    No full text

Characterization of the phenolic profile, antioxidant and neuroprotective activity of leaf hydroalcoholic extracts of Euphorbia bupleuroides subsp. luteola (Kralik) maire growing wild in Algeria

    No full text
The objective of this research was to investigate the phenolic profile and some biological properties of the leaves of Euphorbia bupleuroides subsp. luteola grown wild in Algeria, still unexplored. The leaves were subjected to extraction with 80% MeOH using simple maceration (SM) and ultrasound-assisted maceration (UM) to establish the most efficient conditions for the recovery of phenolic compounds. The study of antioxidant potential suggested that SM and UM extracts displayed a superimposable activity both in the DPPH test and in the reducing power assay. On the other hand, in the Fe2+ chelating activity assay, SM was more active than UM. SM extract prevented damage induced by β-amyloid protein (Aβ) being more effective against ROS generated after treatment with Aβ. In addition, SM exhibited later protection against malondialdehyde. In conclusion, it is possible to state that simple maceration represents an effective technique for the recovery of compounds with antioxidant and neuroprotective properties from E. bupleuroides subsp. luteola leaves

Molecular dynamics of a polymer blend model on a solid substrate

    No full text
We performed extensive molecular dynamics simulations using a bead–spring model to investigate the interfacial behavior of blends of linear and cyclic polymer chains confined between two planar, attractive substrates. The model system was studied over a range of chain lengths spanning an order of magnitude in the number of beads for varying blend compositions and for two different levels of substrate affinity. For short chains, we observed the preferential adsorption of linear chains at the substrate interface when they are the majority component (10% cyclic chains) as well as at equimolar composition. In contrast, for longer chains, cyclic chains are preferentially enriched at the interface. These results extend recent findings from neutron reflectivity experiments—where the enrichment of cyclic polystyrene chains at low-energy surfaces was demonstrated—to systems under solid confinement, providing deeper insight into the structural behavior of topologically distinct polymers near interfaces. This work highlights the potential for tuning interfacial composition and properties in polymer blends through topological design, with implications for advanced coatings, membranes, and nanostructured materials

Shades of decision making in multiple sclerosis: A systematic review on economic, medical and under risk conditions choices

    No full text
Background: Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a chronic and demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system, is often associated with challenges in decision-making (DM). This systematic review aims to evaluate the performance of patients with different subtypes of MS in DM tasks, focusing on connections with cognitive impairments, emotional changes, and brain structural alterations. Methods: We conducted a systematic search, following PRISMA guidelines, for all peer-reviewed articles. We searched the following databases: Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science. This review has been registered in the Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO 2024) with the number CRD42024503190. Results: Our electronic searches identified 443 papers. After reading the full text of the selected publications and applying predefined inclusion criteria, we included 18 studies based on their pertinence and relevance to the topic. Conclusion: This review highlights the multifaceted nature of DM deficits in individuals with MS. These difficulties result from cognitive impairments such as working memory, brain structural changes, and emotional processing challenges including depression. Our findings present a comprehensive synthesis of the complexities surrounding DM in MS, emphasizing the need for future research to better understand these relationships and their implications for enhancing patient quality of life and autonomy in DM processes

    No full text

Understanding Neovascularization in Glioblastoma: Insights from the Current Literature

    No full text
Glioblastomas (GBMs), among the most aggressive and resilient brain tumors, characteristically exhibit high angiogenic potential, leading to the formation of a dense yet aberrant vasculature, both morphologically and functionally. With these premises, numerous expectations were initially placed on anti-angiogenic therapies, soon dashed by their limited efficacy in concretely improving patient outcomes. Neovascularization in GBM soon emerged as a complex, dynamic, and heterogeneous process, hard to manage with the classical standard of care. Growing evidence has revealed the existence of numerous non-canonical strategies of angiogenesis, variously exploited by GBM to meet its ever-increasing metabolic demand and differently involved in tumor progression, recurrence, and escape from treatments. In this review, we provide an accurate description of each neovascularization mode encountered in GBM tumors to date, highlighting the molecular players and signaling cascades primarily involved. We also detail the key architectural and functional aspects characteristic of the GBM vascular compartment because of an intricate crosstalk between the different angiogenic networks. Additionally, we explore the repertoire of emerging therapies against GBM that are currently under study, concluding with a question: faced with such a challenging scenario, could combined therapies, tailored to the patient’s genetic signatures, represent an effective game changer
