Rašytojos Žemaitės (meninė) gyvenimo rekonstrukcija remiantis archyvalijomis
[full article and abstract in Lithuanian; summary in English]
The surviving private writings and egodocuments of Julija Žymantienė-Žemaitė (1845–1921), a classic of Lithuanian literature, are rather numerous. The writer wrote her autobiography, which does not cover her whole life; it describes the period up to the beginning of her creative path, around 1892, but this autobiographical work provides plenty of facts from her life: the noble descent of her parents, the writer’s childhood, youth, first studies, marriage, troubles of marital life, her thirst for reading and education. Where the autobiography ends, Žemaitė’s autobiographic stories can help us recreate her life, i.e. Pasiklausymai (Overhearings), Iš mano atsiminimų (From My Memories), Iš baudžiavos laikų (From the Times of Serfdom), Pirmieji mano žingsniai (My First Steps), Kalėjime (In Prison), etc. Her piece of writing Povilas Višinskis created in America in 1916 where Žemaitė recalls her first creative steps is especially important. A separate group of egodocuments – Žemaitė’s letters to Povilas Višinskis (1875–1906), a journalist, literary critic and the writer’s neighbour – can be distinguished. Over 70 letters survived to our days. The letters reveal the very beginning of her creative work, its twists and turns and the writer’s doubts when she sent nearly every short story or play she wrote to her young friend expecting his criticism or approval. Her later letters exhibit self-confidence, versatile personality development. Žemaitė’s letters to her dear friend and beloved person Konstantinas Petrauskas (1878–1947) make up yet another group of egodocuments. Whereas the letters to Višinskis focus on creative work, love prevails in this case. Žemaitė wrote over 60 letters to Petrauskas during the period 1911–1921. Their correspondence displays Žemaitė’s late love and its vitality rendering special shades and traits to her personality as well as provides a broad panorama of the political and cultural life of Vilnius in 1911–1915.[straipsnis ir santrauka lietuvių kalba; santrauka anglų kalba]
Julijos Žymantienės-Žemaitės (1845–1921) privačiosios raštijos ir egodokumentų išliko gana daug. Paminėtina autobiografija, apimanti laikotarpį iki kūrybinio kelio pradžios 1892 metais, kurioje atsiskleidžia bajoriška tėvų kilmė, pirmi rašytojos mokslai, šeimyninio gyvenimo sunkumai, troškimas šviestis. Vėliau Žemaitės gyvenimą padeda atkurti autobiografiniai pasakojimai „Pasiklausymai“, „Iš mano atsiminimų“, „Iš baudžiavos laikų“, „Pirmieji mano žingsniai“, „Kalėjime“, taip pat rašinys „Povilas Višinskis“ (1916 m.), kuriame prisimenami pirmieji kūrybiniai žingsniai. Kaip atskirą egodokumentų grupę galima išskirti Žemaitės laiškus spaudos darbuotojui, literatūros kritikui Povilui Višinskiui (1875–1906, išliko daugiau nei 70 laiškų), taip pat artimam bičiuliui Konstantinui Petrauskui (1878–1947, išliko daugiau kaip 60 laiškų). Laiškuose P. Višinskiui ryškėja kūrybos vingiai, abejonės, asmenybės formavimasis, laukiama kūrybos mėginimų kritikos ar pritarimo tam. O štai svarbiausia laiškų K. Petrauskui tema yra meilė, atskleidžianti šio vėlyvo rašytojos jausmo gyvybingumą, suteikianti asmenybei ypatingų spalvų ir bruožų. Be to, laiškai plačiai atveria 1911–1915 metų politinio ir kultūrinio Vilniaus gyvenimo foną
Autocenzūros galia: Merkinės seniūno Antano Kazimiero Sapiegos 1722–1733 m. užrašai
[full article and abstract in Lithuanian; summary in English]
The article focuses on the diary of daily activities of the elder of Merkinė Antoni Kazimierz Sapieha written during the period 1722–1733. It chronicles daily meetings, correspondence, estate administration issues, the author’s health condition, travel routes, cases heard by the Tribunal of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and other various facts of daily activities. It excludes the thoughts of reflective type; there is a clear emotional distance between the author and the events being described. The author’s rhythm of life was not only determined by economic affairs but also the work sessions of public authorities – the Tribunal, dietines, the Diet. After analysing the topics of the information recorded in the diary, an assumption of self-censorship influencing the choice of the information to be recorded is raised. Therefore, the aim of the article is to present the topics of the information recorded in the source, to discuss their informational and parenetic type thus highlighting certain aspects which could testify that the author would select the information to be recorded as well as reveal the impact of self-censorship on the diary. Before undertaking to keep a diary, the author set himself a clear goal and consciously separated both a landlord’s life from that of a politician and the life of a public person from the life of a private person. With a focus on future readers, A. K. Sapieha censored his diary but concentrated on those events which had to or could shape his positive image in the eyes of his successors. Even though the source reveals diverse episodes from the daily life of the elder of Merkinė, it also provides a dim outline of the author’s personality.[straipsnis ir santrauka lietuvių kalba; santrauka anglų kalba]
Straipsnio centre – 1722–1733 m.
[full article and abstract in Lithuanian; summary in English]
Peliksas Bugailiškis (1883–1965) – lawyer, public figure, ideologist of the regional and public movement of regional studies and the concept of regional museums, founding father of Šiauliai Museum Aušra (1923) and Šiauliai Society of Regional Studies (1927) and their long-term patron. Much has been written about his museum and regional studies related activities; his memoirs Gyvenimo vieškeliais (Along the Highways of Life) paying much attention to the said activity fields were published as well. The aim of this article is to present Peliksas Bugailiškis both as a museum worker/practitioner and as the author of the theory of museum studies on the basis of Bugailiškis’ egodocuments – his memoirs and personal correspondence. Thanks to Peliksas Bugailiškis, in the interwar period Šiauliai Museum Aušra had become the largest and best organised museum in the Lithuanian provinces: every year it organised as many as 15–20 fieldwork expeditions during which the golden fund of contemporary museum collections was collected; the collections were organised on the basis of scientific requirements; a new exposition was prepared; exhibitions were held; publishing activities began (Šiaulių metraštis and Gimtasai kraštas were published); it was sought to erect a museum building with a ‘skansen’ in Šiauliai. As regards Bugailiškis’ contribution to Lithuanian museum studies, it should be said that he stands next to the most accomplished leaders in the museum studies of that time. Being self-taught in this field, he laid theoretical foundations to museum studies and was able to prove in practice that museums could also be found in the provinces and that they had to be organised in a professional rather than amateur manner.[straipsnis ir santrauka lietuvių kalba; santrauka anglų kalba]
[full article and abstract in Lithuanian; summary in English]
The article analyzes the records of the photographer Tadas Bajorūnas, who lived and worked in Krekenava town (Panevėžys County) in 1920–1945. These records are written in a simple notebook, which contains the photographer‘s generated revenues of the year 1934–1941. After making a study of the notes, we can see if in that period the photography taking was a profitable business in a small town. Also we could see in what additional activities the photographer was engaged in and what kind of activities were most profitable for him. After the analysis of the notebook records the revenues were divided into three main groups according to the type of activity: the revenue from photographic services (they accounted for an average of 67 per cent of all the income records), the revenue from watch repairing and other revenue (for various jobs, etc.). Data collected from various sources show that not just T. Bajorūnas, but also the other photographers from smaller towns had a few crafts and were engaged in additional businesses. Many of them were skilled experimenters, constructers, repairers, who were able to carry out works, which required large-diligence, patience and precision. Tadas Bajorūnas’ records reveal not only his economic situation, but also a lot of information about the nature of his work, literacy, language usage nuances. It is the unique document and the interesting source of the knowledge of our country’s past events.[straipsnis ir santrauka lietuvių kalba; santrauka anglų kalba]

[full article and abstract in Lithuanian; summary in English]
The national poet Maironis is best known as the reformer of versification, the creator of normative language. Nevertheless, his first book was dedicated to the history of Lithuania and was extremely important in the 19th century, when history was supposed to be the most important science, and when all the European nations were concerned to have books written on the subject of national history. Many authors in Lithuania wrote on history, but only the book of Maironis, published in 1891, presented a new model of Lithuanian history, breaking the stereotype that had dominated the field for many centuries. He replaced the elegiac vision of history with an optimistic, forward-looking picture, predicting the cultural renaissance of the nation. In the second edition (1906), by adding a short history of Lithuanian literature, taking part in new periodicals, discussing cultural concerns in correspondence and writing new fictional and science works, Maironis practically realized his cultural-philosophical aims and these activities frequently served as examples for the younger generations of artists. His model of history, also of history of literature, his optimistic vison regarding the future became a common average of the awareness of the nation, and this great contribution of Maironis to the formation of the present Lithuanians is often forgotten. The goal of this article is to revive the relationship with Maironis.[straipsnis ir santrauka lietuvių kalba; santrauka anglų kalba]
[full article and abstract in Lithuanian; summary in English]
Published in the article as both a work of poetry and a historical source is the poem Senybinis aukuras (“An Olden Altar”), written in Lithuanian in 1881 by the then-26-years-old Aleksandras Burba, a cleric of the Vilnius priest seminary. The essence of its Lithuanian patriotism, grounded on the notion of the emancipation of a Lithuanian-speaking territory, is revealed. It is argued that this poem, first published in 1885, is important for historical recognition as a primary historical source. Attention is also paid to a revised version of the poem, published in 1893, which was slightly edited in accordance with the changed realities of that time. In terms of genre, the poetic work of A. Burba Senybinis aukuras may be considered a literary ballad, typologically attributed to the type of the national ballad. In this patriotic ballad, we find an alloy of an exalted Lithuanian antiquity, a somber-esque portrayal of that period (c. 1881), an incitement to act and an optimistic future. The original narrative laid out in an elevated and emotional tone, complete with interjections, exclamations, a dialogue reminiscent of the present, a mentioning of topical subjects, a depreciation of the disavowing of the language for the benefit of the Poles etc., should be treated as a peculiar literary monument from which we can judge about the poet’s space of thoughts in terms of various aspects. The act proceeds by narrating a journey in a naturalistic setting in two stages. First through a route between Ignalina and Vidiškės; later, a departure from Vidiškės takes place toward the mysterious olden altar – a sacred place recalling the times of pagan worship. In the ballad, an ever-rising tension is maintained with the finalistic structure, and the verses see an entanglement of epic, dramatic and lyrical components. An appeal is made to the revival of the forebears’ spirit; the Lithuanian spirit is revealed by relying on the ancient past, not unwilling to relate it with Christianity in the present and with godly assistance in the future. The „olden altar“, exalted in the verses of A. Burba, was located on the outskirts of the Dūdos folwark, near the cemetery of the Antakmenė village, and remains there to this day. It is a designated archeological monument and a state-protected geological heritage site. It is offered to promote it further for purposes both tourism-related and otherwise by linking it with the meanings of A. Burba’s poetic creation, which are examined in this article through various aspects. The analysis of this particular as much as other poetic works of the 19th century can be beneficial not only to philologists and literary theorists but to historians as well, as the verses written under the conditions of the hounding of the Lithuanian language and the prohibition of the press become an important source for recognizing the mindsets, worldviews and environments of the past generations. Witness accounts, conveyed alongside feelings and experiences by the poets in their works, often possess a certain worth as documentary / egodocumentary elements, the analysis and disclosure of which is a delicate task for the researchers of the past.[straipsnis ir santrauka lietuvių kalba; santrauka anglų kalba]

[full article and abstract in Lithuanian; summary in English]
Jurgis Šaulys, one of the most outstanding personalities of the Lithuanian national revival of the late 19th century–first half of the 20th century, left a deep mark on the Lithuanian culture, diplomacy, and politics. Alongside with Kazys Grinius, Jonas Vileišis, Povilas Višinskis and others, he stood at the origins of the Democratic Party, edited the Lithuanian newspaper Varpas and other periodicals, wrote a lot on public, political and cultural issues and left a deep imprint on Lithuanian literary criticism. While studying economics and finance at the University of Bern in 1903–1912, he did not discontinue his public activities and journalistic work. Šaulys corresponded with prominent personalities of the Lithuanian national revival; he did not only write letters to Lithuanians but also wrote to the Polish Vilnius press; while on vacation, he would come back from Switzerland to his homeland to participate in the excavations of Lithuanian hillforts. After graduation from the University of Bern with a doctorate in finance, Šaulys returned to Vilnius and found placement at the Vilnius Land Bank as well as took an active part in the public national life. At the Vilnius Seimas held in September 1917 he was elected to the Council of Lithuania and declared the Act of Independence of Lithuania of 16 February 1918 together with its 20 members. During the period of the Republic of Lithuania he became the first officially approved diplomat of his country; he represented Lithuania’s interests in the capacity of an ambassador in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, the Holy See, and Poland. In pre-war Lithuania Jurgis Šaulys was known as a dedicated bibliophile; he had accumulated a rich library of Lithuanian literature; he was a connoisseur of arts and culture. The article discusses the correspondence between Jurgis Šaulys and a prominent Lithuanian public figure, writer Gabrielė Petkevičaitė-Bitė. Together with other nationally-spirited educated women, she organised the society Žiburėlis which intended to support talented poor pupils and students abroad because after Vilnius University was closed by the Tsarist government in 1832, there were no schools of higher education in Lithuania. Thanks to Petkevičaitė-Bitė, Šaulys received a scholarship as well as excellent education in the West. He was one of the first participants in the Lithuanian national revival movement to receive a doctorate in the West. The correspondence between Šaulys and Petkevičaitė continued for about 20 years. Her letters to Šaulys contain a number of interesting facts in relation to both Šaulys’ public activities and the twists and turns of his personal life enabling a better understanding of his period as well as his personality and the people he communicated with.[straipsnis ir santrauka lietuvių kalba; santrauka anglų kalba]

Šiaulių apskrities Povilo Višinskio viešosios bibliotekos darbuotojų egodokumentai: atsiminimai iš tremties, dienoraščiai
[full article and abstract in Lithuanian; abstract in English]
The article examines the memoirs and diaries written by the library employees who were born in exile and survived it. The ego-documents are kept in the library Manuscript Fund. The librarian Nijolia Kasparavičienė has assembled them into the local lore work „Long Years of Exile (1991). The collection consists of written personal memoirs of ten library employees, former political prisoners and deportees, who appended their ego-documents with photographs and documents. In 1991–1992 the former deportees organized expeditions to Kazakhstan and Siberia. In such a way two diaries titled as The Second Expedition to Carlag (1991, August 9–19) and „The Siberia reaches“ (1992, August 4–22) were formed. The impressions of the expeditions were written down in a diary form by the librarian, the deportees’ daughter Nijolia Kasparavičienė. The basic idea of the memoirs suggests that one’s own destiny is marked by the fate of the native country Lithuania. The diary recorded the visited places, the encountered people who had expressed their attitude about the past and the prediction about independent Lithuania‘s future. The author of the diaries did not use any literature or historical material. The diaries recorded only personal experiences, data and events.
