Playing and Mathematics: perceptions of children from a public school
The objective of this qualitative study is to explore the contribution of play and its relationship with mathematics, based on the perspectives of children in a 5th-grade class at a public school in the municipality of Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil. The research focuses on analyzing drawings and photographs created by the children, which reflect their experiences in the classroom and their connection with mathematical concepts. The information obtained through observations, drawings, photographic records, and dialogues with the participants reveals that, although the children are able to associate mathematics with play and the respective spaces, their representations of ideal mathematics classes are still rooted in traditional practices, far removed from playfulness. This gap indicates the need for a more effective integration of play and mathematics teaching, aiming to make learning more meaningful and engaging for children
Freedom! Freedom? Children's dreams and the right to housing and life
This paper was prepared in connection with the celebrations of the April 25th Carnation Revolution and the Seminar held at UMinho aimed at reflecting on democracy in relation to childhood. Written from São Paulo, Brazil, it intends to present reflections that address the weaknesses of democracy and the need for discussion in order to maintain and deepen democratic principles. Based on research carried out by the author with children in the Metropoliz squatters’ commune in Rome from 2022 to 2023, the dreams of a boy living there stand out as emblematic of the need to discuss children’s needs and their dreams when both asleep and awake. The aim is to reflect on fear as an affection, and on how children’s lives and rights are vilified daily, depending on social class, creed, race and gender.
Measuring moisture content in construction materials is extremely important both for professional practice as well as for research. However, despite the wide variety of techniques available for moisture content determination, performing in-depth, in-situ and long-term minor destructive measurements is still a great challenge. The Time-Domain Reflectometry (TDR) technique is commonly used for soil moisture measurements, but its application in construction materials is considered a relatively new method, especially for low-porosity building materials. The major challenges to its current use in hard construction materials are: (1) the difficulty of ensuring good contact between the TDR probe and the material; (2) the lack of appropriate calibration functions between the measured relative permittivity and the moisture content for building materials; (3) the absence of standardized procedures to obtain appropriate calibration curves for construction materials; and (4) the need to develop automatic tools capable of processing the data and providing the evolution of moisture content over time. This paper presents a methodology to overcome these obstacles in order to obtain successful moisture content measurements with the TDR technique. The proposed procedure was applied and tested on limestone and solid brick samples. The results obtained show that TDR is a suitable solution for monitoring moisture content on low-porosity building materials, encouraging further developments that may lead to a more widespread use of the technique.

Cellular uptake, biodistribution and protection against oxidative damage by Withania somnifera leaf extract-loaded PCL and MPEG-PCL nanoparticles
Withania somnifera (WS) or Ashwagandha is a well-known medicinal plant, cultivated in dry areas of India and Pakistan, where it represents an important resource as a widely used medicinal crop. Because of its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, its extract is used, alone or in combination with other herbal extracts, in the treatment of age-related and neurodegenerative disorders. For tapping on the important therapeutic potential of this resource for biomedicine, strategies for controlled delivery and biodistribution improvement are necessary to guarantee treatment efficacy. Pharmacological properties of WS leaf extract (WSE) are mainly attributed to the presence of withanolides. In the present study, WSE was encapsulated in nanoparticles composed of biodegradable polymers as poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) and methoxy poly-ethylene glycol poly-ε-caprolactone (MPEG-PCL) di-block copolymer. Laser doppler anemometry (LDA), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) were used to analyze their size and shape. The particle size distribution of WSE-loaded PCL and MPEG-PCL nanoparticles was measured as 214-268 and 30-62 nm, respectively, presenting in both cases a spherical shape. U251 glioma cells, representative of the most common and lethal type of intracranial tumor which is glioblastoma, were exposed to these nanoparticles, demonstrating their efficient uptake. It was showed that MPEG-PCL nanoparticles containing WSE offered better protection to U251 cells against tert-butyl hydroperoxide (tBHP)-induced oxidative damage (95.1%), compared to PCL nanoparticles with WSE (56.4%) and free WSE (39.0%). In vivo distribution of these nanoparticles was further analyzed using zebrafish embryos to validate their biocompatibility in a relevant vertebrate neurodevelopment model
In Spain, all preserved tragedies by Sophocles were not available until José Alemany Bolufer translated them and were later on published in the “Biblioteca Clásica” series (Hernando editions), in 1921. Before the nineteenth century, there is only one translation: Oedipus Tyrannus by Pedro Estala (1793). In the nineteenth century, three Sophocles’ tragedies were published in Spain: Oedipus Rex (1878), translated into Catalan language by Enric Franco; and, into Spanish language, Antigone (1883), by Antonio González Garbín, and Philoctetes (1886), by Ángel Lasso de la Vega. In Italy, three nineteenth-century translations of Sophocles’ tragedies by Pedro Montegón, preserved in a manuscript of the Royal Academy of History, will be published at the end of the 20th (1992): Oedipus Rex, Electra and Philoctetes. Finally, three new translations of Sophocles’ tragedies are still found in manuscripts from the Menéndez Pelayo Library archives, in Santander: Antigone, translated by Graciliano Afonso; Oedipus at Colonus, by Emeterio Suaña y Castellet; and Ajax, with two versions (prose and verse) by José Musso y Valiente.
In her works, Isabelle de Charrière, an 18th-century author of several literary genres and defender of women’s advocacy, reflected on her time’s customs and living conditions. Her work has been translated into different languages, but not into Spanish. Therefore, in my thesis, I have proposed the translation of part of Caliste, ou Continuation de ‘Lettres Écrites de Lausanne’ (1787). The purpose of this paper is to show the translation process carried out, the questions raised regarding the stylistic turns at sentence level, so peculiar to the Enlightenment, the dilemmas involved with certain expressions typical of a regional language and the decisions taken to solve them, accounting for the corresponding examples. Translation Assessors In and Out of Their Element
Translation assessment is an activity present in many scenarios and the diverse individuals who must deal with it partly explains the variability of such activity. Previous Translation Studies have already profiled and compared both the behaviour and the results of assessments carried out by a variety of evaluators. This paper examines the main contributions concerning this issue, and adds to the field by distinguishing between the contexts in which evaluators carry out their usual work and other less paradigmatic situations. The result is a compendium of the characteristics defining the prototypical evaluator profiles as well as presenting a warning for researchers, professionals, students and teachers on the special conditions that, depending on the circumstances, affect their evaluation and make it look as a different activity. The discussion includes complex formulas characterized by the collaboration of different groups of evaluators, as well as of those whose profile is not defined always by a single role. Therefore, the present paper may serve as an inspiration for new research investigating the profiles of evaluators to open the focus and take into account the circumstances that may affect their alleged habitual activity. Translation assessment is an activity present in many scenarios and the diverse individuals who must deal with it partly explains the variability of such activity. Qualidade Jornalística e Estabilidade Democrática em Tempos de Crise: Reflexões Empíricas de Jornais Espanhóis
In today’s social and political landscape, marked by the rise of neopopulist social players and heightened democratic uncertainty, it becomes imperative to understand the quality of journalism in post-democratic frameworks. The infodemic witnessed amidst the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the pitfalls of relying on social media as a primary information source able to facilitate the development of fundamental skills necessary for active citizenship within liberal democracies. Given these circumstances, it is essential to analyse the pivotal role of mainstream journalism in countering disinformation and fostering critical thinking among citizens, thereby elevating public interest concerns onto the societal agenda. The primary objective of this research is to assess the quality of the content produced by prominent Spanish newspapers and disseminated to the public via social media. Employing both qualitative and quantitative paradigms as a methodology within the epistemological framework that guides them, we analyse the content’s tendencies and political biases concerning rumours about the coronavirus published by leading national and regional newspapers on their Facebook profiles. The findings of this investigation indicate minimal audience engagement with the posts, prompting further discussions on the kinds of stories that capture public interest while also nurturing critical thinking skills among citizens.
Promoting transparency is seen as one of the key mechanisms for generating trust in the work of journalists and thereby strengthening democracies. The principle is that making information about media ownership, funding, and editorial decision-making criteria public enhances understanding of the less visible aspects of journalistic production, thus increasing credibility by identifying potential conflicts of interest. In recent years, technological development, particularly the internet’s growing capabilities, coupled with the crisis in journalism’s business models, which is jeopardising traditional funding models, has led to the emergence of entrepreneurial journalistic projects that claim to be alternative and independent. These projects seek to distinguish themselves from mainstream journalism through their structure, funding and ownership models, and they find a strategy for promoting transparency that sets them apart from traditional media. This article aims to identify and analyse the transparency promotion practices of these journalistic projects, relating them to a strategy of affirmation in the news market
