The metrics books of the Lithuanian Catholic Church are a heritage treasure of the whole nation. Up until the 20th century there were approximately 600 churches in Lithuania and each church had more than a dozen metrics books on average which means there could be up to 10 000–15 000 metrics books remaining in various archives. Due to the soviet occupation the church archives were damaged and metrics books were scattered to various unclear locations. Due to these unfortunate historical situation metrics books research has only begun and the books themselves are not yet fully catalogued. Some research on metrics books has been done by Zigmas Zinkevičius, Vitalija Macijauskienė, Jonas Palionis and others. Historians have shed some light on metrics book archives in various archives. It is clear that individual important research work has been done but an overall targeted research is lacking. A priority objective is to create a state wide data base of all catalogued metrics books. Second steps would be complex research of the metrics books including creation of a theoretical information base, creation of various data bases, use of the metrics books for localized research and etc. Successful research of metrics books is only possible if specific guidelines are followed. That is why this publication includes methodical instructions for researches to use when uncertain situations are encountered. The publication includes two cases of metrics books research. In the first example a couple of unique excerpts are presented with comments. The second one reconstructs the picture of the Suginčiai (Molėtai district) estate and town community during the 17th century. It includes residents of the estate, newlyweds, families and other persons). Philological notes on names are also included.
Elijo vienuolyno 1575 m. inventoriaus atvejis
Ancient book lists and catalogues are one of the most important sources of cultural and scientific history. Books listed in the documents allow us to research the history of not only various institutions and their libraries, but also the history of literature and science, the totality of writing functioned in the country at the time, as well as human and institutional cultural connections. This article has two objectives: firstly – to briefly discuss the old book lists and catalogues stored in the manuscript collections of the Wroblewski Library of Lithuanian Academy of Sciences (hereinafter – WLLAS); secondly – to publish the inventory of the Slutsk St. Elias Monastery in 1575. Manuscripts in the WLLAS funds were analyzed in order to attain these purposes. The article approach reasons to compile catalogues, information capture techniques and their changes using particular documents from Library funds. The conclusion of this publication reveals that if all in the library remaining ancient book lists/catalogues and the information contained in them were studied and systematized, a new and sizable artifact complex for the scientists would form. This would allow the continuation of already commencing works and the broadening of aspects in the studies of the library history and the ancient books collections’ composition along with changes in it. This is particularly important for studying the functioning of books or library history in their earliest periods in GDL. This paper presents the publication of the inventory from Slutsk St. Elias Monastery in 1575. This document illustrates the way books were listed at that time, providing additional knowledge about the earliest known institutional collections of books in GDL. A large St. Elijah‘s Monastery’s book collection of the relevant time period, also included in this article, strengthens the argument, that Slutsk was one of the biggest Lithuanian Grand Duchy’s written language centers in the 16th century. Extensive amount of information on historical icons, liturgical objects, variety of textiles used in the time period might appeal to anthropologists, interested in ecclesiastical art, historians of Orthodox Church researching the evolution of rites, liturgical utensils used and church architecture, finally, linguists, examining the Ruthenian language and terminology of the time.Straipsnyje pateikiama žinių apie Lietuvos mokslų akademijos Vrublevskių bibliotekoje saugomus rankraštinius knygų katalogus, inventorius, rašytus iki XIX a. pabaigos.
The Museum of Antiquities and Interim Commission of Archaeology in Vilnius which was the most significant educative scientific and cultural centre of that time both in Vilnius and Lithuania was founded in 1855 and was active for nearly a decade. The members of the Commission initiated and organized the research of the region in the fields of archaeology, history, and natural sciences. The Commission engaged an active part of the educated Lithuanian society in collecting the heritage of local history. Historical sources and scientific studies were also published by the Commission. The meetings of the Commission were held once a month, where past activities, current issues, and future plans were discussed as well as scientific reports were presented to the attendance. Extraordinary meetings were organized for the exceptional occasions, too. The minutes of the meetings of the Interim Commission of Archaeology in Vilnius are the source, which reflects comprehensively the activity of this public organization and its diverse character. The minutes also reflect the relationship between the Commission and the Tsarist administration: the flexibility in seeking suitable conditions for its activity, and the usage of the so-called Aesopian language in actualizing the history and the heritage of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The minutes reflect amply the scientific, cultural, and intellectual life of the then Lithuania. The publication presents the translated minutes of the meetings of the Interim Commission of Archaeology in Vilnius of the first three years of its activity.1855 m. Protokolai – ryškus to meto Lietuvos mokslo, kultūros ir intelektualinio gyvenimo atspindys. Šaltinio publikacijoje pateikiamas pirmųjų trejų Vilniaus laikinosios archeologijos komisijos veiklos metų posėdžių protokolų vertimas į lietuvių kalbą
Rękopiśmienne katalogi i inwentarze książek z ziem dawnego Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego – wybrane problemy zasad publikowania
Historians and publishers of historical sources have a lot of problems with the texts written in different languages and alphabets, which were created at different times, in the multilingual areas inhabited by many nations following different religions. The historians of book culture have the same problems with texts of inventories and catalogues of books, which are the primary source of knowledge about the content of libraries. At present it’s also important the historical texts to be published in the digital form. This article is a part of the discussion on this very important subject. Zebrane w tekście uwagi i propozycje stanowią próbę otwarcia dyskusji dotyczącej problemów związanych z edycjami róznorodnych spisów książek z tego terenu
Rola księży w upowszechnianiu książek w języku litewskim (na podstawie korespondencji do firmy Zawadzkich w Wilnie)
This article discusses examples of cooperation between the representatives of the Zawadzki publishing house in Wilno and catholic priests involved in distribution of books in the Lithuanian language in the Lithuania lands in mid-19th century. The sources of information are handwritten materials held in the Lithuanian State Historical Archives of Vilnius. Main object of publication are letters of catholic priests working in parishes, where Lithuanians dominate among the religious population. The article will also mention catholic priests from the Diocese of Samogitia – Jan Cyparewicz (Utena), Jan Darzyński (Kriaunos), Jacewicz (Anykščiai), Antoni Juszkiewicz (Vilkija), Jan Pacewicz (Užpaliai), Józef Sokołowski (Antazavė), Gustaw Tomkiewicz (Šiauliai), Szymon Warkałło (Šakiai). Their role was very important because catholic priesthood in the middle of 19th century belonged to the core group that formed intelligentsia from which originated a big part of activists in the Lithuanian national movement.Przedmiotem edycji są listy księży pracujących głównie w parafiach diecezji żmudzkiej, kierowane do wileńskiej księgarsko-wydawniczej firmy Zawadzkich z zamówieniami literatury w języku litewskim. Korespondencja pochodzi z kolekcji Zawadzkich, przechowywanej w Litewskim Państwowym Archiwum Historycznym. Autorami listów są Jan Cyparewicz (Uciany, 1865), Jan Darzyński (Krewno, 1863), Jacewicz (Onikszty, 1862–63), Antoni Juszkiewicz (Wilkija, 1862-63), Jan Pacewicz (Uszpol, 1863), Józef Sokołowski (Antuzów, 1871), Gustaw Tomkiewicz (Szawle, 1871), Szymon Warkałło (Szaki, 1863)
Seniausiosios išlikusios originalios 1705–1726 m. Stakliškių bažnyčios krikšto metrikų knygos fragmento (1705–1710) publikacija
Transcriptions of the Stakliškiai church metrics can be found dated from 1699 to 1798 while originals are available from 1705 to modern times. The article presents a church metrics fragment (1705–1710) which is part of the oldest remaining original Stakliškiai church baptism metrics dated 1705–1726. This period was chosen because in 1710 the plague made fundamental changes in the demographic situation of the town and other neighboring settlements. The main aim of the publication is to present the text not only semantically but also graphically. The entries are ordered this way: first column – the day, second column – name of the town, third column – the year, month and the whole text of the entry: name of the baptized baby, names of the parents, names of the godparents, area information and other additional notes e.g. information on the nobility of those present at the ceremony. The presented fragment is not only important to researchers of the specific town and area but also could serve as an example for preparing and researching other metrics books. Metrics books are important not only to genealogy researches but also to researchers of local history and specialists of demographics, linguistics or religious sciences.
Antikinių vazų „istorinė atmintis“: kolekcionavimo aspektas XIX a. Lietuvoje
The National Museum of Lithuania owns a small collection of Antique culture items. This article analyzes and identifies the history of three Antique vases from that collection: the ways in which they came to the museum, to whom they belonged, and what was the meaning of Antique in Lithuanian society in the first half of the 19th century. The reconstructed collection of count Adam Günther is compared with other collections of the Lithuanian aristocracy of that time. This article aims to reflect incentives, aspirations of that time collectors’, and their perception of the national country heritage as well as the common European heritage.Lietuvos nacionaliniame muziejuje saugomas nedidelis Antikos paveldo rinkinys. XIX a. Lietuvoje kauptų antikinių senienų bei straipsnyje apžvelgiamų kitų šaltinių pagrindu aptariamas Antikos suvokimas apskritai ir jo pokyčiai to meto visuomenėje
Vilniaus laikinosios archeologijos komisijos paveldo misija
The heritage mission of Vilnius Temporary Archaeological Commission (1855–1865) is twofold. It strived to implement the Lithuanian cultural heritage continuum idea of “the past for the future” while performing a didactic task: to collect and publish historical documents and through the use of “Lithuanian antiquities” to organize the historical exposition of Vilnius Museum of Antiquities, creating conditions to recognize an objective history of Lithuania, in particular the period of Polish-Lithuanian union. Relying on 19th century positivistic attitudes this Commission sought for a position of an objective history observer, praising facts and proclaiming that the task of a historian is to show how it really was.Vilnius Temporary Archaeological Commission formed its position as the center for cultural heritage guardianship in the Northwester Krai of Imperial Russia. It regulated archeological excavations, performed scientific consulting and expertise functions, carried out archaeographical and museographical work. However it failed to organize systematic heritage accounting and protection of immovable heritage and sites of worth. Vilnius Temporary Archaeological Commission tried to draw public attention to a subdued nation’s need of an objective look at its land’s past and peculiarities, through the witnesses of its past – historical documents and musealias.Straipsnyje analizuojama Vilniaus laikinosios archeologijos komisijos (1855–1865) paveldo misijos pobūdis. Įžvelgiami keli pagrindiniai šios misijos bruožai. Ši komisija formavosi kaip svarbiausia Lietuvos paveldo globos institucija bei archeografijos komisija. Siekė įgyvendinti kontinuumo „praeitis–ateičiai“ uždavinius: žinoti ir saugoti Lietuvos paveldo vertybes bei objektyviai atskleisti Lietuvos istoriją, ypač Lenkijos ir Lietuvos unijos laikotarpį, pasitelkus „praeities liudininkus“ – istorinius dokumentus, muziejines vertybes, istorinius paminklus. Šios komisijos paveldo misija buvo paremta XIX a. pozityvistinės istorijos ir lyginamųjų tyrimų metodologinėmis nuostatomis
