Квазиоппозиции в текстах и грамматиках XVI–XVIII вв. как маркеры устройства славянской категории одушевленности
This article examines the paradigmatic expression of animacy in the XVI–XVIIIth century Russian, Polish, Slovak and Czech languages. In Russian, animate nouns are marked only by neutralization of the Acc. and the Gen. forms, whereas in Czech, the differentiation of animate and inanimate nouns is marked primarily by different case endings for a single grammatical case. Polish and Slovak use both methods. Some texts and grammars from the early development stages of the modern Slavic literary languages reflect the creation of certain artificial oppositions. These quasioppositions are present in Dmitry Gerasimov’s and Maximus the Greek’s translations of the Church Slavonic Donatus, in the first Polish grammar by Pierre Statorius (1568), in the Czech grammars by Beneš Optat, Petr Gzel and Václav Philomathes (1531), Jan Blahoslav (1571) and Matouš Benešovský (1577), as well as in the Slovak Camaldolese Bible (1756-59).
Language constitutes an important part of identity; therefore, a definite relationship can be established between the stages of development of the national language and forms of identity. The formation and development of the Slovenian national language, starting in the late seventeenth century, during the period of National Awakening, and of Slovenian national identity can be divided into six stages or periods, all of which saw the social functions of the Slovenian language change. In the 1990’s, emphasis on Slovenian national identity reached its peak, at the same time that the effects of globalization became noticeable in Slovenia, increasing the attention of the Slovenians to their regional and local particularities and the diversity of their local dialects. The article focuses on the different forms of national, local and regional identities that have emerged during this period in Slovenia.
The article, on the perceptions of the Russian language by native Russian-speaking citizens of Lithuania, is based on in-depth interviews conducted as part of the sociolinguistic projects “Language Use and Ethnic Identity in Lithuanian Cities” (2007–2009) and “A Sociolinguistic Map of Lithuania” (2010–2012). The perceptions of the Russian language by the interviewees in Lithuania are compared with analogous perceptions by native speakers in Russia that are discussed in the works of Russian researchers. The article contrasts the characteristics of the Russian language perceived by both categories of native speakers against those perceived by native Russian-speaking citizens in Lithuania alone. The attitudes towards the Russian language in Lithuania reflect the linguistic situation in the country and the “conscious” bilingualism of the native Russian-speaking interviewees. Although the respondents both in Russia and Lithuania claim that they value the aesthetic qualities of their mother tongue, in Lithuania the functional aspect of the Russian language is more emphasised. That is, for the Russian-speaking citizens of Lithuania the Russian language is significant and intimate in that it provides psychological comfort and the opportunity for more adequate verbal self-expression.
The article provides dialectological recordings of Polish (the so-called polszczyznа kresowа) from the Trakai region, specifically Bražuolė and its surroundings, made during the expeditions in the 1990’s organized by the Department of Slavic Philology at Vilnius University. The Polish recordings are from an areal characterized sociolinguistically by the interface of four languages: the Polish dialect, Belarusian (po-prostu), Russian, and Lithuanian. These recordings reflect crucial and previously unidentified features of the sociolinguistic environment, as well as constitute historical evidence of language contact in Bražuolė and its surroundings. The data presented in the article can be used for further work on the history of language contacts in Lithuania.
The article examines the history of the following words found in the MXVIIth-cen. Muscovite diplomatic correspondence: verne ‘devoted (to), faithfully’, vol(’)no ‘one may, one is allowed’, gruda ‘frozen clod on the road’, dokonati ‘realize, carry out; fulfill, put into practice’, zaživati ‘use, employ’, zamykati ‘complete, conclude (about speech, text)’, zaperetisja ‘deny, refuse to admit; keep one’s mouth shut’. The author shows that these words, in the meanings provided here, are cross-Slavic calques in the Russian written language of the XVIIth.The author argues that these specific meanings of verne, gruda, dokonati, zamykati, and zaperetisja are most likely calques from Polish, and vol(’)no, zaživati in the examined sense are probably semantic calques from the written language of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
Nieznane listy Władysława Syrokomli
The article is devoted to the nine as-yet-unpublished letters by Władisław Syrokomla (Ludwik Kondratowicz, 1823–1862), kept at the Lithuanian State Historical Archive. Although some of the letters are undated, it can be assumed that they were written c. 1850–60. During that period Syrokomla lived at the Bareikiškės estate, 16 kilometers from Vilnius, and later moved to Vilnius, where he became well-known as a poet. Although this was one of his most-productive periods, both personally and professionally, he was unable to shield his large family from financial difficulties. The letters analyzed here show that despite having many debts, he attempted to help both his family members and acquaintances. The letters were addressed to four individuals: Syrokomla’s neighbor Władysław Fiorentin (4 letters), Ludwik Wrublewski (1), Rudolf Piesanka (3) and a certain Pavel (probably Kukolnik) (1). The letters to Wrublewski and Piesanka are business-related, the others are personal.
The article deals with the neologisms in the sermons of Gavrilo Stefanović Venclović, a Serbian writer of the XVIIIth century, who was among the first to use Serbian vernacular as a standard language for the purpose of writing sermons. After the Vuk type of written language had won, lexical gaps were filled mainly words and expressions already present in the vernacular. This method provided a very limited stylistic and lexical inventory for the writers. Venclović’s stylistic neologisms, possessing such qualities as picturesqueness and semantic transparency, served to draw attention of the audience to the text of the sermon. Rooted in the biblical tradition, they represent a ‘bridge’ between the Old Church Slavonic lexical legacy and the Serbian vernacular, as well as demonstrate the possibility for the creation of a standard language based on vernacular, without divorcement from the tradition of Cyril and Methodius. For a more detailed analysis of the neologisms in the language of Venclović’s sermons the author has chosen the category of verbal nouns with the suffix -lac, which were further categorized into complex and simple nouns, according to the derivation feature.
The author argues that the East Slavic liturgical service for the translation of the relics of St. Nicholas of Myra (9 May), which contains a Slavonic acrostic, is merely an adaptation of the Slavonic version of the Byzantine liturgical service for the translation of the relics of St. Bartholomew the Apostle (24 August), presumably composed by Joseph the Hymnographer. In the canon, no more than 6 troparia out of the total number of 28 are quite original compositions and do not depend on the above Byzantine model. Since the East Slavic service, like its Byzantine model, contains the minimum of stichera, it can be dated to the initial stage in the development of the Old East Slavic hymnography.
There are four XV–XVIIth century East Slavic manuscripts written in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL) that are indirect copies of the XIth century Old Bulgarian Codex Suprasliensis. Recently some scholars have proposed adding to the list another three XV–XVIth century East Slavic Menaion readers (two of which were written outside the GDL). The author demonstrates that these three manuscripts do not stem from the Codex Suprasliensis, but represent an alternative edition of the Menaion reader which contains a number of texts in a quite different textual version. The article presents a list of the distinguishing features which help mutually separate the two structurally similar versions of the Old Church Slavonic Menaion reader for March.
