Vydūnas ir jo dramos: tapatybės, lūžiai ir iškreiptos figūros
In this research paper the play Probočių šešėliai [The Shadows of Forefathers] written by famous Lithuanian philosopher Vidunas is analysed in details. Besides classical critical analysis of the text, deconstruction as the method is used as well, making the meanings intended by the author reversible. The innovation of the research is the third methodical part of it – the hermeneutic-phenomenological protocol. The results and the process of the research are described concerning the dynamics of time and problem solving. What is most often left undisclosed in a real research – its temporal duration, findings and disappointments, here is very strongly put on the surface of the consciousness. The researcher in this way is disclosed as the embodied and the embedded agent in the process of research. Analysis of the direct object of the research – the play Probočių šešėliai – along these methodical lines of structural deconstruction and hermeneutic-phenomenological protocol clarifies the figure of Visuomis as a non empathic philosopher. This predicate might be projected to the whole spiritualistic philosophy of Vidunas. Much discussed philosophy of the body developed by Vidunas is strongly questioned, analysing a few examples from the life of Vidunas himself: the early childhood and the turningpoint event of his falling from the ship. The whole body of Vidunas in this event was shocked, as he describes himself, and Vidunas understood in the new light the relevance of the body in the experience of the world. Does this event might be considered as the “Lithuanian version” of the collision of God of the Philosophers and God of Abraham, Jacob and Isaac
Pseudo-Hesiodo Heraklio skydas
The article deals with the short epic poem known as The Shield of Heracles. This poem was ascribed to Hesiod in Antiquity, but nowadays the most scholars believe it was composed later than Hesiod’s other works, probably in the sixth century B.C. It tells about Heracles’ battle with Cycnus. The opening verses (1–56) of the poem are borrowed from the “Catalogue of Women”. The largest part of the work is the extended description of Heracles’ shield based on the shield of Achilles (Il. 18. 478–609). Various explanations of the poem’s date, authorship, composition, content and historical significance have been offered by modern scholars. Some literary versions of the legend of Cycnus are analysed in the present article. The Shield of Heracles was known to Stesichorus. It is supposed that in his poetry Stesichorus wanted to give more explanation of Apollo’s repugnance of Cycnus. For this reason the poet reexamined the myth and produced a new mythological version: Cycnus killed passers in order to build a temple for Apollo out of their heads. This version of the myth must has been used by Euripides (Eur. HF. 392 sqq.)

Graikų karų su persais recepcija romėniškoje Graikijoje: Herodotas Plutarcho akimis
The traditional image of Sparta in the European cultural tradition is an idealized distortion of reality, based on the works of non-Spartan writers in both Greek and Roman antiquity. Plutarch has influenced our image of Sparta more than any other author, though he was not the first to create the so-called Spartan mirage. Plutarch idealized Sparta, according to him the ideal of a polis community was best of all realized in the Sparta of Lycurgus. It is the ethics of the rulers, not the type of the political system, that really matters for him; the moral standards of the rulers determine the moral value of the state. The example of the Spartan ethics to the last degree has been demonstrated, according Plutarch, in the battle at Thermopylae. Plutarch regards this battle as the most important moment of the Greco-Persian wars; in his eyes it brought the final victory to Greeks at the end. Therefore he is extremely harsh in criticizing Herodotus for his description of this epizode (De malignitate Herodoti). Plutarch’s attitude towards Herodotus in this work and in Lives, which owe material to Herodotus, is extremely different. According to Plutarch, Herodotus had a personal dislike for Sparta and therefore he had blackened the greatest deed of Leonidas.Herodotus and Plutarch look at this epizode from the different points of view. Herodotus is not influenced by later Spartan ideology here. Though his narrative of Thermopylae is infused with Homeric elements, he presents it not simply as an act of heroism, but as the deepest personal tragedy of Leonidas and the 300 Spartiatai; there is a colour of ambivalence in his story. Therefore Plutarch relies more on Ephorus/Diodorus than on Herodotus reconstructing his version of events and widely uses the rhetorical and moralistic approach, elaborated already by the authors mentioned. It is the rhetorics of Plutarch and his predecessors that underlies the ideological cliché of nowadays political rhetorics
Bukolinio žanro transformacija Biono kūryboje
The article deals with the poetry of the Greek bucolic poet Bion (probably the end of the 2nd century B.C.). Nothing is known about poet’s life except that he was born at Phlossa near Smyrna. The lament Epitaphios Bionos composed by his disciple claims that Bion was poisened, but this story is probably only an invention. The longest and the best preserved of Bion’s poems is the lament Epitaphios Adonis. Seventeen fragments of his other pieces are preserved in Stobaeus, most of them are erotic in tone. Bion was the imitator of Theocritus. All three bucolic poets – Theocritus, Moschus and Bion – wrote in a poetic Doric dialect and used the same metre as well as the same common topics. The peculiar characteristics of Bion poetry and the inherited bucolic elements are discussed. Although his poems are included in the general class of bucolic poetry, the remains show little of the bucolic traces. Bion wrote erotic poetry totally unconnected with the countryside
