croker
This review makes a point in favor of the assertion made for the book that it is a practical introduction to the qualitative research in applied linguistics. The book consists of four parts: an overview of qualitative research, qualitative research methods, qualitative data collection methods, ethical practice issues and the writing of research reports. After proving a rich introduction to the qualitative research, the book discusses qualitative research approaches using a reader-friendly and interactive structure: pre-reading and post-reading questions along with the list of further readings. Then the data collection tools have been thoroughly discussed. What makes this book more useful is the use of illustrative examples for each qualitative research approach and data collection tool. The last part discusses core issues of ethics and drafting a research report. From the perspective of a novice researcher, it has achieved the goal of educating readers about qualitative research methods and data collection tools, as it gradually tracks the reader and provides them with a linking concept for a better understanding. However, reference to one study for both ethnography and case study remains a confusing point. Besides, the review suggests addition of some images to make reading of the book more interesting, especially for visual learners. Besides, a diagram should be given at the end of research methods chapters to outline the steps taken by researchers to do their studies
Improving Students' Motivation and Learning Outcomes Using Edmodo Learning Media Assisted with Meeting Room Media on The Circulation System Materials
The development of technology in Indonesia in the field of education is no stranger to a teacher. For this reason, a teacher is required to master technology. One of the most widely used educational technologies today is online-based learning media. Through this research, it is able to increase the teacher's insight in sorting out the suiTable learning media for use in the learning process. This type of research is classroom action research. The purpose of this study was to determine the increase in motivation and learning outcomes of students using Edmodo learning media assisted by meeting room media on the circulation system material. Classroom Action Research in its implementation uses a cycle pattern, where each cycle requires three meetings and the level of research completion depends on the extent to which the level of achievement of learning success is adjusted to the assessment standards. Each cycle in this research consists of the stages of Planning, Action, Observation / Evaluation, and Reflection activities. The results showed that the use of Edmodo learning media assisted by meeting room media can increase the motivation and learning outcomes of students in the circulation system material
A Four-tier Test to Identify Students’ Conceptions in Inheritance Concepts
Identification of students' conceptions is an important step before developing suitable learning methods to improve students' understanding. One of the best way to identify students’ conception is the use of diagnostic test. Therefore, the development of diagnostic tests were important in the teaching and learning process to help the teacher determine the students’ conceptions, wheater they have scientific conceptions, lack of knowledge, or misconception. The aim of this research is to develop a valid and reliable four-tier diagnostic test to identify students’ conceptions in inheritance. The research method consists of three main stages: define content, obtaine information about students’ conception, and develop the four-tier test. The result from the research demonstrated that the four-tier test that was developed, was valid and reliable instrument in diagnosing students’ conception in inheritance concepts
Validity and Practically of Learning Resources Flipbook Identification of Basidiomycota Mushrooms for Senior High School Students
The aim of this research is to describe validity flipbook type e-book in terms of the feasibility content, language, and display; and describe the practicality of an e-book in terms of an implementation observation. The method used in this study is a modified research and development method and was carried out at the Postgraduate Science Education, the State University of Surabaya in February 2020 - August 2021. The data collection technique was carried out using the validation method and the implementation observation method. The assessment instrument uses a validation sheet and an implementation observation sheet. The validity of the flipbook type e-book is reviewed from the feasibility of the content, the feasibility of the language, and the feasibility of the display. The validity of the flipbook-type e-book was assessed by three validators which included two biology lecturers and one biology teacher. For practicality, use the implementation observation sheet in terms of the use of flipbooks during the learning process. The observation sheet contains statements that will be filled out by four observers. Data analysis was carried out quantitatively. The developed e-book was tested on 20 students of class X Senior High School students in August 2021. The validation results of the flipbook type e-book by three validators obtained an average score of 3.84 with a very valid category. Based on practicality in terms of implementation, flipbooks get an average percentage of 87.2%. Thus, the flipbook-type e-book on the identification of Basidiomycota fungi is declared valid and practical
Does Impact of Using an Online Learning on Salesmanship Course in The Era Covid 19 Pandemic?
This research aims to explore the application of learning salesmanship courses during the COVID-19 pandemic, where there are social policies and physical distance conducted by online lectures, while salesmanship courses will be effective if done with many direct practices. Approved implementation of planning, implementation, and evaluation of the implementation of online learning with the support of learning applications such as learning modules and videos. This research was conducted using descriptive qualitative, discussion, and collect data about responses and submissions of learning applications consisting of modules and video sales used during the online learning process. The technique of collecting data is done by collecting, observing, and questioning. Data were analyzed qualitatively using NVIVO software. The results showed that learning tools in the form of salesmanship modules and videos received very high responses, and were effective in fostering student interest in learning, the results of data analysis showed that with modules and videos made learning salesmanship easier, especially on the topic of effective selling techniques online at a pandemic period, very relevant to current needs
The Effectiveness of Cooperative Learning in the Class of Inferential Statistics
The challenge in teaching statistics encompasses student motivation, mathematical anxiety, and student understanding. It needs an approach of education that encourages curiosity and leads to the engagement and comprehension of students. Cooperative learning is one of the teaching approaches that can be defined as learning with small groups of friends and implementing what they have learned in a lecture to achieve the same objective. Employing cooperative learning in the class of inferential statistics and assessing the efficacy of this approach is the aim of this study. The efficiency of the approach is determined based on the student's perception, the lecture’s observation, and the student's performance. The results showed that students more prefer to learn in a group during the course. While, based on the lecture’s observation, letting students sit in a group engages students positively during their lessons. After the implementation of cooperative learning, the student performance also exhibited improvement. Hence, it is tolerable to conclude that cooperative learning is efficient in increasing student engagement and performance
The Rise of E-Learning in COVID-19 Pandemic in Private University: Challenges and Opportunities
The COVID-19 pandemic which is occurring all over the world indeed has many negative impacts in various aspects. On the other hand, the COVID-19 pandemic aroused the use of e-learning which has been seen as a complementary medium in the education process in Indonesia. This research aims to explore the challenges and opportunities felt by students in private university by implementing e-learning as an innovative learning method in the future. Through the mixed method approach, it can be concluded that e-learning can be accepted as an educational solution in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, but it still requires improvements in terms of comfort, infrastructure, and absorption of knowledge so that e-learning does not merely move classrooms into digital classrooms, but also provides a holistic experience that makes it easier for students to learn and gain knowledge. Research provide student perspectives in undergoing e-learning which is expected to be a recommendation for universities to provide a good e-learning experience. In addition, there is an evaluative step for the lecturer in optimally optimizing e-learning design
