News Coverage of the COVID-19 Outbreak: Thematic Analysis of a Portuguese Quality Newspaper
News coverage can play a vital role during public health crises, raising awareness about potential risks, informing about response efforts, and encouraging preventive behaviors. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the precariousness of journalists while introducing new challenges in their work. This article presents the results of a thematic analysis of 612 news articles about the initial stages of the COVID-19 outbreak in Portugal, published in a Portuguese quality newspaper from January to March 2020. Results show the relevance of geographical and cultural proximity as news values in international coverage. While the quantification of cases and deaths was a prominent theme in international and domestic coverage, specific cases of infection were frequent in domestic news, while general epidemiological indicators were more often the main theme in international coverage. News about events in Portugal was also more focused on specific containment and mitigation measures, while international coverage found states of emergency and lockdowns more newsworthy. As for news sources, there was a clear dependence on public officials and press releases from Direção-Geral de Saúde as information sources. The experiences and opinions of people speaking as individuals and not on behalf of organizations were much less frequent.
The Legacy of Collective Memory in Digital Culture: Digitisation, Cultural Mapping and Co-Creation
Amidst the digital transition, where digital heritage comes to meet the need for preserving and managing cultural information in an era of accelerated and unregulated production, cultural mapping emerges as an aggregating and multidisciplinary approach that calls for participation. In this context, design stands out as a mediator between multiple disciplines, becoming less centred on the materialisation of objects as a purpose, favouring the implementation of co-creation processes and the activation of socio-technical systems connecting people, contexts and technology. Within this background, we highlight the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage, which has been institutionally held by museums, libraries and archives, responsible for collecting, preserving and making it available to the community. This article highlights the impact of the digitisation of culture and the open access policies in memory institutions regarding managing collections and fruition experiences through technology inside and outside the institutions. It also presents participatory methodologies with communities taking an active role in the documentation and safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage, and also highlighting some relevant initiatives, particularly developed in Portugal.
This article aims to demonstrate how research in communication design can contribute to disseminating community practices in economically disadvantaged contexts, such as in social housing neighbourhoods. This study stems from the ECHO research project, where the main mission is to understand and document two self-initiated community practices in the social housing neighbourhood of Balteiro, in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal, to disseminate them and foster their replication in similar social contexts. It begins with a literature review on the role of design on behalf of communities, focusing, in particular, on the concepts of social design and universal design, which substantiate the relevance and pertinence of the issue under study. Then, it describes the case study of Balteiro. It presents the methodologies adopted in this research, namely the interviews conducted to learn about the history of the two community practices. This provided the basis for developing a preliminary study for an online platform and a series of documentary films. This study proved the importance of involving designers in this dissemination process through multidisciplinary teams. The research work in the field should be close to the community, the institutions and the different social actors involved to understand the complexity of the study context and define how design should operate. The empirical experience from this study has shown that work in the social area should be developed locally, focused on small communities or informal organisations, and aware that results are achieved slowly and gradually
Digital Disconnection and Portuguese Youth: Motivations, Strategies, and Well-Being Outcomes
As most individuals become digital media users, many struggle to find balance in such use. This study adds to emergent research on how digital disconnection experiences reflect on well-being (Nguyen et al., 2021; Radtke et al., 2022; Vanden Abeele, 2021) by focusing on motivations and strategies to disconnect from digital media, as well as on outcomes for well-being. We set out to understand teenagers who have voluntarily chosen to disconnect in the post-lockdown period in 2021. Our qualitative study included 20 participants from Portugal between 15 and 18 years old. Among those who consciously chose to disconnect from digital media, motivations arose from realizing that digital media was not bringing enough benefits for the amount of time that they took from users. Specific forms of digital media stood out as particularly problematic for young people, especially social media, but also videogames and pornography. This realization seems to be strongly influenced by the media and is evident in the vocabulary and associations used by our respondents. Social pressure is felt both as causing anxiety when they are connected and when they are disconnected through fear of missing out. However, the group provides support when they engage in a progressive disconnection together. Radical disconnection is rare, especially during the pandemic, and can appear as a solution to a dramatic problem in young people’s lives, but it can also be reverted. More often, participants attempted to self-regulate their use of digital when they acknowledged the advantages of those services as well as their drawbacks. This is not a linear process but rather filled with attempts and reversals as unexpected feelings such as boredom arise. When young people grow different leisure and social habits, they experience positive outcomes of disconnecting from the digital.À medida que a maioria dos indivíduos se torna utilizador dos média digitais, muitos lutam para encontrar um equilíbrio nesse uso.
Meeting the Challenges of Designing Multimodal Texts to Promote Multiliteracies Pedagogy
This article aims to add to the understanding of the challenges involved in designing digital texts to promote multiliteracies pedagogy. A multiliteracies approach calls for multimodal meaning-making and cultural diversity to be integrated into new school curriculum content, and accordingly, we analyse an interactive children’s story app, named Mobeybou in Brazil. The research question addressed was: what can we learn about the design of multimodal texts aimed at promoting intercultural learning from the design of this story app? The app incorporates tangible and digital storytelling materials to promote intercultural skills among young children, focusing specifically on Brazil. Mobeybou in Brazil was studied to characterize the design of its multimodal representations of meaning, using categories from the grammar of storytelling and multimodal meaning-making, particularly those concerned with representing the experiential diversity and personal positioning of the app users. The findings provide evidence of the complexity involved in designing multimodal texts to meet the challenges of promoting multiliteracies pedagogy, highlighting the urgent need to narrow the interface between research undertaken in education, semiotics, and digital media design. The article concludes by identifying the study’s limitations and some future developments
Audience-Foyer: Dialogue and Public Formation with Dramatic Reading in Performing Arts
The object of this article, whose research adopts a qualitative approach, takes an interdisciplinary path and has an applied nature, is the potential formation of theatre audiences seeking to turn them into virtually lasting public through artistic and communication practices in the field of performing arts called "audience-foyer" and "dramatic reading". At the theoretical and methodological levels, with descriptive and interpretative purposes, it draws from the model of studies of communication as dialogue, typical of the Latin American thinking in communication, from a public relations perspective, in which the practice of conversation and commentary, between the logic of organisational communication and the affection of art, emerges for the production of the social bond between artists and audience/public. This case study is about Teatro Mosaico (Brazil), in the staging of two dramatic texts: o Prólogo (Prologue), by director Sandro Lucose (2005), and A Caravana da Ilusão (The Illusion’s Caravan), by director Alcione Araújo (2000), where comedy and drama, in the same play, made the paths of a theatre company bifurcate.O objeto deste artigo, em pesquisa de abordagem qualitativa, trajeto interdisciplinar e de natureza aplicada, é a formação de plateia de teatro, em sua eventualidade, e a busca pela sua transformação em público, virtualmente duradouro, através de práticas artísticas e comunicacionais designadas no campo das artes cênicas de “plateia-foyer” e “leitura dramatizada”.
This article seeks to debate the construction of queer narratives in alternative forms of language, such as comics, by compiling relevant literature within the theoretical scopes of gender studies, art history and comics. Autobiographical comics offer countless possibilities for reflection because they incorporate visual elements into the narrative construction. When it comes to an autobiographical illustration, readers have a glimpse of how the artist views themselves in their memories and what they propose to expose. To explore the potential for interpreting and analysing queer autobiographical comics, this discussion centres on the graphic novel Monstrans: Experimentando Horrormônios (Monstrans: Experimenting with Horrormones) by Lino Arruda (2021). This work features deformed watercolour lines that construct the narrative of the author’s memories in his journey to understanding his gender identity. The intention is to reflect on the theme of monstrosity present in this work and how it can be a stylistic resource and a means of critiquing the self-representation of dissident bodies, focussing specifically on the artist’s relationship with the mirror, a recurring element in other transvestite/trans comics also mentioned in this article
On the Phenomenology of War and Peace: Studying the Ukrainian "Event"
The current studies of the event and the phenomenon of the war (and of the peace) reflect the ontological and –ensuing- temporal problems of the IR theorising, stemming from the IR field’s purely intersubjective nature, from its lack of the anchor of self-standing objectivity in contrast to the positive and social sciences. As such, the theory-based studies in the field become genetic processes, altering the immediate, pre-theoretical, intersubjective givenness of the IR phenomena and events within their narratives, in accordance to their preceding constructs. Yet, the phenomenology, with the intervention of the phenomenological ontology where it relapses itself into theorising, offers notions and tools for a pre-theoretical access to and description of the intersubjective immediacy of them. In order to outline such a study, this paper examines the event of the Ukrainian War and through it, the phenomena of the war and the peace. It attempts to describe its pre-theoretical, intersubjective immediacy in its synthetic unity in ontological and temporal terms. This attempt brings forth a descriptive and temporally progressive ground of givenness composed of the referentiality to the interstate intersubjectivity, to the “given” interactional forms of the involved actors, which form the synthetic unity of the event (the Ukrainian War and preceding/ upcoming state of Peace) and of the related phenomena (war and peace).
This article focuses on Clarice Lispector’s short stories and the author’s relationship to animals. The study is particularly concerned with the incorporation of non-human subjects into Lispectorean literature and the mechanisms through which the author suggests an awareness of borders between human and non-human.
