Aukso vilna ir auksavilnis avinas: antikinių literatūros šaltinių liudijimai ir interpretacija
[full article, abstract in English; abstract in Lithuanian]
The Golden Fleece figures in Greek mythology as the objective of the voyage of the Argonauts. The incompatability of the object of the search with the effort invested in its acquisition has furthered discussion of the real meaning of the Golden Fleece, which has generally been accepted to be a metaphor since antiquity. Modernity, especially at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, has been productive and inventive in the decipherment attempts of the metaphor’s hidden meaning. A number of interpretation theories has been developed, which, though interesting and wellargumented, are sometimes highly divergent from the interpretation of the Golden Fleece in the ancient sources. A proper understanding of the original or close to original meaning of the metaphor of the Golden Fleece requires a scrupulous look at ancient Greek and Roman testimony, an[straipsnis ir santrauka anglų kalba, santrauka lietuvių kalba]

[full article and abstract in French; abstract in English and Lithuan
Summary
Pas Pleurer by Lydie Salvayre (Ed. Seuil, 2014) belongs to one of the most prolific sub-genres of contemporary French literature, the narrative of filiation, which presents itself as an inquiry into an ascendant. These are remembrances of a woman who lived a horrifying event – in the sense of the French historian Pierre nora – an event that opens an unprecedented and radically new breach in present day thoughts. Through the memories of the Spanish war told to her by her ninety-year-old mother and the simultaneous reading of A Diary of My Times (Les Grands Cimetières Sous La Lune) by novelist Georg- es Bernanos (1938), Lydie Salvayre offers a com- plex reflection on one aspect of European history: the Spanish libertarian Revolution of the summer of
1936. The latter is recounted through the fragmen- tary memories of a forgetful witness: the mother, and by the dialogue established between her and her daughter-writer. Alongside the story of the murdered brother, the Bernanosian inter-text counterbalances, throughout the testimony of the atrocities perpetrat- ed by the Franquists on the island of Majorca, the dazzled and selective memory of a woman who had forgotten all the years that followed 1936. We show that this novel, which inscribes the memory of Span- ish history into the national memory of the French, proposes the praise of an emancipatory moment, by which the author seems to take indirect position in the re-evaluation of which the years 1968 are cur- rently the object[straipsnis ir santrauka prancūzų kalba; santrauka anglų ir lietuvių kalbomis]
[full article, abstract in English; abstract in Lithuanian]
In his propempticon poem De Vera Nobilitate, Salomon Frenzel, a humanist of the 16th century who spent his last years of activity in Riga, uses the imagery of various mythological and natural creatures (i.e., animals, mixanthropic beings etc.). These images are employed to Express matters regarding education and the relationship between nobilitas generis and nobilitas literarum in general and in Livonia. The use of this specific imagery is twofold – monsters (e.g., the Cyclops, centaurs etc.) are used mainly for the description of uneducated nobles, but more idyllic and pastoral characters (e.g., the Pegasus) are used to describe the nobles who are friends with the Muses (i.e., educated in the Renaissance humanist fashion). This paper will delve into a close reading of Frenzel’s propempticon and inspect particular examples from it, providing an analysis of them in the context of the poem.[straipsnis ir santrauka anglų kalba, santrauka lietuvių kalba]
Salomonas Frenzelis, XVI a. humanistas, paskutinius savo gyvenimo metus praleidęs Rygoje, propemptikone De vera nobilitate vartoja įvairių mitologinių ir realių gyvūnų įvaizdžius.
[article in Lithuanian; only abstract in English]
This article investigates the notion of the metaphysical and its influence on the narrator’s consciousness in contemporary Lithuanian essays. The theoretical perspective combines the theology of literature with Mikhail Bakhtin’s concept of the hidden polemic. The polemic of the narrator with the metaphysical addressee is being analyzed in three representative texts of the contemporary essay: Offering by Sigitas Parulskis (2002), The Allure of the Text by Giedra Radvilavičiūtė (2010) and Farewell to Things by Alfonsas Andriuškevičius (2015). These literary works present an artistic deautomatization of the main existential questions. The literary thought seen in the Offering is an ontological one, as it explains the metaphysical logic of human existence. The literary thought observed in The Allure of the Text and Farewell to Things is a gnoseological quest for the answers to the main questions of human existence.[straipsnis lietuvių kalba; santrauka anglų kalba]

[full article and abstract in Lithuanian; abstract in English]
This article explores the artistic image of Janina Degutytė’s poetry through the aspect of the tradition of dialogue. The poet belongs to the generation of Soviet writers – these “nomads” who sought to find their “literary tribe” strived to fill the collective consciousness, depleted and hollowed out during the postwar period, with the memory of Lithuanian poetic culture and foreign literary sources. At the onset of her artistic eandevors, Degutytė was influenced by the poetics of Eduardas Mieželaitis: hyperbolized contrasts of the great and the little, a cosmic imagination, characteristic of the era of cosmic exploration, and a rhetoric bearing semblance to the style of a publicist or a columnist. A fundamental “discussion” with this particular tradition can be observed in works from the poet’s mature artistic period, wherein cosmic imagery originates from an inner, sensory perspective.Degutytė substantially takes over the poetic school of Salomėja Nėris: she brings back and continues the tradition of emotional lyricism and further develops the model of confessional poetry. These elements of the artistic image remain pivotal in all of the poet’s works. Neither are bypassed other influences along the road to recovering tradition: these are the meditational nocturnal poetry of Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas and the symbolic motives, found in the art of Mikalojus Čiurlionis of the early 20th century, which substantiated the imagination capable of transforming the world. From the impression left by the verses of German poets Friedrich Hölderlin and Rainer Maria Rilke – the depiction of nature as an eternal homeland of man, the posing of ontological and existential questions, and the usage of the motives of perpetual sources, the all-holding hand, and ripening. It is implied that the dialogue that Degutytė’s artistic imagery holds with tradition can be associated with the movement of retrieving cultural memory, which is a feature of her generation. The individual artistic image of the poet, based on a Romantic and symbolic worldview, is startlingly multilayered and one that integrally fuses the abovementioned traditions.[straipsnis ir santrauka lietuvių kalba; santrauka anglų kalba]
[full article and abstract in Lithuanian; abstract in English]
This article is intended to describe the relations of the poetess and translator Janina Degutytė (1928–1990) with her mother. The poetry of Degutytė was exceptionally popular in the 1960s and the 1970s; it was read and rewritten by hand. In 1980, literary critic Viktorija Daujotytė was preparing a monograph about Degutytė and asked the poetess to answer some usual questions in written form. The answers from the poetess revealed her tragic childhood due to an alcohol addicted and aggressive mother. These “answers” were not known to the wide audience until they were published in 1996 as a separate publication, together with an “unfinished autobiography,” written during the last months of poetess’s life. This written story about the author’s childhood was the first and, so far, the only Lithuanian text revealing the dark side of motherhood; thus, it became an important text in Lithuanian culture. This article is an attempt to describe and understand the relationship of the poetess Degutytė with her mother. It is based on letters, autobiographical texts and poems. There are two approaches developed in the article: a phenomenological atnhropological approach, which allows us ask what kind of life was lived and how was it lived, and a narratological approach, which helps us understand how the lived life was told in words. The epistolaric material, because of its sheer quantity, is the main part of the texts connected with the mother. They depict the daily relations between the adult daughter and her mother. The letters are much less concentrated texts than poetry pieces or an autobiography, with a lot of extra contexts, such as the realities of the daily life. However, due to them, the daily life acquires its volume and duration and provides a space for concentrated but fragmentary texts of poetry and autobiography. The inclusion of the mother into the autobiographical and poetical texts in this case was not easy and natural. It cost great efforts to the writer but was always pushed by some internal wish to be told. The article summarizes a collection of autobiographical texts encompassing a period of twenty years. We are allowed to observe how slowly and with great difficulty the narration grows about the experiences from childhood, what minimal and concentrated expressions are used. The process of the poetry of Degutytė can be seen as a constant self-opening to the tragic and painful experience. Her poetry becomes more and more explicit and open in tact with the telling about the relation to her mother. This correlation is not a coincidental but is a core fact that organizes the dynamic of the creation.[straipsnis ir santrauka lietuvių kalba; santrauka anglų kalba]
[full article and abstract in Lithuanian; abstract in English]
This article analyzes the perception of women’s identity as it was created in the press in the period of Nikita Khrushchev’s rule (in the magazine Tarybinė moteris, “The Soviet Woman”) as well as in the poetry written by both men and women of the so-called 1930s generation. By taking a closer look at discourses across different levels, connections, conflicts, tensions, denials and contradictions were revealed, uncovering the complicated and tense relationship between the ideological, masculine and feminine paradigms that offer different identities. This serves to demonstrate how men and women have tried to accommodate their traditionally inherited, personal relationships with ideological perceptions. After describing the engineering of a woman’s image in the magazine and analyzing the images in male and female poetry, it became clear that this version of Soviet feminism was more regularly and consistently realized by men in their work, who had described the process of creating the Soviet world (the emergence of collective farms and the role of women in this process, ideological connection between the woman and the new order etc.). It was revealed that women were much more likely to be portrayed as negative characters in respect to the system than men, their worldview being based on values inherited from the interwar Lithuania, determining their obscurantism and secretive life. The emancipation of women in men’s discourse is almost without exception based on directly transposed Soviet postulates. A more personal perspective and relationship with a woman emerges as a traditionally inherited patriarchal paradigm of the woman-as-a-mother identity, which is disassociated from the Mother Heroine image by a personal and intimate articulation of the relationship. The images of the emancipation of Soviet women that appear in male poetry are taken up as postulates of the new system, but these images are never incorporated in the articulation of their worldview, always remaining as part of the new society’s architectonics. In the work of J. Degutytė, the only more prominent female poet of the period in question, two directions in the conception of women’s identity are observed: the official one, which shows the adopted image of hyperreality as being at the core of the new woman’s identity, an assumed woman’ self-image as being responsible for social sensitivity, and the stance of the party-appreciating mother. When the self-image of a woman is not thematized but rather manifests itself as the self-awareness of the speaking female subject, the female “I” appears as the acting subject that transforms the female attributes (emotionality, sensitivity etc.), traditionally perceived as restrictive, into opening up opportunities for action and possessing an existential perspective. The most intense exposure of the female subject to the world is portrayed as an act of creativity, whereas the creative aspirations of women in the poetry of men of the same time are associated exclusively with childbirth.[straipsnis ir santrauka lietuvių kalba; santrauka anglų kalba]
