Deterministic limit of a stochastic individual-based model of biological tissue interacting with diffusing chemicals
Mathematical models of biological tissues are a promising tool for multi-scale data integration, computational experiments and system biology approaches. While some data and insights originate at the cellular level, macroscopic mechanisms emerge and are observed at the tissue scale, making tissue modeling an inherently multi-scale process. Consequently, tissue models can be broadly categorized into individual-based or continuous population-based. In this paper, we first introduce a generic individual-based model of biological tissue including the main regulation processes such as cell division, differentiation, migration and death, along with cell-cell mechanical interactions. This cell population interacts with diffusing molecules, which are consumed or produced by cells and, in turn, regulate cellular behavior. This model is a measure-valued, piecewise-deterministic Markov process, coupled with reaction-diffusion PDEs. We establish the well-posedness of the model and rigorously derive its large-population deterministic limit
Deep Learning Approach to Identify and Classify Arabic Verbal Multi-Word Expressions
International audienceThis paper focuses on the identification and classification of Arabic Verbal Multi-Word Expressions (VMWE), which are combinations of words with a unitary meaning and containing at least one verb. We describe our contribution to annotating the Arabic-annotated-conll17 corpus with VMWEs, following the annotation guide of the PARSEME framework, and using the ChatGPT model to enrich the corpus with sentences that contain more linguistic phenomena. We propose a method for the identification and classification of Arabic VMWEs based on machine learning (Random Forest, Decision trees and Support Vector Machine) and deep learning (Conv1D+BiLSTM) models. The results show that our Random Forest model outperformed others in identification, while the Decision Tree model excelled in classification. Additionally, our deep learning model exhibited significant performance improvement after data enrichment with ChatGPT. These findings underscore the effectiveness of our approach in addressing this complex problem.</div
Optimizing hygroscopic performance of innovative and sustainable gypsum biocomposites through hybrid biowaste upcycling
International audienceWood-based biowaste represents a plentiful biomaterial on our planet, and harnessing this industrial waste for sustainable construction products is strongly advocated due to its insulation and hygroscopic properties. The primary aim of this work is to implement innovative bio-based gypsum materials by incorporating a mixture of untreated wood and paper wastes. Furthermore, the study aims to comprehensively analyze the hygroscopic properties of these bio-based gypsum composites, comparing them to traditional gypsum boards. To better understand the hydric behavior and particularly the relationship between the porous microstructure and the different properties, several tests including porosity, capillary absorption, sorption isotherm, water vapor permeability, and moisture buffer value (MBV) were performed for various formulations. Moreover, it shows that the biobased composite exhibits a remarkable moisture absorption capacity, nearly 15 times higher than that of the reference sample, and displays a high-water vapor permeability, owing to a significant enlargement in critical pore size. Likewise, all gypsum formulations display MBV values exceeding 2.00 g/(m2.% RH) indicating an excellent ability for moisture regulation. Finally, the findings highlight the potential to create innovative gypsum material, using recycled cellulose waste to provide natural ventilation and moisture regulation through a circular economy approach

First-order behavior of the time constant in non-isotropic continuous first-passage percolation
Consider a homogeneous Poisson point process on () with unit intensity with respect to the Lebesgue measure. For , we define the Boolean model as the union of the balls of volume for the -norm () and centered at the points of . We define a random pseudo-metric on by associating with any path a travel time equal to its -length outside . This defines a continuous model of first-passage percolation, that has been studied in \cite{GT17,GT22} for , the Euclidean norm. For , this model is expected to share common properties with the classical first-passage percolation on the graph with a distribution of passage times of the form . The exact calculation of the time constant of this model is out of reach. We investigate here the behavior of near , and enlighten how the speed at which goes to depends on and . For instance, for , we prove that is of order with where is the number of non null coordinates of . The exact order of is also given for and . Related results are also discussed, about properties of the geodesics, and analog properties on closely related models
