The Old Believers who live in the villages along the Issa River near the town of Opočka in the Pskov region belong to the radical branch of Orthodox Russian dissidents’, the so-called Fedoseyevian denomination. Unlike the majority of the Feodosiy’s followers, who over the 19–20 cc. gradually accepted the ideas of the non-priestist Pomorians, who areclosely related to them, the Old Believers near Opočka continue the “celibatarian” ideology. There is almost nothing known about the everyday life of these rural traditional Fedoseyevians. The tiny community we investigated consists of two parishes, and is currently on the brink of extinction. The main feature of the confessional structure of this community is the subdivision of its members into three groups, respectively, the rabskije, the newlyweds, navažonyje and the laypeople (or temporals mirskije). The status of each group within the community and the rules of conduct for its members are described on the basis of accounts recorded during the expedition.

The author argues that the comparison of the Christian God to the depths of the sea, used by Constantine the Philosopher in his disputation with the Arabs (as described in chapter 6 of his Vita), goes back to the pseudo-Chrysostomian festal sermon for Holy Cross Day (14 September), and not to the homilies by Gregory of Nazianzus, as have been proposed by V. Vavřínek

This article focuses on the role of language in the 19th-century development of national identities among the Croats and Serbs in Croatia, Dalmatia, Slavonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The issues of national self-determination, the ideas and goals of nationhood, and the methods and means for attainment of such goals were of considerable importance for 19th-century Croatian and Serbian intellectuals and politicians. From the early 19th century on, language and orthography were the most significant features of ethnic distinction between the Croats and Serbs.

This article discusses word-formation issues concerning adverbs in two Slavonic languages. As a Slovenian theory of synchronic formation has not fully developed because of problems in interpreting constructions such as slej ko prej, kratko malo, and etymologically prepositional constructions, the paper proposes using a word-formation theory developed for Russian as a theoretical basis of comparing Russian and Slovenian adverbs.Based on material from the Russian Grammar and the Dictionary of Slovenian Literary Language, the article compares a) relationships between productive and derivative stems, and b) word-formation for adjectival adverbs. The paper also discusses the considerable range of formal means for expressing various morphological meanings in Russian compared with the situation in Slovenian
