A tradução literária como comunicação entre culturas. Intercâmbio entre a Chéquia e o México

    No full text
This article aims to present the historiographical research of translations of Czech literature into Spanish published in Mexico, i.e., the literary translation from a minority language (Czech) into a majority language (Spanish) as part of the communication between two (apparently at first sight) distant cultures. In the first part, theoretical bases and methods used for the historiographical study of literary translations based on bibliographical research and paratextual analysis are explained. The results are presented in two sections, first, in the form of fragments of interviews with the translators of the books that form part of our corpus. This testimonial source is used for the subsequent reflection on the sociology of literary translation production in Mexico. The second part of the results presents a comparative overview, both quantitative and qualitative, of Czech-Mexican and Mexican-Czech translations published up to 2019. The aim is to use the data to observe the literary exchange through translations and to identify the particularities of the production of translations of Czech works in Mexico.

    No full text
This paper aims to investigate the international positioning of contemporary Portuguese children’s literature by characterizing the publishing houses that have published foreign editions of Portuguese books in the last two decades. The research takes the form of a case-study, focusing on the catalogue of the prestigious publishing house Planeta Tangerina. The empirical analysis collects data related to the size of the foreign publishing houses, their association with circuits of large or small-scale production (Bourdieu 1993, 2008), the goals and mission officially shared by the publishing houses, and their catalogues. Considering the specificities of this literary subsystem, ascertaining the positioning of Portuguese children’s literature also implies investigating how it is perceived regarding the balance between the aesthetic, the didactic, and the ludic dimensions.O presente artigo tem como objetivo averiguar o posicionamento internacional da literatura infantojuvenil portuguesa contemporânea, a partir da caracterização das editoras que, nas últimas duas décadas, adquiriram direitos de tradução e publicaram obras portuguesas em outros países.

    No full text
This article explores Deleuze’s notion of Figure as it is presented in Francis Bacon – Logique de la Sensation, Cinéma 1 – L’Image-mouvement and Cinéma 2 – L’Image-temps. We begin with the following hypothesis: The Figure must be understood through a complex inner relationship between two different movements, models. On the one hand, a desire for conformity with a discernible model; on the other hand, deformation, death as a model, multiple, impersonal death, with no necessary relation to an ultimate instant, a definitive position in a temporal framework to be understood in chronological terms, but that which is concerned with a transformative, vital element, implying an iterative possibility, death’s eternal return. We are particularly interested in following the repetition of this structure in the concepts that constitute the Figure’s exoconsistency, that is, the concepts of ‘Image’, ‘Body without organs’, ‘Memory’, ‘perversion’ and ‘democracy’. I conclude by underlining the Figure’s political significance, which obliges us to reposition the question of democracy as a task, a becoming-democratic, beyond any kind of state-form that adequately realises it

    No full text
This article delves into the grammatical perspective of Joaquim Afonso Gonçalves (1781-1841), a Portuguese Lazarist. The study focuses on his metalinguistic reflections as evident in his grammatical primer, Arte China (1829), designed for teaching Chinese to Europeans in 19th-century Macao. Specifically, this research centers on the grammatical references found in the third and fourth chapters of the manual, namely Grammatica and Syntaxe. It explores Gonçalves' observations regarding Chinese word formation and parts of speech, both perceived from a contrastive perspective. The analysis reveals that Gonçalves’ proposed word formation patterns are rooted in the morphological characteristics of Chinese words. Additionally, the parts of speech used to classify the Chinese lexicon not only inherit the Greek-Latin analytical and desctiptive model but also incorporate local traditions and embrace new categories to capture unique aspects of Chinese compared to his native language. This research seeks to illuminate Gonçalves’ grammatical conception, originally intended for direct disciples but potentially challenging for contemporary readers

Guitars Made in Northern Portugal Between 1799 and 1926

    No full text
Portuguese guitars as we know them todaymodifications made to other instrumental types during the first decades of the 20th century. They are deeply connected with a music genre. What would guitars be like before the guitar? And which wore their musical context? Material evidence points to the existence, in the north of Portugal, of a wide variety of guitars, from guitarras inglesas, guitarrões, cithralias, cítaras campeiras, and, of course, Portuguese guitars. Each of them has dimensions, morphological characteristics, materials, number of strings, execution techniques and, above all, unique contexts of use. Throughout the article, it will be possible to reflect on the rise of the guitar as a national instrument, enumerate, describe and characterize the different instrumental typologies found and finally frame its manufacture in the context of European guitar playing, highlighting the most original aspects of the instruments built in the north of Portugal.

Digital Currencies – inevitable in a very near future all around the world

    No full text
Digital currencies are already booming in the modern world and will be essential, particularly in geostrategic terms or in international trade. Digital assets will essentially use two different types of technology: whether they will be centralised (like the Chinese CBDC, or the digital Pataca currently being implemented in the Macau Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China), or decentralised (like the various cryptocurrencies, already accessible in the Western world through numerous exchanges). This text focuses on the leading role of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) and cryptocurrencies (as digital currencies) in the world as a whole and the leading role of digital assets in “emerging markets”, namely in various countries whose economies and financial markets are still emerging or developing, such as in Africa. Digital assets, being a CBDC or, differently, a legally private crypto like bitcoin or ethereum, for example – just to name the most popular ones around the world today – will play a decisive role in improving some economies commonly known as “emerging markets”. These are markets that still need a lot of improvement, particularly because they are related to weaker macroeconomies, where some social and economic relations are strongly and usually linked to some lack of (traditional) money (or “fiat” currencies, such as the US dollar or the euro)

Data protection and the transformation of rights in the digital society

    No full text
This paper analyses the centrality that data protection is acquiring in the digital society as a right that, together with that of consumer protection, is expanding and occupying spaces for guaranteeing other rights that by themselves have weaker protections. This evolution also contributes to transforming the system of rights insofar as it detaches them from substantive principles and values in order to secure them from the market’s standpoint. This instrumental character to the market is especially relevant in data protection, since in addition to being a right, it is also a commodity in the framework of the data economy. The paper also highlights the challenges posed by Generative Artificial Intelligence, not only for data protection, but also for the data economy itself and the digital society, as it has the capacity to generate and propagate disinformation of a systemic nature

Is it worthwhile for Latin American countries to obtain adequate level of personal data protection from the European approach, or is it better to promote the use of contractual clauses to export such information?

    No full text
The international transfer of personal data between countries with diverse legal cultures is set to continue growing as social and economic relationships expand alongside the increasing number of internet users and the widespread adoption of information and communication technologies worldwide. This paper proposes to re-evaluate the emphasis on the “adequate level of data protection” as a strategy to ensure the minimum standards for the proper handling of personal data when exported to other countries. Instead, it suggests that standard data protection clauses might be a more effective approach to achieve this objective. Ensuring an adequate level of data protection is essential for all countries. However, this does not necessarily mean that such a level can only be attained by adhering to processes established by foreign organisations or local authorities from other nations. The absence of a formal certification of an adequate level does not imply that a country lacks the effective mechanisms to ensure proper personal data treatment. The lengthy duration and high uncertainty associated with the adequacy processes are inconvenient for entities that need to legally export personal data to other countries. Therefore, standard data protection clauses are presented as a practical and sensible tool to achieve this goal. It is highly likely that the use of these clauses will eventually replace the need to rely on the “adequate level of data protection” framework
