Perspectivas Emergentes: Um Panorama Sobre Mídias Alternativas Digitais e Pessoas Migrantes e/ou Racializadas em Portugal

    No full text
Alternative digital media form part of an effervescent movement to create media organisations, offering an important counterpart to the tendency to concentrate information production within a few institutional conglomerates. In Portugal, while these media outlets have gained prominence in academia, there are still few studies addressing the issue from the perspective of migrants and/or racialised people. In order to address this gap and provide an in-depth overview of the digital alternative media ecosystem in Portugal concerning these social groups, this article presents discussions informed by analyses based on a mapping of digital alternative media related to migration and/or racialised people. Various aspects are examined, such as the relationship between their foundation and the historical and social contexts in Portugal over the last few decades, the challenges of operating with small teams, and the problems associated with adopting different funding strategies. Thus, this analysis contributes to a critical discussion of pressing issues that shape the debate on the role and significance of the participation of this underrepresented group of the population in the media in Portugal. The goal is to foster a more inclusive, diverse and representative media ecosystem that reflects the country's social and cultural diversity. It offers a critical examination of the role and significance of involving this segment of the population in the media in Portugal, aiming to promote a media ecosystem that is more inclusive, diverse, and representative of the country's social and cultural diversity

    No full text
The rapid adoption of collaboration technologies over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, combined with the advancement, growth, and proliferation of metaverse technology capabilities, has created a heightened awareness and comfort with the use of advanced collaboration technologies for online and distance education. This paper presents an exploratory study of how metaverse technologies can be adopted for the teaching and learning of project management concepts and skills specifically, as metaverses have been identified as a legitimate tool for the support of virtual projects. As a part of this work, a task was designed and adopted in an undergraduate project management course. Study results related to the teaching and learning of project management as well as student perceptions of metaverse technology adoption show that students were able to work together in a metaverse environment and collaborate with one another to achieve group consensus on a task. Ultimately, the findings from this case can guide future adoptions of metaverse technologies both in and out of the classroom

Spend analytics in Norwegian public procurement: adoption status and influencing factors

    No full text
Public procurement is an essential government function representing a substantial part of a nation’s economy. How decisions are made in public procurement influences nations' economic health and citizens' daily lives. In this study, we employ the technology–organization–environment (TOE) framework to investigate public procurement officials' adoption of spend analytics in Norway. Based on an analysis of survey data from 529 Norwegian procurement entities collected by the Norwegian Agency for Public and Financial Management, we find that 61% do not utilize spend analytics, with adoption rates varying across different types of entities. A correlation analysis indicates that procurement analysis competencies are significantly associated with higher adoption rates, highlighting the critical role of analytical skills. Organizational factors such as procurement volume and a centralized purchasing unit are positively linked to the use of spend analytics. Environmental factors offer a contrasting picture: while specific factors seem to drive spending analytics adoption, a strong orientation towards sustainability and competency challenges may hinder it. These findings encourage a systemic look at how the public procurement system could be more data-driven

Rigid pavement materials with draining concrete, after construction, undergo a degradation process under the action of traffic and weather conditions. This process, which occurs during the life of the floor, can be slower if it is well constructed and maintained. Thus, it is essential that the mechanical characterization of the concrete is suitable for its application. Thus, workability and density tests must be carried out in relation to fresh concrete. In the case of hardened concrete, these are compressive and flexural strength tests, permeability tests and wear resistance tests. Pervious concrete can be a successful safety solution for heavy rains and increasingly frequent floods. This study focused on obtaining an optimized pervious concrete, within the scope of international standards, through the analysis of concrete made with the same W/C ratios and vibration times and different percentages of recycled aggregate. The results show the strong influence of both parameters on porosity and permeability distribution and the negative influence of higher porosities on strength. Concrete with a W/C ratio of 0.30 and a vibration time of 40 seconds and 20% recycled aggregate was selected for its superior mechanical performance.

Breaking Boundaries in Malaria Research: Design of a Genetic Tool for High-Throughput Gametocidal Drug Screening

    No full text
Malaria, a devastating illness remains a global health concern with an estimated 249 million malaria cases in 85 malaria-endemic countries around the world. Malaria elimination, challenged by drug resistance, requires strategic interventions that could be the implementation of antimalarials with selective actions on the different phases of the parasite life cycle. Of particular relevance is gametocytocidal drugs that could be used to prevent transmission of malaria infection to the mosquito. Finding drugs with gametocidal effect thus are limited by the technical challenges of large-scale production and quantification of parasite transmission stage, gametocytes. To surmount these obstacles, our study endeavors to design a genetic engineering strategy (a vector construct) to further deliver nucleic acid information through transfections-based systems in the form of a plasmid into Plasmodium falciparum. This approach will enable us to engineer a transgenic parasite line for multi-stage drug screening, targeting the symptomatic intra-erythrocyte parasite stage and gametocytes. Genetic engineering tools such as selected linked integration system and attB-attP site-specific recombination will be used in our vector construct aiming the genetic integration process into the P. falciparum genome. These systems will accommodate strategies for easy and accurate stage-specific quantification such as RFP-luciferase fusion cloned downstream stage-specific promoters leading to reporter products with optical outputs and for efficient production of gametocytes at large scale using a riboswitch-based inducible gene expression system. Such technology is of major need and will pave the way for scaling up the capacity for high-throughput drug screening, leading to improved strategies to find drugs capable of blocking malaria transmission

The growing visibility of religion in the workplace has been the source of tension and conflict in Europe and has garnered some media attention, particularly when courts are called in to solve disputes. In most cases, the issue is not so much direct discrimination against workers due to their religion, but instead indirect discrimination arising from the application of “neutral” rules to all workers, which make it particularly difficult for individuals belonging to religious minorities to reconcile their professional and religious obligations. In this article, we map out leading cases from international and domestic courts, and discuss the significance of those rulings
