Wizja dziejów Polski w twórczości Celiny Bobińskiej na łamach „Nowych Dróg” – wybrane przykłady
[full article in Polish; abstract in English]
The article is an attempt to analyse the achievements of Celina Bobińska in the pages of Nowe Drogi, one of the leading magazines of leftist intelligentsia. Bobińska, as a historian, interpreted the main moments of Polish history from the turn of the 18th and 19th century, looking at them through the prism of historical materialism. The analysis will focus on selected articles by Bobińska from the turn of the forties and fifties. The research questions that will be posed are characteristic of historiography historiographer – what was the interpretation of these events and why and what other than theoretical and philosophical assumptions laid at the basis of such a vision of Polish history. Post-war years were a special moment in the history of the Polish intelligentsia, when this layer faced dilemmas of involvement on the side of building a new social order in its material, but also institutional and consciousness aspect. The construction of the latter was especially a task for the intelligentsia, which journalism used to do. Bobińska was one of the leading representatives openly on the side of Marxism (as a certain theory, but also a worldview).[straipsnis lenkų kalba; santrauka anglų kalba]
[full article and abstract in Lithuanian; abstract in English]
Autonomy of art understood as the independence of the art creation, dissemination and funding organizations from political institutions is one of the most important principles of cultural politics in democratic countries. The idea of artistic autonomy is the basis of the ‘arm’s length’ cultural policy model that works in the United Kingdom and Scandinavian states and which had been ecommended by European Council experts to Lithuania and other Eastern European countries while reforming their cultural policy after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Lithuania finished the transition to the model in 2012-2013 when the Lithuanian Film Centre and the Council for Culture had been established. However, the reaction of Lithuanian political authorities to some of the recent cultural events in Lithuania show that the autonomy of art as an idea and norm of cultural policy has not been working in Lithuania. The aim of this article is to describe the idea of the autonomy of art in cultural policy and to analyse several actual issues of Lithuanian cultural politics in the aspect of the relationship between the autonomy of art and democracy. The article is based on the analysis of scientific literature, press articles, and political documents.

Professional Translator’s Ethics and Gender Issue
This article focuses on the ethical aspects of translation and the question of translators’ responsibility, which nowadays are major issues in Ukraine. The paper demonstrates and reviews numerous cases of copyright infringement. As our research has shown, the texts are sometimes translated into Ukrainian not from their source language, but from Russian translations, which leads to double manipulations with the text. To verify this claim, French women’s belles-lettres texts and their Ukrainian and Russian translations have been analysed and compared. The post-Soviet period of Ukraine’s development has showcased not only the translation-related issues, but also the moral and ethical attitude of translators and publishing houses towards translation as the sphere of copyright. This analysis of Ukrainian translations raises concerns that some book titles, and sometimes the entire belles-lettres works of French women’s prose, have been “copied” from Russian translations. The most significant, in this respect, is the Ukrainian translation of George Sand’s novel “Consuelo”, translated by Viktor Boyko and published in 2011 by the Kharkiv publishing house “Folio”
The Translation of D. H. Lawrence’s Metaphors: the French Censored Passages in “The Rainbow” as a Case in Point
[full article and abstract in English]
The aim of this study is to explore D. H. Lawrence’s style through the prism of his use of metaphor. As a particularly enlightening method, I shall compare some of the censored passages in “The Rainbow” (1915) against their French translations (1939, 2002). Focusing my attention on their stylistic particularities, I will examine the manner in which they were translated into French. The central argument of my paper is that Lawrence’s metaphors related to the body are a relevant tool highlighting the author’s vision of human relationships, within the context of prevalent views in the beginning of the 20th century. The British authorities banned “The Rainbow” since its first publication and accused Lawrence of pornography. Therefore, it is important to glance back in order to understand the reason behind the censorship and see that the translations of Lawrence’s oeuvre were decisive in spreading his ideas beyond the frontiers of his country of origin. My analysis mainly draws on a descriptive approach but it is at the crossroads of several paradigms, namely the interpretative approach in Translation Studies and the cognitive approach to the study of metaphors.[straipsnis ir santrauka anglų kalba
Shakespeare Terminology with Special Reference to Shakespeare Arden Dictionaries
The paper is devoted to the description of a special group of reference works in English author lexicography – terminological (or LSP) dictionaries of different subject areas explored in Shakespeare’s works: ethics, religion, military and naval activities, medicine, music, politics and society, philosophy, theatre, etc. As stated by scholars, Shakespeare is considered to be an expert in nineteen subject fields whose terms are used in their direct and figurative meaning in the Bard’s creative works. Among more than one hundred types of Shakespeare’s linguistic and encyclopaedic reference works, his terminological dictionaries play a significant role, registering and describing special groups of terms from the author’s plays. Shakespeare LSP reference books are combined today into Arden Shakespeare Dictionaries. The article discovers specific features of the architecture of Shakespeare LSP dictionaries: mega-, macro- and microstructure, using the recently published dictionary “Shakespeare’s Plants and Gardens” (2016). Detailed analysis of the unique Shakespearean use of plant and garden names contribute to better understanding of their symbolism and aesthetic value in Shakespeare’s plays
From Verbal to Audiovisual Medium: The Case of the Cinematic Adaptation of R. L. Stevenson’s Novel “The Wrong Box”. Part I
The paper attempts at the analysis of the narrational shifts between verbal and audiovisual mediums on the basis of R. L. Stevenson’s novel The Wrong Box (1989) and its cinematic adaptation under the same title by Bryan Forbes (1966). The authors approach adaptation as a complex phenomenon that experiences the creative tension between preserving fidelity to the source literary text and striving for filmic originality. Similarly to novels, movies represent an act and art of narration but they use different narrative strategies. In film narratives, deep focus, the length and scale of the shots, editing, montage, lighting, sound design, music, human voice etc. accompany the verbal medium. Modelled after literature, movies demonstrate the specific construal narrative components that are combined into coherent cinematic sequences. When transfering R. L. Stevenson’s novel from fictional medium into cinematic medium, Forbes organises the relations of the narrative elements on an intertextual level thus fostering new expressive means. Such practice allows to project the cinematic narrator as a complex construct also given the possibility of being perceived as a speaking persona through an inventive use of intertitles. In fact, the adaptor is caught up in the farcical narrational game, provoking the viewer to actively participate in it.
Meilės emocijų raiška audiovizualinėje plotmėje
Audiovisual work is significant in its narrative and created images. Conveyance, recognition and experiences of characters’ emotions are not disregarded. By using the most elaborated audio and visual means, filmmakers try not only to involve the viewers in the film plot but also encourage them to discover characters’ emotions and feelings, go through their experiences and perceive their emotional transformation. This article aims at revealing the conceptualisation of transformation of characters’ love emotions in the film “Pleasantville”. Cognitive metaphor and metonymy theories as well as the identified multimodal meaning making resources indicating the embodiment of prevailing love emotions are applied in the analysis. Firstly, emotions, their notion, typology and somatic aspects of love emotions are discussed. Then the focus is put on multimodal constructions and their audiovisual expression. The empirical part of the article deals with the analysis of the most intense love emotions discerned in the film, namely, ecstasy and admiration, paying the primary attention to the multimodal modes used to reveal their conceptualisation.
The article is an attempt at reconstructing the concept of academic discourse based on the available Polish specialised literature. In result of analysis, it has turned out that the concept of academic discourse does not have a clear definition in Polish science yet and its name is often used as a synonym for scientific discourse and didactic discourse. The works dealing with academic discourse may generally refer to two areas of expertise: pedagogy and linguistics. The most significant research result of this article is coming up with the typology of academic discourse from pragmatic point of view. The following subtypes have been separated within academic discourse: scientific-academic discourse, didactic-academic discourse, educational-academic discourse, administrative-academic discourse and public-academic discourse. Each type of academic discourse has features which are common for all subtypes (they have the same place of discourse functioning and strict connection between discourse participants and an academic institution) as well as differentiating features, among which there is a purpose of activity within each subtype of academic discourse (purposes such as cognition, working out didactic methods, teaching, managing the university and creating a positive, favourable social image of the university).

Translation Editology: Conceptualising the Unknown Known Interdisciplinary Area of Translation Studies
The present article is an attempt to examine the status, present the legitimacy and underscore the complexity of the field of ‘translation editology’ within a broad interdisciplinary framework of Translation Studies. This area of translation research is focused on the theoretical and critical reflection on the editorial and publishing practice of translated literature. The overriding objective of the paper is to elaborate an interpretative mechanism of editorial practices in translation and to portray its practical application. Following this line, a three-layer model of translation editorial analysis is suggested. While at the micro-level the functional structural analysis elicits how the text is mediated through specific instances of language use, the meso-level relates to interpersonal dimension centring on translator’s relation to the authorial intentions and the way of their actualisation and concretisation. The macro-level of analysis is discursive, reviews the editor’s “tendentious rewriting” or manipulation of the target text. This model is probed in the analysis of 1983 editorial work performed by Victor Koptilov for the re-publication of 1912 Ukrainian translation of Longfellow’s masterpiece The Song of Hiawatha
