Compounding in Danish
Full text linkCompounding is a major word formation process in Danish. Approaches currently important for examining Danish compounds are outlined, mostly based on two-constituent N+N compounds. We argue that compounding has both specific and universal features in different languages. Different types of compounds in Danish are discussed with focus on elliptical compounds, without direct semantic relations between the components. This comprehensive approach has proved useful as compounds in Danish differ considerably in semantic relations between the components. The experiment shows that for some groups of “popular” words, analogy plays a great role in the creation and interpretation of novel compounds
Are the Scandinavian Gods of Indo-European Heritage?
Full text linkThe origin of Germanic deities poses the question familiar from the study of phonemes, grammatical forms, and syntactic constructions: Indo-European heritage or local descent? Since from medieval Germania only Scandinavian mythology has come down to us, discussion centers around Othin, Thor, Týr, Baldr, etc. None of them has ascertainable roots in Indo-European, even when etymology points in that direction. Nor has George Dumézil succeeded in showing that the Indo-European and the Scandinavian pantheon, with their alleged tripartite division, are a good match, but from the nature of the case the question remains open

Jolly and Less Jolly Challenges in Working on the Norwegian-Lithuanian Dictionary
Full text linkThe Norwegian-Lithuanian Dictionary is a joint project of lexicographers from the universities of Vilnius and Oslo. The dictionary consists of approximately 48,000 entries. It is initially intended as a paper dictionary, but as it is compiled in XML, an electronic version is also planned for the future. The dictionary is bidirectional: that is, it is intended for native speakers of both Norwegian and Lithuanian, and it provides information on both the source language (Norwegian) and the target language (Lithuanian).The aim of the article is to give a presentation of the project, point out innovative aspects of the project, and analyse the jolly (expected) and less jolly (unexpected) challenges we faced in the two main stages of compiling the dictionary. In the first stage we adapted a base from another bilingual dictionary (the Large Norwegian-Russian Dictionary), reusing its lemma list and information on the source language, Norwegian. In the second stage we created a conception and a system for information on the target language, Lithuanian, and (perhaps for the first time in Lithuanian bilingual lexicography) included several types of information for non-native users of Lithuanian
The Language of Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairy Tales – Compared with Earlier Tales
Full text linkIt is my aim in this article to outline some of the main characteristics of Hans Christian Andersen’s language as used in the fairy tales. I shall concentrate on the earliest tales because this will allow me to focus on the radical linguistic departure from previous fairy tales that Andersen’s early work in this genre represents. Even so, comparisons apply not only to other writers; one of the most illuminating comparisons is with Andersen’s first attempt at fairy-tale writing, published in 1830
“Laissez-faire under a bell jar” Marquis Childs and the Sweden-fad of the Roosevelt Era
Full text linkFor decades “Swedology” was a rich and polemically charged genre. “Swedophiles” and “Swedoclasts” were quite as eager to deploy images of Sweden as weapons in foreign contexts as they were interested in the country as such. A telling example is the genre’s early classic, Marquis W. Childs’s Sweden: The Middle Way from 1936. With the backdrop of Dwight Eisenhower’s attempt to get back at Childs by branding Sweden as an extreme society in 1960, this essay aims to see Childs’s book as an argument in its original context during the New Deal. Rather than initiating the 1930s’ American wave of Swedophilia, Childs phrased his argument as an implicit polemic against its apparent exaggerations. Sweden was not a Utopia; the point in studying its example was on the contrary the pragmatism shown in the Swedes’ attempts to solve everyday problems in a reasonable and genuinely democratic way, negotiating and compromising. As a text implicitly supporting the Roosevelt agenda, Childs’s book was far from encouraging federal dirigisme, expert rule and central planning (“social engineering”): on the contrary the message to other New Dealers was to shun such things in favor of grass-roots activities and initiatives. The predominant theme – the consumers’ cooperation movement’s central role in counteracting monopolies, thus creating economic efficiency and turning Sweden into the world’s only truly working laissez-faire economy – harmonized with Childs’s commitment to projects like the federal rural electrification program, which in a “Swedish” manner was founded on co-ops and a vision of popular self-determination

The publication is the third, revised and expanded, edition of the Danish-Lithuanian dictionary published in 1994. It contains essential information about more than 7000 Danish words, including some Danish place names and common abbreviations. The dictionary also provides a description of the Danish phonetics compared to a few other languages and includes a concise introduction to the Danish grammar as well as a list of irregular verbs. The dictionary is also supplemented by an appendix containing several semantic fields where the Lithuanian words are presented in an alphabetical order alongside their equivalents in Danish.

It discusses the key aspects of Icelandic grammar: the word classes, their grammatical categories and usage, the declination and conjugation paradigms, the main features of Icelandic syntax, and word composition. Grammatical phenomena are illustrated with examples that are supplied with Lithuanian translations. The book also contains a summary of Icelandic pronunciation and other supplements.
Ši Islandų kalbos gramatika yra praktinė gramatika, skirta besimokantiems islandų kalbos. Knygoje aptariami svarbiausieji islandų gramatikos aspektai: kalbos dalys, joms būdingos gramatinės kategorijos, linksniavimo ir asmenavimo paradigmos, šių kalbos dalių vartojimas, pagrindiniai islandų sintaksės bruožai, žodžių daryba. No full textThis is a second, revised and annotated edition of the translation of Egil’s Saga into Lithuanian. It is supplied with introductory essays by Svetlana Steponavičienė and Ugnius Mikučionis, the translator’s commentary to the text, the index of proper names and maps. The verses in the saga have been translated by Leonas Petravičius, except for the skaldic poem “Sonatorrek”, which has been translated by Rasa Ruseckienė.

Full text linkSwedish-Lithuanian Dictionary (Švedų – lietuvių kalbų žodynėlis) is primarily intended for Lithuanian speakers who learn Swedish. The dictionary covers about 6,500 headwords, which form the basic vocabulary of the Swedish language. It gives the basic meanings of the Swedish words, complete forms of inflection and some stylistic details about the headwords. The dictionary includes the following appendices: pronunciation instructions, an overview of Swedish grammar and lists of the most common irregular verbs, names of countries and their inhabitants, as well as the most common Swedish abbreviations.
