Attitude of Junior and Senior Post-primary School Students in Ado-odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State to The Use of Library and Library Materials and The Successes They Achieve in Examinations
The research focused on the use of libraries by students of post-primary schools in Ado-Ota Local government Area of Ogun State with particular reference to private and public schools. The study was limited to the students in the senior classes. It is inevitable to say that the foundation giving as regards the process of teaching/ learning goes a long way in the formulations of the students both for the now and the future. This study was carried out to investigate if the use of library and its materials contribute in the success that the students achieve? Only one hypothesis was formed to set the pace for this study: “the attitudes and success of Junior and Senior postprimary school students are not significantly influenced by the use of the library” 100 students of the Junior Secondary III who are moving up into the Senior Secondary Class and 100 of the out-going SS III students, which brings a total of 200 students were investigated. Chi-square technique was used as a means of testing the hypotheses at the level of 0.5. Hypothesis was accepted and vital recommen-dations were made
Effect of Xylopia aethiopica, Fiscus mucuso and Anthocleista vogelli extracts on some Biochemical Parameters following ethanol-Induced Toxicity.
A total of forty rats were divided into eight groups (n= 5). Group A were control rats; Group B 27 were administered with absolute ethanol; Group C were ethanol administered rats treated with 28 Xylopia aethiopica; Groups D were ethanol administered rats treated with Fiscus mucuso, Group 29 E were ethanol administered rats treated with Anthocleista vogelli; Group F were normal rats 30 administered orally with Xylopia aethiopica; Group G were normal rats administered orally with 31 Fiscus mucuso; Group H were normal rats administered orally with Anthocleista vogelli. At the 32 end of the experimental period, the animals were sacrificed and serum was obtained for total 33 protein, uric acid, creatinin, urea, Aspartate aminotrasferase (AST) and Alanine aminotransferase 34 (ALT) analysis using respective research kits. 35
The result showed that Xylopia aethiopica had protective effect on the kidney as compared with 36 Fiscus mucuso and Anthocleista vogelli treated rats. Also, The AST and ALT was lowered with 37 the start of Xylopia aethiopia treatment. The total protein, creatinin and urea were slightly 38 (p> 0.05) affected with ethanol, an effect which was normalized with the start of extract 39 treatment. 4
Classification of Retinal Images Based on Statistical Moments and Principal Component Analysis
Early diagnosis of Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) has been suggested as a good measure of preventing
blindness associated with Diabetes. Some of the reported methodologies of Retinal Images (RI)
classification for early diagnosis of DR have been shown to involve several steps and approaches for
effective and accurate diagnosis. Thus, this paper investigates the classification of RI using a two-stage
procedure. The first stage includes the extraction of blood vessels from RI belonging to healthy and diabetes
retinal images using a modified local entropy thresholding algorithm. In the second stage, different features
are extracted including statistical moments and principal components. The set of extracted features is
combined into one feature vector and fed into a Sequential Minimal Optimization (SMO) classifier. The
obtained result is encouraging with an average accuracy of 68.33 %
Creativity and Innovation in Library and Information Services Delivery in an ICT Age: The Covenant University Library Perspectives
This article discussed creativity and innovation in Library and Information Services: the Covenant University Library Experience. lt highlighted the essence of creativity and innovation, {he creative and innovative ideas at Covenant University Library was also discussed, such as the establishment of escapist reading section, spiritual and leadership section, capacity building initiative , use of ICTs skills for effective services delivery. The paper recommends that Libraries should be creative, they should think of better ways of doing same thing, they should think outside the box, Library management should occasionally call for library staff meeting I discussion where staff should think on how to improve library services, Library schools should also inculcate in students philosophical thinking and analytical skills that will in turn develop creativity and innovation in the mind of the students. It is therefore concluded that 21't century libraries are faced with series of challenges, therefore, the present day librarians must have creative and innovative mind so as to render effective and efficient services to users and also remain relevant in this present age and ages to come
Managing ICT-Driven Libraries in Nigeria: Critical Leadership Issues
The paper examined the nexus between the application of
information and communication technology to library services and
leadership. It noted the pervasiveness of ICT across all professions as
global best practices. It alerts that the twenty-first century libraries are
currently faced with technology savvy clientele and more sophisticated
patrons expecting services that can compete favourably with or better
organised than Google and other retrieval systems. The paper x-rayed
the current state of libraries in Nigeria and averred that innovative
leadership is a critical precondition to mainstreaming the Nigerian
libraries to an enviable pedestal that approximates to international
standards. Other critical leadership issues identified for effective
management of ICT- driven libraries in Nigeria include: leaders capacity
to facilitate change, demonstrating and justifying returns on investment,
ICT capacity building initiatives for librarians, benchmarking practices,
understanding back-up and Anti Intrusion systems, adequate power
supply and bandwidth as well as ensuring that aggregators of electronic
resources indemnify libraries against infringement of copyright
Prevalence and characterisation of non-cholerae Vibrio spp. in final effluents of wastewater treatment facilities in two districts of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa: implications for public health
Vibrios and other enteric pathogens can be found in wastewater effluents of a healthy population. We assessed the prevalence of three non-cholerae vibrios in wastewater effluents of 14 wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) in Chris Hani and Amathole district municipalities in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa for a period of 12 months. With the exception of WWTP10 where presumptive vibrios were not detected in summer and spring, presumptive vibrios were detected in all seasons in other WWTP effluents. When a sample of 1,000 presumptive Vibrio isolates taken from across all sampling sites were subjected to molecular confirmation for Vibrio, 668 were confirmed to belong to the genus Vibrio, giving a prevalence rate of 66.8 %. Further, molecular characterisation of 300 confirmed Vibrio isolates revealed that 11.6 % (35) were Vibrio parahaemolyticus, 28.6 % (86) were Vibrio fluvialis and 28 % (84) were Vibrio vulnificus while 31.8 % (95) belonged to other Vibrio spp. not assayed for in this study. Antibiogram profiling of the three Vibrio species showed that V. parahaemolyticus was ≥50 % susceptible to 8 of the test antibiotics and ≥50 % resistant to only 5 of the 13 test antibiotics, while V. vulnificus showed a susceptibility profile of ≥50 % to 7 of the test antibiotics and a resistance profile of ≥50 % to 6 of the 13 test antibiotics. V. fluvialis showed ≥50 % resistance to 8 of the 13 antibiotics used while showing ≥50 % susceptibility to only 4 antibiotics used. All three Vibrio species were susceptible to gentamycin, cefuroxime, meropenem and imipenem. Multiple antibiotic resistance patterns were also evident especially against such antibiotics as tetracyclin, polymixin B, penicillin G, sulfamethazole and erythromycin against which all Vibrio species were resistant. These results indicate a significant threat to public health, more so in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa which is characterised by widespread poverty, with more than a third of the population directly relying on surface water sources for drinking and daily use
Equilibrium studies of cadmium biosorption by presumed non-viable bacterial strains isolated from polluted sites
Presumed non-viable high resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa CA207Ni, Burkholderia cepacia AL96Co, Corynebacterium kutscheri FL108Hg, and Rhodococcus sp AL03Ni were studied for Cd2+ adsorption potentials. Moderate temperature, acidic pH, and high ionic strength were required for bacterial-sorption of cadmium, attaining isothermic equilibrium within 20 min. Experimental cadmium-biosorption data fitted well into biosorption isotherms. The adsorption capacities of the bacterial cell masses spanned 0.003–0.009 l mg−1 (Langmuir model) and 0.43–0.68 (Freundlich model), while binding capacity ranged from 1.14 to 56.16 mg gdw−1, with maximum achievable cadmium uptake of 62.07–109.37 mg gdw−1. The bacteria selectively removed the metal at low concentration (100.0 mg l−1) with an efficiency ranging from 50.0% to 80.0%, while approximately 80.0–92.0% removal efficiency was obtained at higher ionic concentrations (450.0 mg l−1). About 92.66% of the adsorbed metal was recovered from strain CA207Ni upon desorption, and approximately 91.7% of Cd2+ in solution was re-adsorbed onto the biomasses. In this work, effective feasible biosorption of Cd2+ in simulated wastewater system at harsh physico-chemistry, using non-viable resistant bacterial strains was demonstrated. The results indicate that the bacterial strains are sustainable tools for the detoxification of cadmium ions in industrial effluents via wastewater treatment, and cadmium demobilisation in contaminated ecosystem
Text messaging and retrieval techniques for a mobile health information system
Mobile phones have been identified as one of the technologies that can be used to overcome the challenges of information dissemination regarding serious diseases. Short message services, a much used function of cell phones, for example, can be turned into a major tool for accessing databases. This paper focuses on the design and development of a short message services-based information access algorithm to carefully screen information on human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome within the context of a frequently asked questions system. However, automating the short message services-based information search and retrieval poses significant challenges because of the inherent noise in its communications. The developed algorithm was used to retrieve the best-ranked question–answer pair. Results were evaluated using three metrics: average precision, recall and computational time. The retrieval efficacy was measured and it was confirmed that there was a significant improvement in the results of the proposed algorithm when compared with similar retrieval algorithms
Utilization and User Satisfaction of Public Library Services in South-West, Nigeria in the 21st Century: A Survey
User satisfaction of public library services has become an imperative concern in recent times. There is no doubt
that satisfaction of library services influences the degree in which the services are used and it has been found to be an
important factor that affects the use or non use of library services. This study investigated the utilization and user satisfaction
of public library services in south west Nigeria. A descriptive survey research design was employed for this research and a
total of 400 (four hundred) library users chosen across four states in South-West, Nigeria were used for the study.
Questionnaire was the major instrument used for data collection. Frequency counts and simple percentages were used to
analyze the obtained data. The results showed that there is an improvement in the use of these libraries. Also, lack of adequate
facilities, inadequate/outdated information resources, internet /ICT services in Nigeria public libraries were revealed by the
users as major factors affecting user satisfaction of public library services in this 21st century of information and
communication technology. Based on the findings, it was recommended that funding should be increased by the government
so that adequate information resources and ICT facilities can be acquired in public libraries. And this will also boost the
utilization of public libraries among the Nigerian population who desperately need a place where their information needs
would be met
Determinants of labour force participation in Nigeria: The influence of household structure
This study examines, empirically, the influence of household structure on labor
market participation in Nigeria, using the data collected by the defunct National
Manpower Board in the Nigerian Labour Markket Survey conducted in year 2005.
Iin addition to other traditional explanatory variables, the study employs other
variables measuring the influence of household characteristics of the studied
population in the determination of participation rates. The method of data analysis
is two-fold. The first is the descriptive analyses of the characteristics of the labour
force in Nigeria, while the second employs both the probabilility and logit regression
models in estimating the labour force participation rates. Both methods of analyses
were carried out using the SPSS software. The study establishes the relative
importance of the household structure in influencing labor force participation of
household members while the other traditional economic and socio-demographic
variables conform to apriori expectations. In line with the findings, a gender-friendly
policy that addresses the constraints facing women’s work and their full
participation in the labor market is advocated
