Examining Chlorophyll Extraction Methods in Sesame Genotypes: Uncovering Leaf Coloration Effects and Anatomy Variations
International audienceThis study focuses on optimizing chlorophyll extraction techniques, in which leaf discs are cut from places on the leaf blade to enhance chlorophyll concentration in sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) leaves. Thirty sesame genotypes, categorized into light green (LG), middle green (MG), and deep green (DG) pigment groups based on leaf coloration, were selected from a larger pool of field-grown accessions. The investigation involved determining optimal Soil Plant Analysis Development (SPAD) value index measurements, quantifying pigment concentrations, exploring extraction solvents, and selecting suitable leaf disk positions. Significant variations in chlorophyll content were observed across genotypes, greenness categories, and leaf disk positions. The categorization of genotypes into DG, MG, and LG groups revealed a correlation between leaf appearance and chlorophyll content. The study highlighted a consistent relationship between carotenoids and chlorophyll, indicating their role in adaptation to warm environments. An examination of leaf disk positions revealed a significant chlorophyll gradient along the leaf blade, emphasizing the need for standardized protocols. Chlorophyll extraction experiments identified DMSO and 96% ethanol, particularly in those incubated for 10 min at 85 °C, as effective choices. This recommendation considers factors like cost-effectiveness, time efficiency, safety, and environmental regulations, ensuring consistent and simplified extraction processes. For higher chlorophyll extraction, focusing on leaf tips and the 75% localization along the sesame leaf blade is suggested, as this consistently yields increased chlorophyll content. Furthermore, our examination revealed significant anatomical variations in the internal structure of the mesophyll tissue leaves between deep green and light green sesame plants, primarily linked to chloroplast density and pigment-producing structures. Our findings, therefore, provide insightful knowledge of chlorophyll gradients and encourage the use of standardized protocols that enable researchers to refine their experimental designs for precise and comparable chlorophyll measurements. The recommended solvent choices ensure reliable outcomes in plant physiology, ecology, and environmental studies
Les routes de la transition énergétique
International audienceThe South Andean territory that goes from the Bolivian Altiplano to the Chilean coast and the Argentinian Andes is a strategic region for the global energy transition, with immense reserves of copper, lithium and other critical minerals essentials for the decarbonization of the world economy. The exponential rise of these extractive industries is profoundly redrawing the socio-spatial structures of this region of the planet. The purpose of our presentation is to study, not the localized modes of mining extraction, but how these minerals circulate, are exchanged and transported across the Andean space and to global points of consumption. How, where and to where are lithium and the other minerals of the energy transition flowing? Based on the itinerant seminar "Las carreteras de la transición energética" realized in December of 2023, and on surveys dedicated to the contemporary mining development (ANR Ecoboom) our intervention will present the first results of this approach, showing how extraction sites connect to each other, generating new customs issues, new flows of goods and new processes of regional integration. This dynamic goes against the grain of "resource nationalism" and poses in new terms the question of local and national sovereignty in the face of new international attempts to control resources
LiDAR Data Fusion to Improve Forest Attribute Estimates: A Review
International audienceMany LiDAR remote sensing studies over the past decade promised data fusion as a potential avenue to increase accuracy, spatial-temporal resolution, and information extraction in the final data products. Here, we performed a structured literature review to analyze relevant studies on these topics published in the last decade and the main motivations and applications for fusion, and the methods used. We discuss the findings with a panel of experts and report important lessons, main challenges, and future directions.Recent Findings: LiDAR fusion with other datasets, including multispectral, hyperspectral, and radar, is found to be useful for a variety of applications in the literature, both at individual tree level and at area level, for tree/crown segmentation, aboveground biomass assessments, canopy height, tree species identification, structural parameters, and fuel load assessments etc. In most cases, gains are achieved in improving the accuracy (e.g. better tree species classifications), and spatial-temporal resolution (e.g. for canopy height). However, questions remain regarding whether the marginal improvements reported in a range of studies are worth the extra investment, specifically from an operational point of view. We also provide a clear definition of “data fusion” to inform the scientific community on data fusion, combination, and integration.Summary: This review provides a positive outlook for LiDAR fusion applications in the decade to come, while raising questions about the trade-off between benefits versus the time and effort needed for collecting and combining multiple datasets
International audienceIn the governorate of Kébili in southern Tunisia, irrigated areas have developed considerably over the last 30 years. The traditional oasis system, based on three-level cultivation and complementarity between agriculture and livestock farming, has been undermined. Many farmers have limited their activities to date production, both in traditional oases and in the new irrigated areas. This article measures the influence of water availability and various factors related to farmers’ orientations on their decision to implement ecologically intensive farming practices. The main practices studied are the cultivation of fruit trees under palm trees and the use of manure as a fertiliser. Fifty farmers, who obtained the management of agricultural land in the municipality of Jemna at the beginning of the 2000s, were surveyed. Water availability is a major factor facilitating ecologically intensive practices. These practices are also favoured by the fact that family income is primarily derived from the plot in the study area. Another important factor is the interest in sustainable farm management − as opposed to management aimed at short-term profitability. There are farmers in Kébili governorate who want to make farming an economic and a life project and who are willing to implement ecologically intensive farming practices. The decline in agrobiodiversity observed in the traditional oases of southern Tunisia is therefore not inevitable, if access to water is improved and if life projects based on agriculture are made more feasible.
Global governance through voluntary sustainability standards: developments, trends and challenges
International audienceVoluntary Sustainability Standards (VSS) are transnational governance instruments that can be leveraged to pursue sustainable development in global value chains. They have proliferated since the 1990s in terms of their number and the share of global production they govern. This paper shares some key insights arising from the considerable body of literature that has analysed the role of these instruments for sustainable production and trade. First, it introduces VSS, traces the evolution of their adoption and takes stock of the research on their sustainability impacts. Next, some major developments in the VSS realm are discussed, related to public policy and the emergence of national sustainability standards. The paper then zooms in on the challenges and limitations of VSS in transforming value chains towards sustainability, focusing on the shortcomings related to inclusiveness and the problems arising from their proliferation. The paper concludes by distilling recommendations on overcoming these challenges, especially in light of recent policy developments, and outlines what different stakeholders can do to make VSS more effective and inclusive instruments for sustainable value chains
Generation of country-scale canopy height maps over Gabon using deep learning and TanDEM-X InSAR data
International audienceOperational canopy height mapping at high resolution remains a challenging task at country- level. Most of the existing state-of-the-art inversion methods propose physically-based schemes which are specifically tuned for local scales. Only few approaches in the literature have attempted to produce country or global scale estimates, mostly by means of data-driven approaches and multi-spectral data sources. In this paper, we propose a robust deep learning approach that exploits single-pass interferometric TanDEM-X data to generate accurate forest height estimates from a single interferometric bistatic acquisition. The model development is driven by considerations on both the final performance and the trustworthiness of the model for large-scale deployment in the context of tropical forests. We train and test our model over the five tropical sites of the AfriSAR 2016 campaign, situated in the West Central state of Gabon, performing spatial cross-validation experiments to test its generalization capability. We define a specific training dataset and input predictors to develop a robust model for country-scale inference, by finding an optimal trade-off between the model performance and the large-scale reliability. The proposed model achieves an overall estimation bias of 0.12 m, a mean absolute error of 3.90 m, a root mean squared error of 5.08 m and a coefficient of determination of 0.77. Finally, we generate a time-tagged country-scale canopy height map of Gabon at 25 m resolution, discussing the potential and challenges of these kinds of products for their application in different scenarios and for the monitoring of forest changes

Predicting species invasiveness with genomic data: Is genomic offset related to establishment probability?
The B. tryoni data have already been published and have permissions appropriate for fully public release. The code necessary to reproduce the simulations, compute simulations GO, and use the optimized version of Gradient Forest package is available at https://forgemia.inra.fr/simon.boitard/popgenomicprediction.International audiencePredicting the risk of establishment and spread of populations outside their native range represents a major challenge in evolutionary biology. Various methods have recently been developed to estimate population (mal)adaptation to a new environment with genomic data via so-called Genomic Offset (GO) statistics. These approaches are particularly promising for studying invasive species but have still rarely been used in this context. Here, we evaluated the relationship between GO and the establishment probability of a population in a new environment using both in silico and empirical data. First, we designed invasion simulations to evaluate the ability to predict establishment probability of two GO computation methods (Geometric GO and Gradient Forest) under several conditions. Additionally, we aimed to evaluate the interpretability of absolute Geometric GO values, which theoretically represent the adaptive genetic distance between populations from distinct environments. Second, utilizing public empirical data from the crop pest species Bactrocera tryoni, a fruit fly native from Northern Australia, we computed GO between “source” populations and a diverse range of locations within invaded areas. This practical application of GO within the context of a biological invasion underscores its potential in providing insights and guiding recommendations for future invasion risk assessment. Overall, our results suggest that GO statistics represent good predictors of the establishment probability and may thus inform invasion risk, although the influence of several factors on prediction performance (e.g., propagule pressure or admixture) will need further investigation
