Negative moment of inertia of large- gluons on a ring
International audienceWe study SU() Yang-Mills theory in dimensions at finite temperature on a spatial ring that rotates uniformly in a plane. We show that the effect of rotation results only in a simple kinematic enhancement of the gauge coupling , which becomes rescaled by a Lorentz factor corresponding to the tangential rotational velocity of the ring. Using well-established analytic results in Yang-Mills theory in the 't Hooft limit of an infinite number of colors, we demonstrate that the moment of inertia of the large- gluon plasma on the ring is negative. This counterintuitive conclusion is, however, in agreement with recent first-principle numerical simulations of hot dimensional SU(3) Yang-Mills theory that also reported a negative moment of inertia for gluon plasma in an experimentally relevant window of temperatures above the deconfinement transition. Furthermore, we argue that our picture provides a qualitative explanation for three other intriguing features observed in lattice simulations of vortical QCD: the emergence of a spatially inhomogeneous mixed phase, the inconsistency of its spatial structure with a standard picture dictated by the Tolman-Ehrenfest law, and the enhancement of the critical deconfining temperature by rotation
A new scale anomaly in Dirac matter
International audienceThe dynamics of Dirac semimetals is modeled at low energies by the massless Dirac Hamiltonian with the Fermi velocity replacing the velocity of light. The classical action is scale invariant. In 3D materials, Coulomb interactions induce a conformal anomaly associated to the charge renormalization already known in quantum field theory. In this work, we describe a new conformal anomaly induced by the running of the Fermi velocity that applies to Dirac semimetals in two and three dimensions. The case of graphene is particularly interesting. We analyze the anomaly and explore its thermodynamic and hydrodynamic consequences. The anomaly modifies the propagation speed of hydrodynamic sound waves, alters the thermodynamic equation of state, and induces a non-vanishing bulk viscosity proportional to the beta function of the Fermi velocity
Inflammatory status of periprostatic adipose tissue from men with prostate cancer: Ethno-geographic variations and association with lipid composition
International audienceBackground: Since prostate cancer (PCa) risk is associated with ethnicity, it is crucial to investigate ethno-geographic variations in PCa studies. Periprostatic adipose tissue (PPAT) has been involved in cancer aggressiveness through the release of lipids and inflammatory mediators, and we previously reported a different lipid composition of PPAT according to the ethno-geographic origin. We aimed to analyze the expression of a panel of adipokines in PPAT from African-Caribbean and Caucasian patients, in correlation with features of PCa aggressiveness and lipid composition. Methods: Adipokines expression was analyzed by RTqPCR in PPAT from 110 Caucasians and 50 African-Caribbeans patients, in parallel with the characterization of fatty acids and cholesterol content. Results: The most expressed cytokines were IL10, leptin and IL8. The expression of most adipokines was higher in PPAT from Caucasians compared to African-Caribbean patients. IL6 was associated with features of PCa aggressiveness in Caucasians, with a difference close to significance. Most cytokines were associated with the lipid composition of PPAT, mainly with arachidonic acid and free cholesterol content. Conclusions: The differential cytokines expression in PPAT from African-Caribbean patients compared to Caucasians probably reflects a different inflammatory status. The close relationship between adipokines expression and lipid composition highlights the importance of diet and lipid metabolism in adipose tissue inflammation
Influence of dietary crude protein and electrolyte balance on nitrogen budget and gas emissions in broilers
International audienceNitrogen (N) use efficiency is a major issue in animal production, and improving it can reduce the environmental impact associated with N losses. Here, we studied the effects of dietary crude protein (CP) and dietary electrolyte balance (DEB) on N balance, litter composition and gas emissions. The experiment was conducted in two consecutive replicates of 37 d and 35 d with 432 and 456 one-day-old Ross 308 male chicks. Broilers were randomly distributed in 12 environmentally controlled chambers designed to measure ammonia (NH3) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. After a common starter diet (0 d–9 d), four experimental treatments were tested during growing (10 d–20 d) and finishing (21 d to the end of the rearing period) periods: control (CT); low CP and reduced DEB (LCP; −16 and −30 g CP kg−1; −75 and −78 mEq kg−1 in growing and finishing periods); and two low-CP treatments with either potassium (K) carbonate (LCP + K) or sodium (Na) bicarbonate (LCP + Na) supplementation to bring the DEB back to the control level. The results show that the N2O emissions per broiler were not impacted by dietary treatment, whereas NH3 volatilisation was reduced in the LCP, LCP + K, and LCP + Na treatments compared with CT (−72%, −47%, and −57%, respectively; P < 0.001). The reduction in NH3 emissions is due to a reduction in N excretion and volatilisation rate. In fact, the reduction in N excretion accounts for between 35% and 52% of the reduction in NH3 emissions, depending on the DEB level. Reducing dietary CP and DEB could be used to decrease NH3 volatilisation in broiler production

From Blasius of Parma to Alexander Achillini: New Conception of Relations Between Mathematics and Physics
International audienceWith Blasius of Parma is developed an original conception of the relations between mathematics and physics. Without challenging the Peripatetician theory of abstraction, that can account for the origin of quantitative concepts, Blasius emphasizes the duality between mathematics and physics, that will lead, in return, to conceive the application of mathematics to nature as an approximation. This theory attributing to mathematics an operative status, has precedents in Buridan or Oresme, but it is accentuated here by the affirmation of a sort of « double truth » between mathematics and physics. This conceptual framework will determine the whole later Italian tradition, that explores the « calculus of movement » as an application of the theory of ratios and proportions to physics. This continuous tradition goes from Blasius of Parma to Alexander Achillini (1463-1512), whose Question about the ratios between the movements was published in 1515. We find in Achillini the echoes of numerous debates : some of them are properly mathematical, and concern the understanding (or lack of understanding) of the theory of ratios of ratios (de proportionibus proportionum) coming from Bradwardine and especially Oresme ; some others concern correlatively discussions about the application of mathematical rules to the theory of motion. With the concepts of excessus or dominium of a movement on another, but also the concept of natural minimum applied to motion, one can distinguish the point of view of mathematical quantity and that of natural motion. If some objections against the « moderns » (the Oresmian tradition) are based on Aristotle, Avempace and Averroes, when discussing the theory of ratios and the rules of movement, they also lead to a conception of mathematics as an instrument that must be adjusted to a physical reality that has its owns constraints. I propose to look for and describe some stages in that tradition that goes from Blasius of Parma to Alexander Achillini through John Marliani (end of 15th century) or Vittorio Faventini (beginning of the 16th.).Avec Blaise de Parme se développe une conception originale des rapports entre mathématiques et physique.
OR “Machine learning” OR “deep learning” OR “neural network” OR “random Forest” AND “Job satisfaction” OR “work satisfaction” OR “employee satisfaction” OR “worker satisfaction” OR “occupational satisfaction” OR “satisfaction at work”.
