International audienceThe article focuses on the conditions of social innovation in nonprofit performing arts organizations during the Covid-19 crisis. We use the MICE model (Management, Initiatives, Competencies, and Work Environment) to analyze 102 interviews collected by the Agency for Performing Arts in the Rhône-Alpes region, as well as 12 semi-directive interviews. We discuss the observed new work practices as social innovations and identify the conditions for social innovation in associations.L’article s’intéresse aux conditions de l’innovation sociale dans les associations du spectacle vivant face à la crise du Covid-19.
Exploring the Interplay Between Humans and Sports Equipment in the Quest for Performance
International audienceThe processes of appropriation of tools, machines, and other kinds of equipment by human beings are often linked to the notions of transparency and incorporation. Sport situations provide appropriate conditions for exploring the interplay between humans and material equipment when users are engaged in a quest for performance. In the present opinion, we discuss the notions of transparency of sports equipment used by athletes, showing that the association between appropriation and transparency is not straightforward. Furthermore, we highlight distinctions between types of sports equipment based on the latter’s behavior in relation to the athlete’s activity. This leads us to suggest three directions of research that should develop a better understanding of the interplay between humans and sports equipment in particular, and more generally the interplay between humans engaged in a quest for performance and their material artefacts
Effect of Bryophyllum pinnatum Leaf Extract Consumption on Lipid Concentrations and Cardiovascular Risk Indices in Apparently Healthy Individuals
International audienceBryophyllum pinnatum has been consumed locally for various ailments without proper documentation of It’s effect on Lipid concentrations and cardiovascular risk indices in humans. This study sought to determine the effect of Bryophyllum pinnatum leaf extract consumption on lipid concentrations and cardiovascular risk indices in apparently healthy individuals by estimating Total cholesterol, Triglycerides, High Density Lipoprotein (HDL), Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL), Atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP), Castelli Risk Index I and II, Total protein and Albumin in 15 apparently healthy individuals after consumption of 1.32g/180ml of Bryophyllum pinnatum leaf extract for 14 days. Samples taken before the commencement of the study served as control samples, while samples collected on the 1st, 7th and 14thday after consumption of 1.32g/180ml of Bryophyllum pinnatum leaf extract served as test samples. Total Cholesterol, Triglycerides, High Density Lipoprotein were estimated using Colorimetric methods. Total protein was estimated using Biuret method while Albumin was estimated using Bromocresol green method. The results showed that levels of LDL(1.04±0.44mmol/l), AIP(-0.34±0.09), Castelli index I (2.16±0.53) and Castelli index II(0.94±0.47) were significantly reduced (p<0.05) after 7 days of consumption when compared to control LDL(2.65±0.18mmol/l),AIP(-0.15±0.18), Castelli index I (3.84±0.32) and Castelli index II(2.44±0.33).Further comparism of levels of LDL(2.22±0.74mmol/l),AIP((-0.15±0.18), Castellic index I ((3.74±1.80) and Castellic index II (2.42±0.98) after 14 days of consumption with levels after 7 days LDL(1.04±0.44mmol/l), AIP(-0.34±0.09), Castelli index I (2.16±0.53) and Castelli index II(0.94±0.47) showed significant increase (p< 0.05). Results obtained suggest that short term consumption of Bryophyllum pinnatum leaf extract would reduce cardiovascular risk indices in humans but continuous long term use can predispose consumers to increased risk of developing cardiovascular pathological consequences

International audienceThe status of the Scarabaeus (Scarabaeus) species belonging to the gangeticus group is studied. Ateuchus (Heliocantharus) profanus Boheman, 1857, Scarabaeus nepos Fairmaire, 1884, and Scarabaeus laevigatus Kolbe, 1887, are retained as good species and their status restored. A lectotype is designed for Scarabaeus pacatus Péringuey 1901, which is synonymized with Ateuchus (Heliocantharus) profanus Boheman, 1857. The holotype by monotypy of Ateuchus gangeticus Castelnau, 1840, est identifié. A lectotype is designed for Ateuchus isidis Castelnau, 1840. To fix the taxonomy, a neotype is designed for Ateuchus goryi Castelnau, 1840, for which the type is considered lost. Scarabaeus pseudogangeticus Moretto n. sp., Scarabaeus osiridis Moretto n. sp., Scarabaeus montreuili Moretto n. sp. and et Scarabaeus montreuili meridionalis Moretto n. ssp. are described. The morphological characters used to separate the species are specified, described and illustrated. An identification key and distribution maps are produced. The holotype by monotypy of Ateuchus jalof Castelnau, 1840, is identified; this species is removed from the S. gangeticus species group and transferred in S. transcaspicus species group.
John Greyson, "Parma Violets" (1989), Brenda Longfellow, Scott MacKenzie et Thomas Waugh (dir.), The perils of pedagogy. The works of John Greyson, Montréal, McGill-Queen's University Press, 2013.The Perils of Pedagogy (2013)The following fake video script was written as a contribution to a particular debate among gay male artists that reached a head (so to speak) with an exhibition called Against Nature sponsored by the Los Angles artist space LACE in January 1988 (an earlier version of this script constituted my catalogue essay). The curatorial concept was inspired by Joris Karl Huysmans’s Against Nature, a satirical nineteenth-century French novel that celebrated artifice and dandyism. With tongue in cheek, it recorded the self-imposed aesthetic exile of Des Essientes, an aesthete languishing from an (unnamed) disease that suspiciously resembled ennui.
Birth and Decline of Magma Oceans in Planetesimals: 1. Experimental Study of Erosion and Deposition of Particles in an Internally Heated Convecting Fluid
International audienceThis paper is the first of two companion papers presenting a theoretical and experimental studyof the evolution of crystallizing magma oceans in planetesimals. We aim to understand the behavior of crystalsformed in a convective magma ocean, and the implications of crystal segregation for the thermal and structuralevolution of the convective system. In particular, we wish to constrain the possibility to form and preservecumulates and/or flotation crusts by sedimentation or flotation of crystals respectively. We use lab-scaleanalog experiments to study the stability and the erosion of a floating lid composed of plastics beads lyingover a convective viscous fluid volumetrically heated by microwave absorption. We propose a law for erosionand re-entrainment that depends only on two dimensionless numbers that govern these phenomena: (a) theRayleigh-Roberts number, characterizing the vigor of convection and (b) the Shields number, that encompassesthe physics of the flow-particle interaction. We further consider the formation of a cumulate at the base ofthe convective layer by sedimentation of beads that are denser than the fluid. We find that particle depositionoccurs at a velocity that scales with the Stokes velocity, a result consistent with previous experimental studies. We build up a model that describes the transient evolution of the convective system's thermal state and thefraction of particles that segregated from the flow or that remain in suspension
