    No full text
International audienceThis article draws on approaches in the anthropology of things and the anthropology of capitalism. It brings to light fragments of the supply chains of pesticides in one of the most productive agricultural regions in Cambodia. Based on an ethnographic study conducted from November 2021 to December 2022 with farmers, petty retailers and marketing agents enrolled in the pesticides sector, this article shows how a study of local interactions between pesticides and these actors brings out multi-level data, ranging from the local marketing strategies to transnational manufacturing of pesticides. It highlights various stages that are taking place between small-scale farmers and industrial players to redefine tailor-made pesticides and fuel the local market

Recueil de projets d'expertise internationale à INRAE. Tome 2

    No full text

    No full text

TaeC: A manually annotated text dataset for trait and phenotype extraction and entity linking in wheat breeding literature

    No full text
International audienceWheat varieties show a large diversity of traits and phenotypes. Linking them to genetic variability is essential for shorter and more efficient wheat breeding programs. A growing number of plant molecular information networks provide interlinked interoperable data to support the discovery of gene-phenotype interactions. A large body of scientific literature and observational data obtained in-field and under controlled conditions document wheat breeding experiments. The cross-referencing of this complementary information is essential. Text from databases and scientific publications has been identified early on as a relevant source of information. However, the wide variety of terms used to refer to traits and phenotype values makes it difficult to find and cross-reference the textual information, e.g. simple dictionary lookup methods miss relevant terms. Corpora with manually annotated examples are thus needed to evaluate and train textual information extraction methods. While several corpora contain annotations of human and animal phenotypes, no corpus is available for plant traits. This hinders the evaluation of text mining-based crop knowledge graphs (e.g. AgroLD, KnetMiner, WheatIS-FAIDARE) and limits the ability to train machine learning methods and improve the quality of information. The Triticum aestivum trait Corpus is a new gold standard for traits and phenotypes of wheat. It consists of 528 PubMed references that are fully annotated by trait, phenotype, and species. We address the interoperability challenge of crossing sparse assay data and publications by using the Wheat Trait and Phenotype Ontology to normalize trait mentions and the species taxonomy of the National Center for Biotechnology Information to normalize species. The paper describes the construction of the corpus. A study of the performance of state-of-the-art language models for both named entity recognition and linking tasks trained on the corpus shows that it is suitable for training and evaluation. This corpus is currently the most comprehensive manually annotated corpus for natural language processing studies on crop phenotype information from the literature

Shade Tree Species Matter: Sustainable Cocoa-Agroforestry Management

    No full text
International audienceShade trees are important components of cocoa-agroforestry systems because they influence yields, soil fertility and the occurrence of pests and diseases and may support adaptation to climate change. Based on a review of the existing literature and on primary data from field experiments, this chapter reports on the species-specific effects of shade trees in relation to the management of insect pests, black pod diseases and their impacts on cocoa yield. Shade tree species in cocoa systems impact soil available phosphorus differently and shade tree species such as Spanish cedar (Cedrela odorata), limba (Terminalia superba) and mahogany (Khaya ivorensis ) increase cocoa yield compared with cocoa systems without shade trees. The architecture of shade tree species may influence below-canopy temperatures and relative humidity, which potentially affect pests such as mirids and black pod disease infections and ultimately cocoa yield. As farmers have local knowledge of and preferences for certain shade tree species, strengthening the combination of scientific and local knowledge can prove a powerful tool for the improved management of shade tree species, as well as cocoa pests and diseases. © The Author(s) 2024.

Propelled and immersed in the debates surrounding the legislation of coastline retreat initiated by the government in 2018 at the same time as the start of our research project, we saw how this regulatory emulation represented a turning point in the way we apprehended future coastal development. Previously regarded as a mere directive, the "spatial recomposition" ordinance now legally enshrines the strategic relocation of populations and economic activities to the retro-coastal zone within urban planning tools. On the scale of the Occitanie region, this prescription in itself raises questions about the durability of the urban production model for the coastal area, as this paradigm shift actually shatters the foundations of a model which, sixty years ago, changed the face of this regional territory, and which today is just as structuring and influential when we look at its trajectory. Built on a logic of growth, the great interministerial project, the 1963 "Racine" mission, placed the Occitan coastal area within a regime of capitalist urban growth, which was able to maintain, renew and anchor itself in a context of neo-liberalization of urban policies. Stemming from a centralized system, the coastal development model has given rise to a process of accumulation characterized by a return system that has found a new field of expansion in decentralization. The many processes associated with this model (political, economic, social and spatial) overlap with the major contemporary urban dynamics of coastal areas: the extension of the "Racine" mission through the affirmation and revaluation of this political and economic heritage, the political desire to upgrade the real estate stock of the 1960s, a dynamic real estate market seized by property development, and a coastal area seized by landlord trends implemented by a group of private individuals. These phenomena reveal an urban market for the coastline, making it part of a form of marketization in the making of the city. This thesis therefore examines the place and role of political and economic regimes in the face of the desire for change suggested by legislation for the natural restoration of coastal areas. It implements measures, on the scale of root resorts and particularly that of Saint-Cyprien, by immersion as a project manager and researcher, and through a qualitative investigation based on a varied collection of field data, intense archival work, the construction and production of original cartographic databases with a spatialization of the making of the coastal city mobilizing the products of residential and real estate taxation, and an unprecedented geohistory ; which provide a portrait of the different political-economic regulatory regimes that have transformed and recomposed the Occitan coastal space and its trajectory. An approach at the crossroads of social, radical, and economic geographies provides an original interpretation grid for exploring this field. The rise of coastal urban policies on political agendas can be seen in the construction, structuring and maintenance of a pro-growth coastal urban regime, underpinned by policies of reterritorialization through the commodification of coastal space. Our four-year immersion in the political arenas involved in the production of public policy for the future development of the coastline enabled us to be at the heart of the forces of inertia and the ways of circumventing that operate in the face of the privatization of the "coastal space" resource.

Erosion vs. accretion of sandy beaches: their impacts on nursery areas of coral reef fish

    No full text
International audienceSandy beaches have experienced substantial human modifications worldwide for centuries. Yet, sandy beaches are known as nursery areas for coral reef fishes. Due to global and local stressors, the degradation of nurseries such as the sandy beaches may have wide reaching consequences for the resilience of reef fishes. In our study, the impact of erosion vs. accretion phenomena was highlighted on coral reef fish community in Guadeloupe in comparing the abundance and diversity of juvenile fish between two nearby beach sites (one that undergoes accretion and the other one that undergoes erosion since the 1950s). The main result showed that a significant retreat of sandy beach along the entire coastline, by bringing out an old reef, could create new habitats, favorable to the settlement of fish juveniles. This result is surprising when considering that erosion negatively affects coral reefs through the sedimentation, deterioration of water quality, and loss of habitat

Combined cytogenetic and molecular methods for taxonomic verification and description of Brassica populations deriving from different origins

    No full text
International audienceAgriculture faces great challenges to overcome global warming and improve system sustainability, requiring access to novel genetic diversity. So far, wild populations and local landraces remain poorly explored. This is notably the case for the two diploid species, Brassica oleracea L. (CC, 2n=2x=18) and B. rapa L. (AA, 2n=2x=20). In order to explore the genetic diversity in both species, we have collected populations in their centre of origin, the Mediterranean basin, on a large contrasting climatic and soil gradient from northern Europe to southern sub-Saharan regions. In these areas, we also collected 14 populations belonging to five B. oleracea closely related species. Our objective was to ensure the absence of species misidentification at the seedling stage among the populations collected and to describe thereafter their origins. We combined flow cytometry, sequencing of a species-specific chloroplast genomic region, as well as cytogenetic analyses in case of unexpected results for taxonomic verification. Out of the 112 B. oleracea and 154 B. rapa populations collected, 103 and 146, respectively, presented a good germination rate and eighteen populations were misidentified. The most frequent mistake was the confusion of these diploid species with B. napus. Additionally for B. rapa, two autotetraploid populations were observed. Habitats of the collected and confirmed wild populations and landraces are described in this study. The unique plant material described here will serve to investigate the genomic regions involved in adaptation to climate and microbiota within the framework of the H2020 Prima project ‘BrasExplor’
