Does alleviating poverty increase cognitive performance? Short and long term evidence from a randomized controlled trial
Recent findings suggest that poverty has a deteriorating effect on cognitive functioning which can reinforce existing social inequalities. In this registered report, we will investigate the impact of a poverty alleviation program on cognitive performance. We will analyze data from a randomized controlled trial conducted on low-income, high-risk individuals in Liberia where a random half of the participants (n=251) received a $200 lump-sum unconditional cash transfer - equivalent approx. to 300% of their monthly income while the other half (n= 222) did not. Several measures of executive functioning were administered 2 and 5 weeks, 12 and 13 months after the cash distributions. Extending prior literature, we will use an experimental setting to test both the short-term and the long-term impact of the treatment on cognitive performance and also explore the role of potential mechanisms driving the effect
Tinnitus as a network problem – plasticity in anatomical and functional connectivity
Tinnitus is the phantom perception of sound when there is no external auditory input. This sound is mostly perceived as a whistling, buzzing or hissing in the ear. Chronic tinnitus – the permanent phantom perception – currently affects 10-20% of the population but no reliable treatment has been found so far. One of the peripheral causes for tinnitus is hearing loss due to loud noise exposure or age-related degeneration, leading to plastic changes in auditory and non-auditory brain regions. SEISMIC PERFORMANCE OF RC FRAME MULTI STOREY BUILDING WITH AND WITHOUT INFILL WALL
Many low-rise and medium rise framed buildings have been constructed in the recent past, without proper attention paid in their design for wind or earthquake loads. This serious shortcoming in structural design and detailing has been exposed by failure that has occurred in the recent earthquakes in various parts of the country. It is the failure of the column during an earthquake which is more severe than the failure of the slabs or beams. The failure of the columns can lead to collapse of the stores one over the other. The columns can fail either in shear or in bending. Shear failure occurs mainly because the column sizes provided are in adequate to resist the seismic loads and inadequate lateral ties. Bending (flexural) failure occur because of steel bars provided vertically in the columns, particularly near the beam-column joints or column-foundation junctions, and may also occur due to poor quality of concrete. In this dissertation work a parametric study is performed on two existing multistoried RC buildings with soft storey, located in seismic zone III. The buildings are used for the purpose of shopping and hostel building. The study is carried out on the buildings with the help of different mathematical model by using different retrofitting techniques for improving seismic performance of the building with soft storey. Analysis and design is carried out on all mathematical 3D models using the software Etabs. Comparison of this models are presented in terms displacement, storey drift , axial force , bending moment, area of steel and quantity and cost for steel and concrete is calculated
DESIGNING EFFICIENT SIGNAL TO AVOID TRAFFIC CONGESTION WITH DELAY ANALYSIS OF VEHICLES ON EXISTING ROAD INTERSECTIONS
The study is to assess the effect of increasing traffic Burdon on present road structures and Traffic management system. For study purpose, Amravati-Paratwada urban Highway passing through Panchvati Area of Amravati, Maharashtra is selected with corridor length of 3.9kms. This study includes collection of data from site by means of manual observations, previously available survey/video/photo records. Data collected is analysed by suitable delay models which suits heterogeneous traffic conditions in spite of choosing traditional models for Delay analysis. Collected data in terms of volume count of a peak hour traffic is then converted into passenger car unit factors. The study uses VISSIM simulation software model to compare delays in forms personal delays, overall delays at each individual intersection in the corridor by means of nodal analysis. Along with delays, queue lengths forming has also been studied under this study. signalized intersection's signal cycle redesigning and phase redesigning is suggested after analysis of present and suggested scenario to cope up with the vehicular delays and congestion problem in the selected corridor
