The educational changes in the European Union are being institutionally implemented during the 90’s. They were initiated by the White Bibles (books) of the European Commission and took their final form in Bologna and the relevant subsequent meetings. The necessity of the reforms stems from the new developments in economy and technology and the resulting needs of reform of the global European era. Simultaneously, and in the framework of these general changes, efficacy and efficiency were gradually generally recognized as the sole criteria of evaluation of, practically, every aspect of social action. In this line of thought, education is to be evaluated mainly in terms of its efficiency and its capacity to satisfy the demands of the market-based economy. Nevertheless, this one-sided view of education, not only undermines the function of public educational institutions, but marginalizes the possibility of viewing education as a social and public good that should be provided to all members of society. Moreover, the blind fidelity to a close connection between shortterm needs of the economy and education, could, in long-term, undermine this very notion of economic efficiency that seems to actually regulate developments in the educational sector

According to the current trend, tourism education and training in Greece is developing rapidly. It is provided by the public and the private sector through a line of ministries, legal entities and other institutions. The involvement of so many institutions providing tourism education at all levels of education and for a wide spectrum of tourism related professions frequently causes confusion. The quality of the offered services in tourism is connected directly with the educational characteristics of those involved in the wider tourism sector. In a tourism developed market like Greece, with a variety of infrastructures and services, a «Comprehensive System of Tourism Education and Training» should be created. This system should be composed from different levels of education, which communicate, cooperate and compete with each other, aiming to produce an educated and trained tourism personnel. The aim of this study is to «map» tourism education and training in Greece, to evaluate the current system and promote tourism education as a vehicle of viable economic and tourism growth

The contribution of human capital is well recognized in organization’s and society’s prosperity. Thus, the competitiveness of global economies is dependable not only on financial issues and assets but also on organisation’s and more particularly on employees’ level of knowledge and expertise. This paper presents literature on the effect that the application of educational programs and the full use of academic knowledge on managerial issues could have towards the employees’ efficiency and economy’s improvement. Although there is good knowledge and extensive writings on the subject matter of human capital, however, a few research questions still remain unanswered. What is really human capital? What are the constructs of the term (i.e., human capital)? How is it possible a country to increase the levels of its human capital in order to become more prosperous and competitive in the global arena (e.g., via the use of educational programs)? What writings in the international environment on the matter of human capital have already offered? Review and critical analysis of academic and managerial writings will be reviewed. The role of this paper is to explore the future trends of human capital and their contribution to economy based on previous writings coming from the international environment

The purpose of the present paper is to investigate the role of educated employment contribution in economic development of countries around the world. We have used the highly educated employment as an independent variable and macroeconomic variables such as real economic growth, exports revenue, inflation, corruption, life expectancy, tourism revenues, and access to internet as dependent variables in a regression model analyzing the data for 70 countries for the early years of the new millennium. Our empirical results support the positive impact of educated employment contribution on macroeconomic development indexes. Therefore the more and efficient contribution of educated employment and consequently development of the so-called knowledge-based economy in countries around the world with an emphasis on developing countries is suggested

Mainstream accounting is heaνily influenced by the hypothetico - deductiνe model of research which is based on restrictiνe epistemological assumptions and produces knowledge used mainly for control and administration. This paper reports on the features of two altematiνe approaches to the traditional empirical research methodology - the interpretiνe and the critical - which could in social science, and accounting in particular, contribute to the process of mediating social conflict by proνiding the policy maker with useful alternatiνe theories
