Knyga kaip kultūrų konflikto taškas: šv. Adalberto misija Prūsuose

    Get PDF
The first Prussians’ encounter with Christianity ended in the martyrdom of the missionary St. Adalbert; it took place on the 23rd of April, 997. What provoked his martyrdom is far from clear to this day. According to some hypotheses, the Prussians were provoked by St. Adalbert’s unfamiliar pontifical vestments that he put on to celebrate Mass, or simply by his unacceptable appearance. The present paper draws attention to the beginning of the conflict with the Prussians. Its cause is St. Adalbert’s unusual behaviour – reading prayers from a book. This could have been perceived as a way of communicating with the supernatural world which threatened the community, as a magic charm. It is important to note the day when St. Adalbert was martyred. According to the Christian calendar this is St. George’s day. In many countries of Central and Eastern Europe this is the day when working the fields symbolically begins. Later sources attest that the pagan Prussian festival of the rebirth of nature, the celebration of spring which was supposed to guarantee future harvest, coincided with this day. Christian missionary with his rituals, externally based on the reading of liturgical books, may have created a perception that his activities would harm future fertility of the earth and animals

Romane „Čevenguras“ A. Platonovas pavaizdavo įvairias nacionalinio charakterio apraiškas ir sukūrė apibendrintą ruso stačiatikio paveikslą. Straipsnio autorius daro prielaidą, kad unikalios dvasinės rusų liaudies ir kultūros misijos idėjos samprata galima apibūdinti, nors ir ne visai išsamiai, kūrybinę A. Platonovo filosofiją

    Filosofiniai Senekos raštai: humanizmo pamokos?

    Get PDF
Seneca’s name is often associated with the notion of „humanism“. In this article we attempt to verify and define the meaning of this notion in the context of Seneca’s writings. Our question is: what kind of philosophy, according to Seneca, can be useful and delivering to a man afflicted with life’s many misfortunes? This question encompasses all the main meanings of both Latin humanitas and later European “humanism”, because it concerns “humanities” (humanitas as paide%a), which best of all suites the true human nature (humanitas as the true essence of human being); we also ask: what should philosophic education be so that it helps the struggling humankind (humanitas as filanqrwp%a). Such an amalgam of ideas is not our construct, but is actually found in the writings by Seneca himself. However, in this way following Seneca’s thought, we discover rather paradoxical species of “humanism”, the one which should be called “cosmo-centrism”

Romantizmas ir krikščioniškoji Vakarų kultūros tradicija

The article clarifies the notion of unity seen in the history of Western (Christian) culture; the notion is implied in investigations made by Rene Burke, Aidan Day, George Steiner. According to these scholars, the only cultural break that can be clearly seen in Western culture took place at the end of the 19th – beginning of the 20th centuries, when egocentric and nihilistic elements of the modern/postmodern conception of the world began to come into opposition with the Christian world-view. While considering the tension between traditional and “antitraditional” Western cultures, the article stresses the philosophical assumptions that undermine both cultures. The first signs of this cultural break can be seen in the period of Romanticism. Even though Romanticism is still strongly connected with the Western tradition, including its Christian aspect (the romanticists were strongly interested in the spiritual and the transcendental), the main aspects of Romanticism (egocentrism, homotheism, anticommunal tendencies) strongly oppose the tradition of Christian conception of the world. In the works of English, German, Polish, Russian Romanticists a double movement can be observed away from the traditional Christian philosophy and back towards it. Lithuanian Romanticism has hardly any such phenomena of double movement, it doesn’t quarrel with Christian thought. The article ends with the consideration of possible causes and consequences of this lack of opposition to the Christian world-view seen in Lithuanian Romanticism

Šio straipsnio tyrinėjimo objektas – Vladimiro Nabokovo romanas Juokas tamsoje (Laughter in the Dark, 1938). Straipsnyje nagrinėjamas intertekstinis literatūros ir muzikos ryšys. Tokio pobūdžio ryšys atsiskleidžia tarp trijų Karmen istorijų – P. Mérimée, A. Bloko ir G. Bizet – ir tarp R. Wagnerio operos Siegfriedas, A. Belyj romano Peterburgas bei G. Flauberto romano Ponia Bovary.Intertekstinis aiškinimas padeda išspręsti vieną romano pasiūlytų mįslių: paaiškina Irmos mirties epizodo prasmę ir jo svarbą. Literatūros ir muzikos sąsaja Nabokovo knygoje pasiūlo naujų perskaitymo galimybių ir leidžia kitokiu aspektu pažvelgti į teksto struktūrą
