A survey of professional beekeepers in the French Pyrenees enabled us to observe and analyze specific beekeeping situations. These beekeepers work in the apiary without the usual beekeeping protection (veil, gloves, overall). The network of peers that is the subject of this article shares the same ambition of interacting as closely as possible with bees, for a better collaboration. Their choice is based on specific knowledge and a relational and sensitive conception of beekeeping but also on acts that prepare humans and bees to interact. These acts of preparation appear as singularities marking a professional posture and a relationship to living beings. The aim here is to study how working without an overall, by expressing a conception of bees and the relationships it is possible to maintain with them, transforms the ways of thinking and practicing beekeeping. These non-enveloped RNA viruses infect a wide range of vertebrate species including rodents. Rodents are among the most important hosts of infectious diseases globally and are responsible for over 80 zoonotic pathogens that affect humans. Therefore, screening pathogens in rodents will be is necessary to prevent cross-species transmission to prevent zoonotic outbreaks. In the present study, we screened caliciviruses and astroviruses in order to describe their diversity and whether they harbor strains that can infect humans. RNA was then extracted from intestine samples of 245 rodents and retrotranscribed in cDNA to screen caliciviruses and astroviruses by PCRs. All the samples tested negative for caliciviruses and while astroviruses were detected in 18 (7.3%) samples of Rattus rattus species. Phylogenetic analyses based on the RdRp gene showed that all the sequences belonged to Mamastrovirus genus in which they were genetically related to R. rattus related AstVs previously detected in Gabon or in Rattus spp. AstV from Kenya and Asia. These findings suggested that transportation such as land and railway, as well national and international trade, are likely to facilitate spread of AstVs by the dissemination of rodents

A new primate community from the earliest Oligocene of the Atlantic margin of Northwest Africa: Systematic, paleobiogeographic and paleoenvironmental implications

    No full text
International audienceWe report a new Paleogene primate community discovered in the uppermost part of the Samlat Formation outcropping on the continental shore of the Rio de Oro, east of the Dakhla peninsula (in the south of Morocco, near the northern border of Mauritania). Fossils consist of isolated teeth, which were extracted by wet screening of estuarine sediments (DAK C2) dating from the earliest Oligocene (ca. 33.5 Ma). These dental remains testify to the presence of at least eight primate species, documenting distinct families, four of which are among the Anthropoidea (Oligopithecidae [Catopithecus aff. browni], Propliopithecidae [?Propliopithecus sp.], Parapithecidae [Abuqatrania cf. basiodontos], and Afrotarsiidae [Afrotarsius sp.]) and four in the Strepsirrhini (a Djebelemuridae [cf. ‘Anchomomys’ milleri], a Galagidae [Wadilemur cf. elegans], a possible lorisiform [Orogalago saintexuperyi gen. et sp. nov.], and a strepsirrhine of indeterminate affinities [Orolemur mermozi gen. et sp. nov.]). This record of various primates at Dakhla represents the first Oligocene primate community from Northwest Africa, especially from the Atlantic margin of that landmass. Considering primates plus rodents (especially hystricognaths), the taxonomic proximity at the generic (even specific) level between DAK C2 (Dakhla) and the famous Egyptian fossil-bearing localities of the Jebel Qatrani Formation (Fayum Depression), either dating from the latest Eocene (L-41) or from the early Oligocene, suggests the existence of an east-west ‘trans-North African’ environmental continuum during the latest Eocene–earliest Oligocene time interval. The particularly diverse mammal fauna from DAK C2, recorded within the time window of global climate deterioration characterizing the Eocene/Oligocene transition, suggests that this tropical region of northwest Africa was seemingly less affected, if at all, by the cooling and associated paleoenvironmental and biotic changes documented at that time, or at least that the effects were delayed. The expected densely forested paleoenvironment bordering the western margin of North Africa at the beginning of the early Oligocene probably offered better tropical refugia than higher latitudes or more inland areas during the cooling episode

    No full text
International audienceThis manuscript describes unpublished dental and postcranial material of artiodactyls and perissodactyls from the Valbro deposits (Phosphorites from Quercy, France). It is the fifth contribution on this site. This paleokarst yielded 14 euungulate taxa with, among the artiodactyls, the dichobunid Dichobune fraasi, the entelodontid Entelodon sp., the cainotheriids Paroxacron valdense, Plesiomeryx cadurcensis, Ple. huer- zeleri and Caenomeryx cf. procommunis, the gelocids Gelocus communis and Pseudogelocus scotti and the bachitheriid cf. Bachitherium sp.; and among the perissodactyls, the palaeotheriids Plagiolophus ministri and Pl. minor, the rhinocerotids Ronzotherium filholi and Epiaceratherium magnum and the eggysodontid Eggysodon osborni. The association of these species confirms an early Oligocene age (Rupelian), close to the MP22 reference level, and allows us to propose a faunal list of 72 vertebrate taxa. Among the Valbro vertebrates, euongulates are one of the most diverse groups and constitute the largest specimen collec- tion. This abundance is essentially due to the large number of cainotheriid remains found in the deposit, and is comparable to that of rodents. Compared with contemporary European sites, the artiodactyl and perissodactyl fauna from Valbro is among the most diversified in western Europe.

Exploring rhizobial diversity in tara (Caesalpinia spinosa) by trapping with pea (Pisum sativum)

International audienceTara (Caesalpinia spinosa) is an emblematic legume tree of Peruvian dry forests and is a multi-purpose tree for tannins and gum, in particular. Despite its importance, the microbiological aspects associated with tara are not currently considered in forest management, and its nodulation status remains contentious. This study sought to confirm or deny C. spinosa's nodulation status and, using P. sativum as a trap plant, to investigate the effects of C. spinosa on rhizospheric rhizobial communities. The study revealed a lack of tara nitrogenase activity and that C. spinosa is a non-nodulating species. Soil samples were collected from a tara plantation to investigate their effect on tara and pea growth, in a tara planting row (R), between 2 rows (IR), and outside the plantation (OP). For the total biomass growth parameter, soil R significantly promoted tara and pea growth. For root length and leaf chlorophyll content, there was a significant difference in favor of C. spinosa grown on R and IR soils compared with OP soil. Fifty-seven pea strains were characterized by analyzing the partial 16S-23S rDNA intergenic spacer. The phylogenetic tree showed high diversity with five clusters of Rhizobium spp. in the R. leguminosarumetli clade and phylogenetic specificity according to soil origin. This study provides information of interest on the non-nodulating nature of C. spinosa and demonstrates the substantial influence of tara on rhizospheric bacterial communities. The results of this study highlight the need to integrate microbiological factors into forest management strategies to improve the ecological sustainability and agricultural yield of tara plantations

Dental morphology evolution in early peratheriines, including a new morphologically cryptic species and findings on the largest early Eocene European metatherian

    No full text
International audienceThe initial stages of the evolutionary history of peratheriines, the European herpetotheriid metatherians, are largely unknown, primarily due to their limited morphological dental disparity throughout the Palaeogene, coupled with significant intraspecific variation. Based on eleven molars, we document a new early peratheriine species, Peratherium musivum sp. nov., which is larger than and morphologically similar to the earliest peratheriine, Peratherium constans (MP7). Subtle molar characters are shared with the largest early Eocene peratheriine, Peratherium maximum comb. nov. We illustrate the importance of studying possible changes in molar cusp – basin proportions and correlated characters that occured during peratheriine evolution. Peratherium musivum sp. nov., which spanned only part of the MP7-MP8+9 time interval, and the ~MP8+9 Peratherium maximum comb. nov., were probably widespread in Western Europe. The description of a well preserved mandible of the latter, from La Borie (~MP8+9), reveals original features concerning relative size and shape of dental alveoli, partly corroborated using isolated molars. These traits are absent in the younger, most representative species of both peratheriine genera, Peratherium and Amphiperatherium. Based on the aforementioned data and a critical review, it is demonstrated that peratheriine genera lack consistent definitions, so that the Peratherium/Amphiperatherium dichotomy is plausibly inapplicable to early Eocene representatives

Crises et protection sociale en Afrique Subsaharienne

    No full text
