Simon Firkovič and his role in preserving the Karaim language
Lithuania is a unique place in the world where the Karaim language is still alive. Living in Lithuania for 625 years, Karaims have spoken their mother tongue at home and in their families, also used their language in religious service, and learned it at school. The Senior priest of Trakai community Simon Firkovič (1897–1982) played an important role in fostering and preserving his native Karaim. He was elected to that position in 1922 and served there for 60 years. The article looks into his activities in two strands: him working for the community in his religious and teaching duties as well as being a poet and writer, in a more individual vein following his vocation to cultivate, safeguard, facilitate, and nurture Karaim identity
The Abstract Book of the International Student Conference on Pediatrics 2024
The International Student Conference on Pediatrics is an annual collaborative effort between Vilnius University Faculty of Medicine Students\u27 Paediatrics Scientific Group and Rīga Stradiņš University Paediatrics Interest Group. This platform enables medical students from both universities to present their scientific work and findings in pediatric research. This year\u27s conference saw the inclusion of students from Ukraine, further enhancing international cooperation. The conference aims to foster collaboration and academic excellence while promoting enduring partnerships in the field of pediatrics. The Abstract Book contains students’ abstract work, providing an overview of the event
Homage to the last speakers of Halich Karaim
The article pays homage to the last fluent speakers of Halich Karaim. Two of them lived in the traditional settlement, the Karaim Street in Halich. A further speaker moved to Trakai and stayed there for the rest of her life with her sister. Thanks to favorable circumstances all of them could communicate in their daily life in Halich Karaim and maintain their full competence in their community language. Common to them all was their concern about the future of the language and their strong determination to transmit their linguistic competence to others, and especially to the younger Karaim generation
Between turkic and slavic. Materials for the investigation of slavic loanwords in the earliest west Karaim sources
This paper offers an overview of the oldest West Karaim written sources with a special focus on the Slavic lexical elements they contain. The main goal of the article is to present the phonetic adaptation processes these loanwords underwent and to answer the question from which Slavic languages they were borrowed. The Slavic linguistic material presented in this article was collected from manuscripts created in the first 100 years of the written history of West Karaim, i.e. in the period between 1671 and 1772. The year 1772, i.e. the year in which the First Partition of Poland took place, has been chosen as the closing time limit mainly because the second half of the 18th century was the time when Slavic–West Karaim bilingualism became a widespread phenomenon which, in turn, resulted in markedly different adaptation processes than in the early decades of these contacts
Karaim language studies – a historical overview
The aim of this paper is to put forth a short overview of the study in the Karaim language. Firstly, the position and importance of Karaim is stressed. Secondly, trends in research are demonstrated. Thirdly, general descriptions, grammars, and dictionaries are presented. The article highlights the most significant studies in the basic domains of Karaim linguistics such as phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicology, and semantics. At the same time, the article formulates several postulates for tasks to be done. A selected bibliography of most relevant studies has also been included
15th Conference on Data Analysis Methods for Software Systems. November 28–30, 2024
DAMSS-2024 is the 15th International Conference on Data Analysis Methods for Software Systems. It is held in Druskininkai, Lithuania, at the same venue and time every year. The conference successfully achieves its primary goal of lively scientific communication among participants. The conference’s history dates back to 2009 when 16 papers were presented. It began as a workshop related to one international project and has evolved into a well-known conference. The initiator of the workshop was the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics which later became the Institute of Data Science and Digital Technologies at Vilnius University. The Lithuanian Academy of Sciences and the Lithuanian Computer Society are partners. The long-standing experience of such partnerships guarantees a high quality of organization and academic relevance

Towards Service Quality in Logistics in a Multi-Crisis Environment: The Combination of Lean and Digitalisation
Organisations operating in an environment of uncertainty are looking at 15-18 months to run operations at the same level as in the pre-crisis period. Therefore, companies have to focus on updating existing quality approaches, developing new models, and finding best practices. This paper aims to investigate the activities of a logistics company operating in Lithuania, which is implementing the lean philosophy through improving quality using information technology, and to analyse its actions in improving quality during the crisis. In order to achieve the set goal, the non-conformance management data of the parcel delivery company from 2016 to 2022 was analysed. During the research, it was found that the company had faced several crises, the most prominent of which was the increased demand for logistics services during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results show that new, emerging quality management challenges are managed by applying knowledge of lean management practices within two years
Employer Image and Employer Brand: Interaction of Both Terms
Currently, when the demand for employees is higher than supply, there is a question of possible solutions. One of the opportunities for companies is to ensure that they will be chosen when their potential employees consider making career changes. This is where the terms “employer image” and “employer brand” come into the picture – terms often used interchangeably in the scientific and professional fields. The aim of the article is to eliminate the confusion in the use of employer brand and employer image as terms and to show their theoretical position among other interconnected terms. It is presented through definitions and a model proposed by the author. In addition, the author points to the consideration of ethics when applying the employer brand
