The Case Centre, case study 525-0080-1, teaching note 525-0080-8Bridey Lawson is the CEO of Lawson's Surf Gear, a surf apparel and accessories family business located in Queensland (Australia). The company reported another loss of 1.2 million Australian dollars (AUD) for 2023. Bridey was struggling to retain and recapture the brand's existing customer base of 35- to 49-year-old men and wanted to attract new customers from a younger segment of 18- to 34-year-olds. She wants to investigate how she can revive the brand in 2024 and attract a younger segment. The case tasks students to evaluate the past and present sources of brand equity and analyze its fit with the target audience, prioritize actions to rebuild its customer base, design a (simple) digital marketing campaign, and apply the brand personality framework

Nuturally: Investigating Growth Opportunities for an Environmentally Responsible Brand

The Case Centre, case study 525-0071-1, teaching note 525-0071-8Lucas is the owner and sole operator of Nuturally, a company based in the United States of America (USA) that produces and sells vegan, nut-based products exclusively online, with respect for the environment. In 2020, he launched Clajo, a brand focused exclusively on cashew nut-based products. His first product was a cashew butter, inspired by the recipe of his Brazilian grandmother. Environmental impact is a strong consideration for Lucas, and he has taken several measures to reduce the impact of his products to protect the Amazon rainforest, a cause near to his heart given his heritage. To grow his business further, Lucas wants to investigate which one out of two brand extensions he should implement: olive butter or a candle with the scent of cashews. The case tasks students to apply the main strategies to grow brand equity, evaluate the associations of both the brand extension and the parent brand, assess the fit with and contribution of the brand extension to the parent brand, and investigate parent brand elasticity

The Case Centre, case study 525-0066-1B, teaching note 525-0066-8CThis is part of a case series. David Danes is the founder and CEO of Cobald Group, a business-to-business (B-to-B) technology company headquartered in Brussels (Belgium) operating in web hosting, domain names, and cloud-based solutions. It reported an all-time high revenue of EUR47.3M and profit of EUR11.5M for 2024 thanks to a strong growth of +31% for cloud-based solutions and a stable demand of 1% for domain names, but despite a decrease of 3-4% for web hosting for the third consecutive year. In the last two decades, the company significantly accelerated its activities domestically and internationally. It grew domestically by taking over the Belgian web hosting activities of BlueHosting in 2003 due to a bankruptcy of the parent company. It also grew internationally by acquiring the specialist in standardized offers for small and medium business customers and the fourth-largest player in the Danish market Fastcom in 2017, followed by acquiring the specialist in highly customizable web hosting and cloud services for medium and large business customers and third-largest player in the Danish market ODomain in 2019. Finally, in 2022, it acquired HollandOnline, the market leader for small and medium business customers in the Netherlands. Given the company's decline in market share in the web hosting market, David wants to analyze the company's current brand portfolio, identify opportunities for building a brand architecture and leveraging associations, and get a clear recommendation how to proceed

    Customer education in business-to-business contexts

    No full text
International audienceCurrent trends in business-to-business (B2B) services are increasingly bringing customer education (CEd) to the spotlight. Despite the growing recognition of the benefits of CEd, understanding how it is deployed in B2B firms remains a gap in academic literature. Our study addresses this gap by following a qualitative, empirical approach to investigate how CEd is managed across 29 B2B firms. The findings from our research suggest that CEd is a complex set of activities involving multiple stakeholders from both the customers as well as the B2B firm. Our research identified CEd as a process comprising three stages: (a) prepare for CEd, (b) deploy CEd, and (c) measure CEd. Basing ourselves on the findings from our research, we propose a conceptual framework of CEd in B2B contexts. Our findings contribute to the literature by offering a process-based view of CEd, clarifying the intra-organizational coordination it requires, and demonstrating how CEd unfolds across the customer journey. This research advances theoretical understanding of CEd as a cross-functional capability in B2B settings. We provide managerial recommendations and suggest areas for future research

The Case Centre, case study 125-0075-1, teaching note 125-0075-8, teaching note supplement 125-0075-8BThe Case Centre, case study 125-0075-1, teaching note 125-0075-8, teaching note supplement 125-0075-8BThis case places learners in a fast-paced, real-world role-play scenario where they are urgently contacted to prepare a financial data analytics and visualization workshop using Python and generative AI assistance. The objective is to develop comprehensive and visually engaging financial analysis under tight time constraints. Unlike traditional case studies, this case explicitly integrates AI-supported workflows as a core competency, enabling learners to leverage large language models to accelerate Python coding, visualization, and statistical analysis. The role-play is activated through an email sent by a senior manager (the instructor) that outlines detailed tasks for workshop preparation. The case is designed for individual work but encourages students to consult open-access sources and interact with AI tools to facilitate their problem-solving process. Instructors provide on-demand feedback and support as students make progress through the tasks. This dynamic learning experience fosters technical autonomy, critical thinking, and the ability to navigate Python environments efficiently with AI assistance while developing essential skills in financial data storytelling and time-sensitive project delivery

Why Is the Ceiling Silver? Uncovering the Role of Potential Appraisals in the Age–Promotion Relationship

    No full text
International audienceIn this research, we set out to uncover why silver ceilings exist in organizations. Drawing on systematic–heuristic processing theory and recent psychological findings, we propose that “older” workers (aged 45 or more) are less likely to receive promotions because these decisions are based on potential appraisals, which are susceptible to managers’ heuristic (stereotypical) thinking. We test our hypotheses using two‐wave field data (Study 1) from a large financial organization and an experiment (Study 2) in which we manipulate age while holding all else equal. Both studies show that employee age has a negative effect on promotion likelihood and that this relationship is mediated by managers’ potential appraisals. Moreover, Study 2 also provides evidence for our theoretical rationale showing that the central effect is driven by managers’ heuristic processing and work‐related age stereotypes. Across both studies, our results provide consistent support for our hypothesis that appraisals of potential constitute a potent pathway via which managers’ age stereotypes can affect promotion decisions in organizations. We discuss theoretical contributions to the literature on workplace aging, employee appraisals, and personnel decisions, and formulate practical recommendations to help organizations tackle silver ceilings in the workplace
