Get PDFThe article provides an overview of the history of the Department of Slavic Philology, the foundation of which as part of the Philology Faculty at Vilnius University was laid by professor V. N. Čekmonas in spring 1987. The article reviews the development of academic and scientific programs throughout the twentyyear history of the department, the training of professionals in various Slavic languages and cultures, as well as the growth of scientific manpower. Since its inception, the Department has prepared professionals in West and South-Slavic languages, developed unique educational studies, created the region’s largest library of scientific and educational literature, and trained interpreters in Czech, Bulgarian, Serbian, Croatian, and Slovenian. Innovative activities have lead to the introduction of Hungarian and Turkish languages at the department, so the teaching of these languages has become one more activity of the department. Special attention is paid to scholarly research, fostering of international contacts, and practical activities of the departamental staff and graduates

Get PDFProfessor Chekmonas has demonstrated how an examination of one person reveals the essential features of their language as well as the language of the village in which they live. Also, that casts light on the linguistic history of the village and its environs. In this article, the author employs the same technique, yet on a micro scale. The western part of the Braslau region used to be differentiated in terms of its linguistic nature: the region was populated by Lithuanians, Belarusians and Poles. Thus the Belarusian dialects are based on the Lithuanian substratum, while the Polish dialects are based on Lithuanian and Belorussian. An informant from the Polish nobility tells us about the Lithuanian villages, the Lithuanian language as spoken by the older generations of Poles, and the current situation of the Polish language. His language contains many Belorussian peculiarities, some common Lithuanian-Belarusian features, and probably one purely Lithuanian feature.There is a need for similar studies devoted to the language of other idiolects as well as to the language of the few villages the inhabitants of which still speak Polish

Get PDFThe choice of sights described or mentioned in Vilnius guidebooks varies greatly. The article examines seventeen Lithuanian, Russian and Polish guidebooks published between 1858 and 1915, in the interwar era in 1937 and during the Soviet period. The analysis shows that the selection of objects depended heavily on the ideological, national and political interpretation of the city’s history. The criteria, which are not expressed explicitly, bespeak significance of a social function, a historical-architectural and aesthetic value, and important events and activities of outstanding figures in social, political and cultural history. The ideological and national-cultural orientations determine differences the evaluations of events and personalities, which reveals the criteria for object selection and their descriptions
