    Development of solar powered irrigation system

    Development of a solar powered irrigation system has been discussed in this paper. This system would be SCADA-based and quite useful in areas where there is plenty of sunshine but insufficient water to carry out farming activities, such as rubber plantation, strawberry plantation, or any plantation, that requires frequent watering. The system is powered by solar system as a renewable energy which uses solar panel module to convert Sunlight into electricity. The development and implementation of an automated SCADA controlled system that uses PLC as a controller is significant to agricultural, oil and gas monitoring and control purpose purposes. In addition, the system is powered by an intelligent solar system in which solar panel targets the radiation from the Sun. Other than that, the solar system has reduced energy cost as well as pollution. The system is equipped with four input sensors; two soil moisture sensors, two level detection sensors. Soil moisture sensor measures the humidity of the soil, whereas the level detection sensors detect the level of water in the tank. The output sides consist of two solenoid valves, which are controlled respectively by two moistures sensors

    Effect of tuber skin on the thermal properties of whole tubers of potato and sweet potato

    Temperature-dependent thermal coefficients of mathematical models of the postharvest storage process play an important role in determining the models accuracy. Thermal properties of tubers under storage available in literature are generally of those in semi processed form (skinless) such as those having undergone peeling, dicing and cutting actions. This study investigates the effect of tuber skin on the thermal properties of whole tubers of potato and sweet potato. A direct approach was used to measure the tubers' density and thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity by the transient heat transfer method. Indirect approach was used to measure the tubers' specific heat. Experimental data were used to develop empirical models of the thermal coefficients as a function of temperature. Results of the study should find great use in the modeling of potato and sweet potato storage process

    Development of an Ambient Control Method for Tomatoes Preservation

    Thus, this work is aim at developing an ambient control method for tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum) preservationThe quality of tomatoes depends on post harvest handling, transportation and storage techniques. Tomatoes cannot be kept for a long period of time due to their perishable and seasonal nature, it is therefore necessary to preserve it in seasons when available in other to ensure constant supply throughout the year with their nutritional value still retained. However, a 0.22 cubic metre capacity storage facility that operates on the principle of evaporative cooling, which is to increase the shelf life of stored tomatoes was designed, fabricated and tested. Data were observed twice daily and Results of the transient performance tests revealed that 117W is the cooling capacity of the produce (tomatoes) at 29.50C. Also, it was observed that the dry bulb (21-300C) and wet bulb (14.5-240C) temperatures are inversely proportional to the relative humidity (39-56%) of the cooler, which in turn show inverse relationship between the saturation efficiency (0-74.42%) and by-pass factor (0.26-1.00). An evaporative cooling system should be utilized to preserve tomatoes and other forms of vegetables at their minimal storage temperature in fourteen days relative to ambient storage. Thus, it has the prospect of being used for short term preservation of tomatoes soon after harvest and it will be very useful in helping the farmers most especially in a developing economy like Nigeria.Self-sponsore

    Experimental Verification of a New Technique for the Dry Separation of Palm Kernel and Shell Mixture

    Effective separation of the cracked palm nut mixture is an important process in the downstream utilisation of the constituent palm kernel and shell in some existing and emerging agro-economy. Whilst, the conventional wet separators are sophisticated and energy inefficient, the dry systems are at experimental stages and are inadequate for separating kernel and shell of comparable sizes. However, the difference in the path variables of particles of same size, but different shapes, in circular motion, suggests the possibility of separating the dry mixture in a rotating trammel with a co-axial spout. Based on the theory, the study investigated the dispatch angles for palm kernel and shell from a friction lining on the inner curved surface of drums of different diameters and rotating speeds. A built experimental facility allowed estimation of the dispatch angle for particles placed on the lining. The results show that palm kernels oscillate and move axially with the dispatch angle increasing with the drum diameter, but consistently less than 90o for the different diameters and speeds of the drum. The shells are dislodged at higher dispatch angles and in curvilinear trajectories away from the drum surface, causing a separation of the mixture. It is concluded that the experimental data are in good agreement with the theory and that the theory is sufficiently adequate for the determination of the design parameters of a proprietary separator

Cataloguing is not just building a catalogue, but about providing users with timely access to information relevant to their needs. The task of identifying resources collected by libraries, results in rich metadata that can be used for many purposes. It involves describing resources and showing their relationships to persons, families, corporate bodies and other resources, thereby enabling users to navigate through libraries to quickly get information they need. The metadata constructed throughout the life cycle of a resource is especially valuable to many types of users, from creators of resources to publishers, subscription agents, book vendors, resource aggregators, system vendors, libraries and other institutions, and end users. The new international cataloguing code, RDA (resource description and access) is discussed in this paper, with a view to meet fundamental user tasks in a way that produces wellformed, interconnected metadata for the digital environment

    The research was done to examine the perception, knowledge and reception attitude of Information professionals at Covenant University Library. The nature of Lib 2.0 was briefly explained. The research paper also captured problem factors that hinder successful implementation of Library 2.0. The results show that a high level of awareness of Library 2.0 applications among information professionals. Blogs, RSS, IM and other Web 2.0 tools and services can assist Information professionals in their efforts to present information and better connect with their clients, especially the younger generations of Internet users. Though the librarians hold positive perceptions on library 2.0 applications, and indicated willingness to learn more on the utilization of 2.0 tools, they highlighted several impediments in implementing Library 2.0

    Adult Education and Lifelong Learning: The Indispensability of Libraries

    The paper considers the widespread recognition that learning is not merely confined to the different stages that are associated with the early periods of life but rather spans through life. It emphasizes the importance of the library to adult education, noting that the quality and credibility of adult education as well as lifelong learning opportunities in a country is determined by the robustness of library services available in that country. The paper further highlights the point that public libraries in Nigeria are severely flawed as agencies of education and social development as they virtually non- existed in the rural and urban marginal areas. Even in the few urban centres where they exist, their services are undermined by poor funding and obsolete as well as inadequate stocks. The paper thus notes that this has great repercussion for adult learning in the country since a quality library service is pivotal to any meaningful adult education and lifelong learning programs. It concludes that in order to be effective and act as a catalyst to quality education, especially for adult learners, the public library must evolve to mirror vitality of good library service and sustain the interest of its users

    New consumer load prototype for electricity theft monitoring

    Illegal connection which is direct connection to the distribution feeder and tampering of energy meter has been identified as a major process through which nefarious consumers steal electricity on low voltage distribution system. This has contributed enormously to the revenue losses incurred by the power and energy providers. A Consumer Load Prototype (CLP) is constructed and proposed in this study in order to understand the best possible pattern through which the stealing process is effected in real life power consumption. The construction of consumer load prototype will facilitate real time simulation and data collection for the monitoring and detection of electricity theft on low voltage distribution system. The prototype involves electrical design and construction of consumer loads with application of various standard regulations from Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), formerly known as Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE). LABVIEW platform was used for data acquisition and the data shows a good representation of the connected loads. The prototype will assist researchers and power utilities, currently facing challenges in getting real time data for the study and monitoring of electricity theft. The simulation of electricity theft in real time is one of the contributions of this prototype. Similarly, the power and energy community including students will appreciate the practical approach which the prototype provides for real time information rather than software simulation which has hitherto been used in the study of electricity theft

    Biologically active solid deposits in biocide treated oil and gas pipelines from a Nigerian onshore oil production facility

    Pipelines transporting crude oil, produced water and gas from an onshore oil producing facility in Nigeria are subject to frequent corrosion failures despite treatment programs with chlorine (0.5mg L-1) and sodium azide (0.2 mg L-1). Solid deposit samples from 6 corroded pipelines were analyzed chemically and biologically to determine whether the corrosion episodes were as a result of microbial activity. Microbiological analysis showed relatively high concentrations of microorganisms associated with corrosion such as SRBs (103-105 cell g-1) and APBs (103-107 cells g-1) while chemical analysis showed evidence of corrosion products such as iron II, calcium, sulfide, carbonate and bicarbonate. Chemical analysis also revealed that environmental conditions such as availability of nutrients, pH, moisture and redox potential were favorable for the growth and proliferation of these microorganisms. All the pipeline samples that were investigated recorded remarkable corrosion rates that ranged from 0.065-0.30 mm yr-1 but the rates were higher in chloride treated pipelines. Our investigation revealed that the solid deposit samples were biologically active and pipeline corrosion was as a result of microbial activity. Thus the prevalence of bio-corrosion is likely to be higher in cases where routine pipeline cleaning and checks are not strictly adhered to despite regular biocide treatment program
