Creating positive memory in staged experiences through sensory tools

    Get PDF
This research investigates the link between the degree of sensory stimulation and positive memory in staged experiences. First, a field study on how two museums used sensory tools in their experience design was conducted. The findings showed that senses played an important role in experience evaluation. However, the actual effect was often felt on a subconscious level, making it difficult for visitors to distinguish between the importance of different senses. Taking this into account, the second study was conducted with a holistic view of the senses. Data were collected through an online survey distributed to a consumer panel asking the participants to relate to a specific experience. The findings showed a strong relationship between the sensory dimension and positive memory, in part mediated by cognitive and affective dimensions. These findings and the chosen methodology add to the growing knowledge on sensory experience design. From a practical perspective, this study offers important implications for experience providers.publishedVersio

These days, the Industrial Internet of Healthcare Things (IIT) enabled applications have been growing progressively in practice. These applications are ubiquitous and run onto the different computing nodes for healthcare goals. The applications have these tasks such as online healthcare monitoring, live heartbeat streaming, and blood pressure monitoring and need a lot of resources for execution. In IIoHT, remote procedure call (RPC) mechanism-based applications have been widely designed with the network and computational delay constraints to run healthcare applications. However, there are many requirements of IIoHT applications such as security, network and computation, and failure efficient RPC with optimizing the quality of services of applications. In this study, the work devised the lightweight RPC mechanism for IIoHT applications and considered the hybrid constraints in the system. The study suggests the secure hybrid delay scheme (SHDS), which schedules all healthcare workloads under their deadlines. For the scheduling problem, the study formulated this problem based on linear integer programming, where all constraints are integer, as shown in the mathematical model. Simulation results show that the proposed SHDS scheme and lightweight RPC outperformed the hybrid for IIoHT applications and minimized 50% delays compared to existing RPC and their schemes.publishedVersio

Users Perceptions of Headphones and Earbuds in Norway and Brazil: An Empirical Study Based on a Kahoot Quiz

Abstract. Headphones and earbuds are seemingly more popular than ever with the wide availability of smartphones and music streaming services. Such personal audio systems are also essential for many blind and visually impaired computer users that relies on text-to-speech. Few published studies address the users’ perceptions of such personal audio output devices. However, past research shows that negative perceptions may lead to device abandonment. General-purpose equipment may therefore be more successful than special purpose assistive technologies for marginalized groups. We therefore set out to gain insight into how users generally perceive headphones and earbuds, and we wanted to base our study in two different cultural contexts. A questionnaire built on a Kahoot quiz was developed involving 12 questions related to headphones and earbuds. A total of 100 participants were recruited in Norway and Brazil. The results show that intuitiveness is the most valued feature of these devices and cost was not. Brazilians expressed skepticism regarding the use of headphones while walking and when travelling on public transport, while Norwegians expressed that headphones were safe to use in such situations. Our experiences showed that Kahoot is a promising platform for conducting such experiments, as it may appear more engaging than regular questionnaires. Moreover, they are relatively easy to set up and allow response times to be measuredacceptedVersio

Exploring Organisational ISMS Alignment with Structuration Theory: A Case Study in a Norwegian Public Sector Agency

    Get PDF
Information Security Management Systems (ISMS) provides organisations with guidance and strategies on how to implement information security into their organisations and achieve resiliency. It is largely recognised that adequate information security resilience is achieved through people, processes, and technology. Despite this recognition, however, several organisations still struggle to achieve proper alignment of information security across the organisation. For many organisations, there is a misalignment between their information security and their overarching organisational objectives. This is often represented by perceptions that information security is a technical problem and is removed from the activities and processes which support the daily organisational objectives. This misalignment can create situations where the ISMS of an organisation is not enacted properly. This research has set out with the purpose of elucidating how these misalignments occur and suggest possible opportunities for alignment. This sought is achieved through the use of Anthony Gidden’s structuration theory, which Wanda Orliwkoski has put into a theoretical framework which can be applied to empirical conditions. This framework has allowed this thesis to approach ISMS alignment in a novel and theoretical way, by identifying recursive structures which inform organisational activities and processes. This has been done at a Norwegian public sector agency. This led the research to identify structures within the organisational setting which pose obstacles to the necessary ISMS alignment. Simultaneously it identified structures which provide opportunities for the ISMS to align itself with existing activities and processes. This research, thus, provides one practical and one theoretical result. Firstly, it has diagnosed organisational reasons as to why the ISMS at the agency has not been integrated in a desired manner. Secondly, it has demonstrated the explanatory power of the theoretical framework, thus providing information security researchers a new tool to study and analyse ISMS alignment with.
