Affine connections for Galilean and Carrollian structures: a unified perspective
No full textInternational audienceWe develop a classification of general Carrollian structures, permitting affine connections with both torsion and non-metricity. We compare with a recent classification of general Galilean structures in order to present a unified perspective on both. Moreover, we demonstrate how both sets of structures emerge from the most general possible Lorentzian structures in their respective limits, and we highlight the role of global hyperbolicity in constraining both structures. We then leverage this work in order to construct for the first time an ultra-relativistic geometric trinity of gravitational theories, and consider connections which are simultaneously compatible with Galilean and Carrollian structures. We close by outlining a number of open questions and future prospects
Expérience sensible et culturelle en formation linguistique pour adultes migrants : du sentiment de perte au « retour vers soi »
No full textInternational audienceOur communication proposal focuses on language training for migrant adults. Faced with the loss of their cultural, social references, etc. (Gandon, 2025), migrant adults can be considered “vulnerable speakers” (Paveau, 2017) and “voiceless” (Ravazzolo, 2019). The contexts of exile and social downgrading experienced by many of them can lead to disinvestment in social life and causes harmful cognitive unavailability in the process of language and cultural appropriation (Adami, 2020).During 15 years training with these people, we observed that the class often proved not conducive to really talking about oneself, one's experiences, one's experiences. Based on these empiric observations, we implemented an educational approach carried out with around forty migrant adults in training by offering discoveries of cultural places: museums, theaters, heritage places in the city of Lyon.The challenge of this “sensitive approach” was to contextualize learning by generating spontaneous verbal interactions beyond the formal language learning framework (Muller & Borgé, 2020), in order to bring out the learner as a “person subject” and not only as a “learning subject” (Moore and Simon, 2002). The objective was to allow the expression and sharing of experiences. Secondly, it was a question of offering people the opportunity to appropriate, along with linguistic skills, public and symbolic “spaces” to which they would not necessarily normally have access (Ravazzolo, 2019). These hypotheses, explored as part of our doctoral work, question the resonance between cultural experience (in the sense of “legitimate” culture; Bourdieu, 1979) and people’s previous personal experience (Dumont, 1981). This approach is akin to “a detour allowing a return to oneself” (De Mattia-Viviès, 2018), in the domain of the sensitive and the subjective by focusing on feeling, on affect. (Bloor et al., 2023).Through verbatim recordings recorded in situ, we will first present results which highlight linguistic-linguistic appropriation: use of lexicon of enunciation to describe or give one's opinion on an object, a cultural place (use of adjectives, subjective verbs, etc.). Then we will show the role played by places and cultural objects in the expression of life, knowledge and personal experiences. The mobilization of the senses (notably smell) evokes memories, thus offering opportunities and desires to talk about oneself. We postulate that this approach could thus alleviate the feeling of loss linked to exile.Opening language training to cultural places requires working in close collaboration with the guides and mediators of the cultural places involved in the process. Didactic aspects inevitably emerge from this collaboration which is built on the foundations of learning issues. We will end with a discussion on the educational avenues promoting this collaboration.Notre proposition de communication s’intéresse à la formation linguistique pour adultes migrants. Confrontés à la perte de leurs référents culturels, sociaux… (Gandon, à paraître), les adultes migrants peuvent être considérés comme « locuteurs vulnérables » (Paveau, 2017) et « sans-voix » (Ravazzolo, 2019). Les contextes d’exil et de déclassement social vécus par nombre d’entre eux peuvent conduire au désinvestissement de la vie sociale et provoquer une indisponibilité cognitive néfaste dans le processus d’appropriation langagière et culturelle (Adami, 2020).Pendant quinze ans formatrice auprès de ces personnes, nous avons observé que la salle de formation se révélait souvent peu propice pour parler vraiment de soi, de ses vécus, de ses expériences. Partant de ces constats de terrain, nous avons mis en œuvre une démarche pédagogique menée auprès d’une quarantaine d’adultes migrants en formation en proposant des découvertes de lieux culturels : musées, théâtres, lieux patrimoniaux de la métropole de Lyon. L’enjeu de cette « approche sensible » était de contextualiser les apprentissages en provoquant des interactions verbales spontanées au-delà du cadre formel d’apprentissage de la langue (Muller & Borgé, 2020), afin de faire émerger l’apprenant en tant que « sujet personne » et non seulement en tant que « sujet apprenant » selon les mots de Moore et Simon (2002). L’objectif était de permettre l’expression et le partage de ses expériences. En second lieu, il s’agissait de proposer aux personnes de s’approprier, en même temps que des habiletés linguistiques, des « espaces » publics et symboliques auxquels ils n’auraient pas forcément accès habituellement (Ravazzolo, 2019). Ces hypothèses, explorées dans le cadre de notre travail doctoral, interrogent la mise en résonance entre l’expérience culturelle (au sens de culture « légitime » ; Bourdieu, 1979) et l’expérience personnelle antérieure des personnes (Dumont, 1981). Cette démarche d’apprentissage hors les murs s’apparente à « un détour permettant un retour vers soi » (De mattia-Viviès, 2018), dans le domaine du sensible et du subjectif en faisant au ressenti, à l’affect (Bloor et al., 2023). À travers des verbatims enregistrés in situ, nous présenterons tout d’abord des résultats qui mettent en valeur l’appropriation linguistico-langagière : utilisation de lexique de l’énonciation pour décrire ou donner son avis sur un objet, un lieu culturels (emploi d’adjectifs qualificatifs, de verbes subjectifs…). Puis nous montrerons le rôle joué par les lieux et objets culturels sur l’expression du vécu, des connaissances et expériences personnelles. La mobilisation des sens (notamment l’odorat) évoquent les souvenirs, offrant ainsi opportunités et désirs de parler de soi. Nous postulons que cette démarche pourrait ainsi atténuer le sentiment de perte lié à l’exil.Ouvrir la formation linguistique aux lieux culturels nécessite de travailler en étroite collaboration avec les guides et médiateurs des lieux culturels impliqués dans la démarche. Des aspects didactiques émergent inévitablement de cette collaboration qui se construit sur les bases des enjeux d’apprentissage. Nous terminerons par une discussion sur les pistes didactiques favorisant cette collaboration
Restarted contractive operators to learn at equilibrium
No full textInternational audienceBilevel optimization offers a methodology to learn hyperparameters in imaging inverse problems, yet its integration with automatic differentiation techniques remains challenging. On the one hand, inverse problems are typically solved by iterating arbitrarily many times some elementary scheme which maps any point to the minimizer of an energy functional, known as equilibrium point. On the other hand, introducing parameters to be learned in the energy functional yield architectures very reminiscent of Neural Networks (NN) known as Unrolled NN and thus suggests the use of Automatic Differentiation (AD) techniques. Yet, applying AD requires for the NN to be of relatively small depth, thus making necessary to truncate an unrolled scheme to a finite number of iterations. First, we show that, at the minimizer, the optimal gradient descent step computed in the Deep Equilibrium (DEQ) framework admits an approximation, known as Jacobian Free Backpropagation (JFB), that is much easier to compute and can be made arbitrarily good by controlling Lipschitz properties of the truncated unrolled scheme. Second, we introduce an algorithm that combines a restart strategy with JFB computed by AD and we show that the learned steps can be made arbitrarily close to the optimal DEQ framework. Third, we complement the theoretical analysis by applying the proposed method to a variety of problems in imaging that progressively depart from the theoretical framework. In particular we show that this method is effective for training weights in weighted norms; stepsizes and regularization levels of Plug-and-Play schemes; and a DRUNet denoiser embedded in Forward-Backward iterates
Les territoires qui disent non ! Mobilisations et mutation de l'action publique
No full textChaire « Transformations de l’action publique »International audienceDes mobilisations territoriales, comme celles contre les mégabassines à Sainte-Soline, le stockage des déchets nucléaires à Bure ou les éoliennes offshore en Bretagne, dessinent la géographie des luttes partout en France. Ces mouvements, qui ont émergé dans les années 1970 contre des projets industriels, comme les centrales nucléaires ou le TGV, s'inscrivent dans une histoire plus large de résistance axée sur le territoire. Aujourd'hui, les mobilisations contestent les projets liés à la transition écologique (éoliennes, photovoltaïque) et à la gestion forestière ou les transformations urbaines. Cet ouvrage analyse l'évolution des relations entre mobilisations territoriales et action publique, dépassant la seule logique conflictuelle. Si la répression et le maintien de l'ordre public restent des réponses fréquentes, elles ne résument pas la totalité des interactions entre pouvoirs publics et mouvements sociaux. L'ouvrage, qui combine contributions de chercheurs et témoignages d'acteurs de terrain, explore ces dynamiques, en éclairant aussi les espaces de dialogue et de transformation possibles. Destiné à un large public (chercheurs, militants, élus, citoyens), cet ouvrage propose une réflexion croisée pour comprendre les enjeux actuels des luttes territoriales et leur impact sur l'action publique.
Philologue, linguiste, écrivain. L’historien selon Ernst Cassirer et Erwin Panofsky
No full textInternational audienceReader, writer, poet, philologist and linguist are some of the ways Ernst Cassirer and Erwin Panofsky describe the great historian. This paper proposes to examine these qualifiers, and in doing so to study the ways both thinkers conceive of the historian’s relation to language. It will also look at their portraits of two great historians of their time: Aby Warburg and Wilhelm Vöge. Finally, the paper will specify Cassirer’s and Panofsky’s conception of historiography and draw some implications for the philosophy of symbolic forms and iconology.Lecteur, écrivain, poète, philologue, linguiste sont autant de façons dont Ernst Cassirer et Erwin Panofsky décrivent le grand historien. L’article propose de prendre ces qualificatifs au sérieux et d’étudier ce faisant la façon dont les deux penseurs conçoivent le rapport de l’historien au langage. Il examinera aussi les portraits qu’ils dressent de grands historiens contemporains : Aby Warburg et Wilhelm Vöge. Récits du mauvais apprentissage linguistique : topoï appliqués à la langue latine
No full textInternational audienceLorsque l’apprentissage des langues vivantes étrangères est raconté dans les récits fictionnels et factuels des XVIe et XVIIe siècles, la langue latine constitue un modèle ambivalent. Elle trône en effet au sommet de la hiérarchie des langues à maîtriser pour les domaines savants, religieux et courtisans, tandis que la description grammaticale des langues, y compris les plus lointaines comme le tupinamba (Voir l’Arte da lingoa Brasilica, de Luís Figueira, Lisboa, Manoel da Silva, 1621), est calquée sur celle du latin. Cette langue doit donc être apprise, mais les discours qui concernent les pratiques de cet apprentissage l’érigent volontiers, au contraire, en contre-modèle. Son acquisition, qui consume les années de jeunesse, coûte en effet « trop cher » (Essais, Montaigne, I, « De l’institution des enfants ») et est vectrice de représentations critiques qui se structurent en topoï. À partir de discours tenus par certaines des œuvres de notre corpus, notre présentation s’attachera à les détailler et à les contextualiser. L’apprentissage du latin ne donne par exemple lieu qu’à la maîtrise d’une langue figée, qui devient alors un motif comique chez Des Périers, Rabelais et Cervantès. Il est aussi le lieu de construction d’une mémoire d’anciens écoliers qui le décrivent comme un véritable calvaire : Françoise Waquet (Le latin ou L’empire d’un signe: XVIe-XXe siècle, Paris, Albin Michel, 1998) détaille ce topos chez Rousseau et Unamuno, mais il est déjà présent, et se cristallise autour de certaines grammaires et ouvrages didactiques, chez Rabelais, L’Hermite ou dans le Viaje de Turquía. Nous espérons ainsi montrer que ces discours dévalorisants concernant les pratiques d’apprentissage du latin se forment comme des contrepoints aux pratiques d’apprentissage des langues étrangères qui prônent une maîtrise de la langue en situation et via un apprentissage qui ne passe pas par la grammaire mais par la conversation et le dialogue débrouillard
The mineralogical composition of Jezero Crater Western Fan: Multigaussian modeling of Perseverance/SuperCam near-infrared observations and overview of major units
No full textInternational audienceThe analysis of the mineralogical composition of rocks within the Jezero crater, Mars, enables the reconstruction of the aqueous activity history of the site, formed during the planet’s early epochs. Numerous secondary minerals resulting from aqueous alteration, as well as some primary minerals, are observable through near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy, as performed by the IRS/SuperCam instrument onboard the Perseverance rover. The characterization of these minerals, their distribution within geological units, as well as the composition of their assemblages, is crucial for deciphering the chemical, climatic, and geological history of the Jezero crater. In order to systematically study the growing number of IR spectra collected by the instrument, we have developed an automated method for extracting the characteristics of absorption bands, based on their modeling using a combination of Gaussian curves (MultiGM). The application of this method to the entire IRS dataset reveals a significant diversity of minerals distributed throughout the rover traverse, with a near-systematic presence of phyllosilicates in bedrocks, as well as increasingly frequent occurrences of carbonates on the delta, particularly within the Margin unit. These carbonates exhibit variable 2.5 m band positions attributed to different Fe and Mg compositions. The delta front presents the sole unit generally enriched in Fe/Mg sulfates (Yori Pass/Hogwallow Flats) accompanied by occurrences of bassanite (hydrated CaSO4), whereas the presence of sulfates in other delta units and the crater floor is more sporadic and corresponds to fracture/vesicle fills. Finally, almost all the rocks analyzed with IRS/SuperCam are notably dominated by phyllosilicates signatures (Fe/Mg-smectites, serpentine), excepted for a few outcrops caping the Delta. This phyllosilicate presence witnesses the extended surficial (smectites) and hydrothermal (serpentine) aqueous alteration of Jezero’s rocks, either in situ or carried from the watershed
Emotional Labor and Emotion Work in French School Canteens
No full textInternational audienceIn France, school canteens are still often stereotyped as impersonal spaces serving bland, industrially produced food. On closer inspection, however, this institution does more than simply fulfil a biological need, or even try to pass on nutritional knowledge to children. In the refectory, children interact with peers and canteen staff, exchanging food as gestures of affection, laughing, sometimes crying; the canteen staff feels pride or disappointment in the children’s behavior and reactions to the meals they prepare.Since 2023, I have been conducting a qualitative study in three school canteens, in a working-class district of Paris, in a rural school, and in an upper-class neighbourhood of Lyon. In all three, meal preparation and service are emotionally charged for staff, while eating can evoke comfort, affection, frustration, or even repulsion for children. I aim to show that this institution is a place where both adults and children express their emotions, and work on their own emotions and those of others. Although separate from the classroom, the canteen is thus an integral part of school life: it actively contributes to the broader process of emotional socialization, by teaching children which emotions are acceptable to express in a group setting and which should be restrained
Conserved mechanical hallmark guides four-way junction avoidance during plant cytokinesis
No full textInternational audienceWhen building an organ, adjacent cells coordinate to form topologically stable junctions by integrating mechanosensitive signaling pathways. Positioning the newly formed tricellular junction in walled multicellular organisms is critical, as cells cannot migrate. The cell division site must avoid existing cellular junctions to prevent unstable four-way junctions. The microtubule preprophase band (PPB) is a guideline for the plant cell’s future cell division site. Yet, mutants impaired in PPB formation hardly display defects, suggesting the presence of an alternative mechanism. Here, we report the existence of a process that guides the cell division site close to an adjacent tricellular junction. This PPB-independent mechanism depends on the phosphoinositide phosphatase SUPPRESSION OF ACTIN 9 (SAC9): in the Arabidopsis mutant sac9-3, the cell plate abnormally attaches at two equidistant positions from an adjacent tricellular junction. Numerical simulations suggest that elastic energy accumulation at the subcellular level within walls, due to their rheological response to mechanical stresses, could act as positional cues revealing the positions of tricellular junctions. Moreover, perturbation of the root mechanical homeostasis results in four-way junction formation. This provides a scenario in which cells avoid four-way junction formation during cytokinesis through discrete subcellular mechanical hallmarks
