    No full text
The canonisation of Thomas Aquinas on 18 July 1323 was no exception to the rule. How was the idea of an original saint established in the papal court of Avignon, how was the biography of an immense intellectual translated into hagiography, how was forty years of relegation brought to an end and a legend created that could be heard by all?

    No full text
International audienceDuring the so-called “Desert” period, when Protestantism is banned in France, lay preachers replace the pastors, who disappeared from the kingdom following the Revocation. But with the institutionalisation of the Desert churches, clandestine pastors are trained from 1710s onwards. In the Vivarais region, the first minister is ordained in 1726. His colleague, Pierre Peirot, works as pastor from 1739 to 1772.Through Peirot’s long ministry, this paper draws a portrait of “model” Desert ministers. They must first train to become pastors, through an education which starts long before their studies at the seminary in Lausanne. Although this education is important, to highlight their differences with the lay preachers who worked before them, it is not as thorough as it was in the seventeenth century. They are also expected to meet the requirements which apply to pastors of Protestant communities in Modern Europe, in terms of behaviour, as well as their relationship with the faithful. Nevertheless, the clandestine aspect of their profession has an important impact on their work. Therefore, Desert pastors must also meet expectations brought on by the repression: they must enable the community to carry out their illegal activities, all the while ensuring their safety. In addition to the role of religious leaders, they must also fulfil that of leaders of a dissident movement.

First paleoenvironmental calibrations for modern pollen rain of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan: A case study of pollen - vegetation functional biogeography of Arid Central Asia

    No full text
International audienceStudying modern pollen rain in Middle Asia is crucial for understanding past climate and vegetation changes. This study presents the first dataset of pollen surface samples and vegetation plots from Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, known as the Tajikistan and Uzbekistan Surface Data Base (TUSDB), to enhance our understanding of past climate and vegetation changes in Arid Central Asia (ACA). Multivariate analysis methods, including TWINSPAN and CONISS, are used to review the primary vegetation types in Central Asia and assess pollen distribution across these types. Linear relationships, Davis indices, and R-values are applied to evaluate vegetation representativeness based on pollen abundances. Redundancy Analysis is used to compare pollen and climate parameters, and the reliability of TUSDB for local climate reconstructions is tested using transfer functions and machine learning approaches. The TWINSPAN analysis identifies vegetation types consistent with the Uzbek classification, such as desert, steppe, and cryophilous open woodlands. Nine vegetation subtypes are revealed by the pollen samples, with key contributions from trees like Juniperus spp. and Juglans regia, and non-arboreal plants like Cyperaceae and Poaceae. The study also highlights biases in pollen representation, with some tree taxa overrepresented and certain vegetation-important taxa underrepresented, which can be corrected using pollen R-values.Finally, functional trait aggregation for past pollen sequences shows similarities between modern pollen and vegetation plots. Climate reconstructions validated through transfer functions highlight the complementary role of local and global calibration datasets. These findings confirm the reliability of pollen signals for inferring Holocene climate and vegetation trends, enabling future Uzbek pollen-based reconstructions

FairTranslate: An English-French Dataset for Gender Bias Evaluation in Machine Translation by Overcoming Gender Binarity

    No full text
International audienceLarge Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly leveraged for translation tasks but often fall short when translating inclusive language -such as texts containing the singular 'they' pronoun or otherwise reflecting fair linguistic protocols. Because these challenges span both computational and societal domains, it is imperative to critically evaluate how well LLMs handle inclusive translation with a well-founded framework. This paper presents FairTranslate, a novel, fully human-annotated dataset designed to evaluate non-binary gender biases in machine translation systems from English to French. FairTranslate includes 2418 English-French sentence pairs related to occupations, annotated with rich metadata such as the stereotypical alignment of the occupation, grammatical gender indicator ambiguity, and the ground-truth gender label (male, female, or inclusive). We evaluate four leading LLMs (Gemma2-2B, Mistral-7B, Llama3.1-8B, Llama3.3-70B) on this dataset under different prompting procedures. Our results reveal substantial biases in gender representation across LLMs, highlighting persistent challenges in achieving equitable outcomes in machine translation. These findings underscore the need for focused strategies and interventions aimed at ensuring fair and inclusive language usage in LLM-based translation systems. We make the FairTranslate dataset publicly available on Hugging Face, and disclose the code for all experiments on GitHub

    No full text
Since the late 1990s, the growing framing of migration in terms of security risks in destination countries has been the subject of extensive literature, particularly in the fields of political science and critical geography. Surprisingly, however, the social sciences have paid very little attention to migrants’ perceptions of migration risks, unlike migration economics, which quickly addressed this question, making risk and its management by migrant populations a crucial component of migratory rationalities. The topical collection “On the Roads of Migration: Circulations, Risk, and the Managing of Uncertainty” aims to address this gap within the field of social sciences. The contributions acknowledge the predominant role of risks in the migratory experience and seek to initiate a structured reflection on this hyper-central yet neglected aspect of mobility trials. In response to this observation, they lay down an initial series of empirical and theoretical foundations to chart this research field, relying on case studies rooted in diverse geographical areas—French Guiana, the northern French coastline, the Île-de-France region, and Southeast Asia—and focusing on various populations, including asylum seekers, Roma populations, and migrant workers.
