Globalization and corruption
την ένταση της διαφθοράς στις ιδιωτικές επιχειρήσεις .This paper examines the existence of a correlation between
globalization and corruption. lt is checked if the countries that show a
high degree of globalization will haνe a lower corruption .as compared
with countries that are not open to the globalization procedure. The
estimation results, that use cross section data, show the existence of a
correlation between globalization and corruption. Moreoνer, the paper
shows that globa lίzation procedure is compatible with policies for
combating the corruption in the public sector. On the contrary, it is
shown that globalization could increase the corruption in the priνate
sector

In a fully competitive and internationalized environment, as the Greek environment is, where
productive investments are maintained marginally, the extensive specialization of economy primarily
in the tourism industry and secondarily in the other branches of the tertiary sector, as well
as the dwindling of the agricultural sector, make the spectre of unemployment, mainly of young
people, be more and more intensive. The explosion of demand for studies, and particularly in
regard to the level of higher education, has given a new boost to the evolution of studies and their
adaptability to the labour market. The difficulty in finding a job forms supplementary questions concerning the utility of the
expansion of the already existing educational institutes, let alone concerning the viability of entirely
new institutes and schools. Of course, the creation of all these activities gives rise to the flow of
funds towards the places of establishment of such institutes, thus contributing to their
development. However, it is to wonder whether this effort does not constitute just a simple redistribution
of the available income. It has become more and more difficult to estimate to what
degree these institutes contribute satisfactorily to the completion of their main mission, which is the
formation of competitive human resources for bucking up the productive activities of economy
Economic education in Albania and labour market challenges
The authors have analyzed the actual problems of the economic education from one side,
and the necessary steps to improve the quality of higher education and prepare a qualified labour
force. In this paper the authors research the drastic changes that the higher education in Albania
has been undergoing and suggest several methods to overcome the problems. The important
conclusion that the role of the HEI has been increasing, but the main question still remains: Are
the HEI in Albania able to prepare a qualified labour force?
The findings of the research suggest that in a changing environment defining the role of the
economic education is difficult, but evidence shows that these institutions should play a key role
in promoting and improving quality in high education, developing public understanding and
awareness and developing education policies and programmes. Central to the idea of the paper
is the fact that the economic education should be a priority of the government because it has
positive impact not only for individuals and communities but, what is more important, for nations
Salary gap between working women and men in Greece
This paper deals with the salary gap between working women and men in
Greece. Research was conducted through processing of data obtained by the
Hellenic Statistical Agency (ESYE), according to specific νariables. Conceming
age, there was found that rewards of younger employees tend to be rather
equitable, whereas the salary gap among genders widens as employees are getting
older. Conceming occupational category, the most equitable groups were found
to be "scientists & free professionals", as well as "office clerks". Finally, as regards
to educational leνel , salary inequalities haνe been witnessed among graduates of
post-secondary educational institutions, as well as among university graduates.
Other important factor likely to increase the salary gap concerns the traditional
occupational segregation (female and male professions). Despite ameliorating
measures taken by the state at the institutional level, the salary gap between
genders still remains a recalcitrant problem in Greece

A comparison of the revealed comparative advantage of value-added in higher education activities between private & public sectors in provinces of Iran
Private development of higher education has been mentioned in articles 150-151 of Iran’s
third five year economic and social plan, 2000-2004 and it has been more emphasized in the 4th
plan, 2005-2009. One important reason for such attention in privately oriented higher education
is that it is predicted to increase the ratio of educated employment to total employment during the
4th plan from approximately 11 percent to 17 percent which is not feasible without private sector
contribution.
The purpose of the present paper is to measure the so-called Revealed Comparative
Advantage (RCA) of both private as well as public higher education value added activities in 28
provinces of Iran for the most recent available data published in 2005 in order to compare the
performance and the ranking of provinces in the above activities. It is shown that Semnan, Zanjan,
Yazd, Mazandaran and the central provinces which have RCA greater than one enjoy comparative
advantage in private higher education whereas provinces such as Western Azarbaijan, Sistan &
Balouchestan, Kermanshah and Hamadan provinces experience comparative advantage in public
higher education. It is suggested these provinces should use government facilities to expand the
so-called non-public non-profitable higher education institutions and Universities in order to fulfill
the goals predicted in the Iran’s 4th economic objectives with respect to higher education

The paper examines the determinants of regional competitiveness for the Greek economy.
Regional competitiveness is defined by the European Union (EU) as «the ability of regions to
create, while being exposed to external competition, relatively high levels of income and
employment». According to the literature the factors that influence the competitiveness of a
region can be categorized as cost factors (labor cost, cost of intermediates), factors relevant to
the neoclassical growth theory (investment, technology – exogenous variable–, human capital),
factors relevant to new growth theories (technology –endogenous variable–), factors relevant to
economic geography and the new international trade theories (agglomeration effects,
urbanization, transport costs, economies of scale) and factors relevant to knowledge (number of
researchers, infrastructure for Research and Development (R&D), R&D expenditure, patents,
innovation activity). Although, Greece has some of the least developed regions of the EU there is
no recent empirical study examining the determinants of development of Greek regions. This
paper examines the importance of each of the above-described factors on the competitiveness
of the thirteen regions of the Greek economy for the period 1990-2002 using an econometric
model. Results suggest that the factors that influence regional competitiveness in Greece are the
regional infrastructure, the production environment including spillover effects, the knowledge
capital and the ability for innovative activity
