No full textInternational audienceThe apparent near absence of carbonate minerals in Noachian and Hesperian strata [1,2], despite predictions on their abundance [3], has cast doubt on the mechanisms proposed for their formation and the nature of early Mars environments [4]. Carbonate formation can sequester CO2 from volcanic outgassing, a key driver in early climate evolution and habitability [5,6]. Understanding the role and fate of carbonates and its impact on early climate regimes requires both orbital mapping and in situ geological investigations. Mg-rich carbonates have been identified in a few locations in situ at Gusev and Jezero craters [7,8] as isolated replacements by latestage diagenetic fluids, but more recently the Curiosity rover showed the extensive presence of siderite (FeCO3) within strata of the hundreds-meters thick sulfate-bearing unit [9]. Whereas chemical sedimentation is hypothesized as the mode of formation and deposition, a clear sedimentological context is so far lacking for the upper sulfate-bearing unit and the deposition of siderite [10]. In addition, its abundance (510 wt.%) makes it a significant though not a dominant component of the sediments. Here we report on a previously unidentified unit of the Amapari Marker Band (AMB) [11,12] that is composed mostly of siderite. This siderite-rich bed occurs at the base of the main wave-rippled AMB interval which itself has a comparatively lower Fe-content [13]. Examining this type of carbonate deposit within a regional sedimentary context (Fig. 1) provides new insights on the mechanisms for carbonate formation on early Mars
Genome-Wide microRNA Expression Profiling in Human Spermatozoa and Its Relation to Sperm Quality
No full textInternational audienceBackground : Sperm samples are separated into bad and good quality samples in function of their phenotype, but this does not indicate their genetic quality. Methods: Here, we used GeneChip miRNA arrays to analyze microRNA expression in ten semen samples selected based on high-magnification morphology (score 6 vs. score 0) to identify miRNAs linked to sperm phenotype. Results: We found 86 upregulated and 21 downregulated miRNAs in good-quality sperm (score 6) compared with bad-quality sperm samples were among these upregulated miRNAs. In silico prediction algorithms predicted that miRNAs upregulated in good-quality sperm targeted 910 genes involved in key biological functions of spermatozoa, such as cell death and survival, cellular movement, molecular transport, response to stimuli, metabolism, and the regulation of oxidative stress. Genes deregulated in bad-quality sperm were involved in cell growth and proliferation. Conclusions: This study reveals that miRNA profiling may provide potential biomarkers of sperm quality

No full textInternational audienceAu travers d’une synthèse de travaux en sciences humaines et sociales portant sur les relations entre enfants et animaux, cet article met en évidence les quatre axes principaux qui ont structuré la recherche sur ce thème depuis les années 1970 : le rôle de l’animal dans le bien-être de l’enfant, la défense d’une éducation en faveur de la cause animale, l’objectivation par enquête statistique des attitudes enfantines à l’égard des animaux et les espaces d’interaction entre enfants et animaux. Il invite, ensuite, à poursuivre l’examen de cet objet en puisant dans les outils théoriques de la sociologie des socialisations. Des questionnements essentiels pour comprendre la construction du rapport aux animaux durant l’enfance demeurent encore sans réponse. Il conviendrait d’approfondir, par exemple, la réception des discours et des supports sur les animaux par les enfants, l’articulation en termes de dispositions entre une diversité d’instances de socialisation ou le rôle joué par les pairs dans un monde de l’enfance saturé par la présence animale
