"What is Human, Only what is Human ... " The Problem of Suffering in Leonid Leonov\u27s Novel "The Pyramid"
No full textThe article considers the hitherto unresearched problem of suffering in Leonid Leonov\u27s last novel, "The Pyramid". Numerous linguistic (lexical, phraseological and syntactic) markers of this problem have been found in Leonov\u27s novel: synonym of the noun "suffering", intertextual elements referring to the Bible and antique mythology, proverbs, aphorism, which belong to the semantic field of the base word "suffering". The article also presents the point of view of the characters in relation to the causes of suffering and its role in human life; besides, the attitude to spiritual torment is discussed. Based on the characters\u27 statements and the logic of events, three main causes of suffering are distinguished: the eternal struggle between God and Satan to win man, an attempt to realise the idea of earthly paradise without Christ, and love for Russia. Among the characters\u27 attitudes to suffering, first of all, submissiveness is distinguished, which leads to the reconciliation with cruel reality and to the justification of both God (theodicy of the priest Matvey Loskutov) and the man (anthropodicy of Stalin and his ardent supporter Vadim Loskutov). The characters seek the sources of the submission to Stalinist terror in the Gospel, which has determined some features of the Russian character (Matvey), either in the Gospel or in the desire to realise the immemorial dream of the "golden age", which is encoded in human awareness (Vadim)
The Rhetorical Trend in Studying Political Metaphor
No full textThis article deals with the specificity of the theory and practice of the rhetorical trend in studying political metaphor. Most modern scholars carry out research into political metaphor, citing George Lakoff\u27s seminal works on the conceptual metaphor theory. Although Lakoff\u27s contribution to linguistics is beyond doubt, rhetoric and discourse analysis are also considered sources of the modern theory of political metaphor. The rhetorical trend in studying political metaphor in American scientific discourse anteceded the cognitive approach to the concerned phenomenon. One of the earliest investigators of this area was Michael Osborn, whose works on archetypal metaphors were considered the basis for the rhetorical approach to metaphor in political linguistics. Osborn researched politicians\u27 rhetoric and revealed archetypal metaphors as invariable components transcending culture, time, and geography in political communication. Later, linguists tended to focus on revealing archetypal metaphors in political communication; however, the cultural specificity of political metaphors was also under consideration. Some ideas advanced by researchers within the rhetorical trend anticipated Lakoff and Johnson\u27s theses to a certain extent. It is indicative that similar ideas were suggested in Russian linguistics within the trend of stylistics. The rhetorical approach to political metaphor influenced the theory of conceptual metaphor and was considered to be an alternative to it. Yet it is argued that modern scholars of the rhetorical trend are inclined to adopt the heuristics of the cognitive theory of metaphor. No full textThis article presents two novels: "At the Edge of the Forests" (1894) and "Overseas Devil" (1902) written by Wacław Sieroszewski. The writer was regarded as the most interesting representative of exotic literature during the Young Poland period. The issue which the author of the article has concentrated her attention on is not connected with representation of specificity of exoticness manifested in Sieroszewski\u27s work. However, the main problem concerns dilemmas connected with a sense of European identity of Polish characters in Sieroszewski\u27s prose. The texts from both novels are discussed as a literary testimony of Polish consciousness that is related with the Northern East Siberia and the Far East at the turn of the centuries. The phenomenon of the merge of the two perspectives has appeared in the novels, i.e. a Polish exile and a European explorer. Biographical and historical-political context of both novels has been taken into consideration. The author discusses the identity components of Polish characters which became evident at the moment of confrontation of the Asian culture and civilization; which way Sieroszewski judged them; why Sieroszewski\u27s characters are not always identified with the European tradition.Straipsnyje aptariami du Waclawo Sieroszewskio romanai "Pamiškėse" (1894) ir "Užjūrio velniai" (1902). Jaunosios Lenkijos laikais šis rašytojas buvo laikomas vienu įdomiausiu vadinamosios egzotinės literatūros atstovu. Tačiau straipsnio autorę domina ne tiek egzotizmo šiame kūrinyje specifika, kiek šių kūrinių herojų europinės tapatybės pajautos problematika. Romanų tekstas traktuojamas kaip literatūrinis liudijimas apie lenko savimonę, kai amžių sandūroje jam atsivėrė ir šiaurės rytų Sibiro, ir Tolimųjų Rytų erdvės. Romanuose kryžiuojasi dvi perspektyvos: lenkų tremtinio ir europiečio atradėjo. Straipsnyje labiausiai domimasį kokie lenkų herojų tapatybės elementai ryškiausiai atsiskleidė susidūrus su Azijos kultūra bei civilizacija, kaip juos vertino Sieroszewskis, ir kodėl jo herojai ne visada noriai tapatindavo save su europine tradicija

No full textThe aim of this article is to present and discuss the results of a correlational study, the subject matter of which is the relationship between the cognitive style of field dependence/field independence and reading comprehension. The paper attempts to stress the role of individual learner differences in the process of second language acquisition. Therefore, the emphasis is placed on applying psychological issues to the educational context. The reader is presented with empirical research results and an in-depth analysis of these findings, followed by implications for the EFL classroom.Šiame straipsnyje pateikiama koreliacinių tyrimų atliktų 2003 m rugsėjo mėnesį trijose Kielcų miesto bendrojo lavinimo vidurinėse mokyklose rezultatai. Moksliniuose tyrimuose dalyvavo 216 moksleivių. Atliktų tyrimų esmė - ištirti priklausomumo / nepriklausomumo ryšį tarp duomenų lauko (vieno iš kognityvinio stiliaus) ir sąmoningo skaitymo. Atliekant tyrimus buvo naudojami tokie būdai: nepriklausomo kintamumo būdas - testo rezultatai apibrėžiantys tiriamų vienetų (testas GEFT) priklausomumą / nepriklausomumą nuo duomenų lauko; priklausomo kintamumo būdas - rezultatai apibrėžiantys sąmoningo anglų kalbos skaitymo lygį (testas RC), modeliuojamo kintamumo būdas - apibrėžiantis priklausomumą nuo amžiaus ir lyties.Statistinės analizės pagrindu straipsnyje įrodomas stiprus ryšys tarp tiriamo kognityvinio stiliaus ir sąmoningo skaitymo. Nustatoma, kad šio ryšio stiprumas kinta priklausomai nuo amžiaus ir lyties. Tyrimų rezultatai patvirtina individualaus užsienio kalbų mokymo proceso būtinumą ir gali turėti įtakos šio proceso formavimui

Hagiotoponyms: A Special Case of Reflection of Mental Capacity in Geographical Names
No full textThis article is dedicated to the analysis of the sacred toponyrnics as a means of expression of religious world-view. The definitions of mentality and mental capacity remain speculative. However, one important component is absent in all available interpretations. That is the religious component. In the article, the correlation of hagiotoponyms and sacred toponyms is examined, and illustrated by examples from literature and spoken language. Specifications of defining the terms hagionym. hagiotoponym. hagioanthroponym are provided; for the first time the definition of festonym as a term is given, which describes celebrations in the structure of onomastics. The author comes to the conclusion that the sacred toponyrnics are made by hagiotoponyms going down to theonyms and hagioanthroponyms in their origin, as well as precedent toponyms containing a religious semantic part in their structure. All toponyms going under the category of sacred toponymics have a lexical background, i. e. knowledge which is necessary for adequate understanding of religious texts

This influence makes the generation gap more and more distinct as young people have created their own "secret code" that allows them to communicate within their closed society. The article presents vocabulary that is typical of hip-hop fans and the lnternet users in Poland.Straipsnyje aptariamas interneto ir hip-hopo slengo poveikis lenkų jaunimo šnekamajai kalbai.
