Vilniaus universiteto dovana sudegusiai Åbo akademijos bibliotekai (1827–1829)
Expanding the research about the old Vilnius University Library launched by L. Vladimirovas, this article discusses the fact (which has never been mentioned in historiography), about a gift to the burnt library of Åbo Academy, which then belonged to the Duchy of Finland, Russian Empire. In support action, which was organised by the supreme government of Russian Empire, lots of scientific, educational and cultural institutions took part; one of them was Vilnius University. Successful research of official documents, preserved in Lithuanian State Historical Archive (one of them The books of gifts to Vilnius University, 1820–1832), and the Activity daybook (1823–1832) of Vilnius University Library, as well as lists of donated books, preserved in the Library of Helsinki National University (Catalogus librorum qui bis extant in Bibliotheca Caesareae Universitatis Vilnensis) and in Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine (Katalog ksiąg dubletowych Biblioteki Uniwesyteckiej Wilenskiej oddanych dla zgorzaley Biblioteki Abowskiej i tamże odeslanych roku 1829 dnia 28 lutego), allowed us to specify chronology of this charity act, discover its effectors in Vilnius, and provide qualitative and quantitative parameters of donated books. It was identified, that the shipment of books delivered from Vilnius no earlier than 1829 February 28, consisted of 1481 volumes, mainly doublet books on different topics, which were deposited to the Helsinki University. Alexander Wictor Bohatkiewicz, a librarian and a bibliographer in Vilnius University Library, played a crucial role in the selection of the books. At present, the best part of the donated books is preserved in the National Library of Helsinki University. Completed research makes a premise to a historical digital reconstruction of the donated collection. Remiantis ,,Dovanų Vilniaus universitetui knyga, 1820–1832, Vilniaus universiteto bibliotekos ,,Veiklos dienynu“ (1823–1832) bei dovanotų knygų sąrašais, saugomais Suomijos universiteto („Catalogus librorum qui bis extant in Bibliotheca Caesareae Universitatis Vilnensis“) ir Ukrainos („Katałog ksiąg dubletowych oddanych dla zgorzałey Bibljoteki Abowskiej i tamże odesłanych roku 1829 dnia 28 lutego“) nacionalinėse bibliotekose, straipsnyje tikslinama šios labdaringos akcijos chronologija, atskleidžiami vykdytojai Vilniuje, dovanotų knygų skaičius ir tematika. Atliktas tyrimas sudaro prielaidas dovanoto rinkinio istorinei skaitmeninei rekonstrukcijai
Levas Vladimirovas Conception of Bibliophilia
Professor Levas Vladimirovas may be considered as one of the most outstanding and productive representatives of librarianship, book science and information sciences of the second half of the 20th century in Lithuania. On the basis of published and unpublished sources this article attempts for the first time to review the professor’s activities and role in the organized movement of book lovers which started in 1974 and which has not been disclosed and evaluated until now. The research reveals the situation of Lithuanian bibliophilia in the interaction of possibilities and restrictions of the Soviet period, the conditions under which it could exist, and the interpretation of its conception on the ideological level. The coverage of a broader context allowed to assess L. Vladimirovas’ attitude towards bibliophilia and its functions impartially. Although professor’s heritage, related to issues of bibliophilia history and theory, is not large, nevertheless his insights enable to conceive the general conception of bibliophilia in Soviet Lithuania that has been formed on the ideological level better and significantly supplements it. It must be noted that L. Vladimirovas has not avoided the tendency of dual understanding of bibliophilia characteristic to the Soviet period. He treated bibliophilia either as an elementary liking of books, accumulating books or simply love for books, or as collecting of rare and valuable books to which he traditionally looked unfavourably and identified it with snobbish bibliophilia or bibliomania. In his works and his outgivings both in the Soviet period and in the period of independent Lithuania L. Vladimirovas described bibliophilia as a mass phenomenon.
The objective of this article is to ascertain most significant fields of the academic library activities, which have an impact on strengthening the library’s role as a partner in academic community, as well as to assess VUL capacities to see what kind of current or future activities may contribute to the building-up of such role in VU community. Analysis of recent LI S literature reveals the key trends in development of academic libraries, their innovative change and challenges – open access, managing of research data; research support; research assessment, scientific research; allows to analyse one particular library in order to see if and at what scale these trends can be traced in VUL . It was established that VUL contributes to practical implementation of open access, collaborates with VU and academic community in the projects of research data management, carries out bibliometric research, helps to form research support services, promotes the Library’s scholarly research and contributes to formation of the institution’s research potential. Description of new activities is important for the management of change. Adjustment of organizational structure, introduction of new positions and their description facilitate achievement of this purpose. It allows informing academic and library community about new activities and functions of the library; the Library assumes obligation to develop these activities, and employees are encouraged to meet high qualification requirements, whereas the Library looks for the ways to improve competencies of the personnel.
Dokumentinio paveldo judėjimas iš Sovietų Sąjungos į Lenkiją trečiajame XX a. dešimtmetyje
The paper explores the displace of Polish archives from the Soviet Union that was performed in 1920s according to the Riga Peace Treaty of 1921 and other international agreements. The aim of the research is to reconstruct the process of displace, based on the archival sources and literature. The object of the research is those documents that were preserved in the archives of Belarus and together with archives from other republics were displaced to Poland. The exploration leads to clarification of the selection of document fonds to be displaced, the actual process of movement and the explanation of the role that the archivists of Belarus performed in the history of cultural relationships between Poland and the Soviet Union. The articles of the Treaty of Riga had been formulated without taking into account the indivisibility of archive fonds that is one of the most important principles of restitution, which caused the failure of the treaty by the Soviet part.Straipsnyje aptariama Lenkijos archyvų fondų restitucijos ХХ a. trečiajame dešimtmetyje problema, susijusi su Rygos taikos sutartimi ir kitais tarptautiniais susitarimais, vykdant Lenkijos archyvų grąžinimą Lenkijai iš Sovietų Sąjungos.
The article has as its object the elucidation of the history of the Vyshnivetsky Castle Library, definition of the content of its fund, its historical and cultural significance, correlation of the founder of the Library Mychailo Servaty Vyshnivetsky with the Book. The Vyshnivetsky Castle Library was formed in the Ukrainian historical region of Volyn’, in the Vyshnivets town – “family nest” of the old Ukrainian noble family of the Vyshnivetskies under the “Korybut” coat of arm. The founder of the Library was Prince Mychailo Servaty Vyshnivetsky (1680–1744) – Grand Hetman and Grand Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Vilno Voievoda. He was a politician, an erudite and great bibliophile. In the 30th–40th of the 18th century the main Prince’s residence Vyshnivets became an important centre of magnate’s culture in Rich Pospolyta. M. S. Vyshnivetsky’s contemporaries from the noble class and clergy knew quite well about his library and really appreciated it. According to historical documents 5 periods are defined in the Library’s history. In the historical sources the first place is occupied by old-printed books of Library collection and 7 Library manuscript catalogues dating from 1745 up to the 1835 which give information about quantity and topical structures of Library collection. The Library is a historical and cultural symbol of the Enlightenment epoch. The Enlightenment and those particular concepts and cultural images pertaining to that epoch had their effect on the formation of Library’s fund. Its main features are as follow: comprehensive nature of the stock, predominance of French eighteenth century editions, presence of academic books and editions on orientalistics as well as works of the ideologues of the Enlightenment and new kinds of literature, which generated as a result of this movement – encyclopaedias, encyclopaedian dictionaries, almanacs, etc. Besides the universal nature of its stock books on history, social and political thought, fiction were dominating. The reconstruction of the history of Vyshnivetsky’s Library, the historical analysis of the provenances in its editions give us better understanding of the personality of its owners and in some cases their philanthropic activities, and a better ability to identify the role of this Library in the culture life of society in a certain epoch.
The article analyzes the state of research on the old historical Lithuanian personal libraries, including the means of inquiry and sources. The author also analyzes the similarities between personal library research and institutional library research. It was found that book ownership marks are the main and most widely applicable personal library research source. This resource is used productively after Lithuanian scientific libraries have accelerated the scientific cataloging of the old books and started recording the provenance of each item (such catalogs include catalogs of the Elsevier, the Aldine, paleotypes, Bibliotheca Sapiehana by Vilnius University Library, Lituanica catalog by the Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, and the catalog of the 15th and 16th century books in Kaunas libraries by Kaunas County Public Library). The main and most widely applied Lithuanian historical personal library method is the provenance method, although good results are obtained using the hybrid method. The author concludes that most publications on old personal historic Lithuanian libraries limit their subjects to the personal libraries of nobility, state and religious actors (till the 19th Century) and the 19th century Lithuanian intellectuals. Historic personal libraries of lower-class individuals warrant more research (one example is Zigmantas Kiaupa’s publication about the book collections of ordinary old Kaunas’ citizens, published in 1985).Straipsnyje analizuojama senųjų istorinių Lietuvos asmeninių bibliotekų tyrimo situacija Lietuvoje (kas, kiek ir kaip šioje srityje padaryta ir daroma).
„Index Librorum, in Bibliotheca Ecclesiae Cathedralis Vilnensis“ z 1598 roku
In Lithuania the earliest collections of books were centered in churches and monasteries. One of them was the library in the Cathedral of Vilnius. „Index librorum, in Bibliotheca Eccles[iae] Cathedralis Vilnensis” was written in 1598 as a part of the inventory of the church. Publication of the inventory is supplemented with comments and an attempt to identify all titles of books. The framework of the collection of books was influenced by internal orders and dispositions of the church authorities as well as the wills of bishops and canons. The writings collected in the Cathedral library were fairly typical for such kind of institutions: the texts of the Church Fathers, theological and philosophical authorities of that time as well as juridical documents. It’s a very interesting historical source, whoch analysis helps us to reconstruct the picture of the intellectual output of priesthood in the diocese of Vilnius at the end of the 16th century.Przedmiotem niniejszej edycji jest pochodzący z końca XVI w. spis książek kościoła katedralnego w Wilnie „Index librorum, in Bibliotheca Eccles[iae] Cathedralis Vilnensis”, będący fragmentem dokumentu „Regestr Apparatow y ynszego sprzętu, złota y srebra; w koscielie S Stanisława Cathedralnym na zamku Wilienskim spisany y rewidowany w Roku Panskim 1598”.
The publication features information on research done during the Bibliotheca Lituana project. In particular the focus is on collections of memory institutions, new perspectives on library and other memory institution, i.e. archives, museums, research. Modern library history has adopted relevant theoretical perspectives from social and cultural theory. Currently these perspectives incorporate not only the activities and collections of the aforementioned institutions but also the more widely interpreted information infrastructure, that do not have libraries as their main frame of reference. Problems faced publishing archival sources are also examined. It was determined that insufficient attention is given to research and publication of old catalogues, inventories and book listings. On the other hand a unified system and methodology for publishing of the aforementioned sources does not exist. We come to a conclusion that through new research paradigms, an interdisciplinary approach and change of thought in the archival, librarian and museology communities, we can start systematic research of libraries and other memory institutions. Their results would complement the pages of the continued Bibliotheca Lituana publications.
