Is there a specificity to oral spelling and what does it tell us about central and peripheral processing levels in written production?

    No full text
International audienceIt is generally assumed that the central cognitive processing involved in written pro-duction is similar, whatever the modality of production: handwriting, typing or oral spelling. Studies on predictors of response times in picture naming provide support for this hypothesis in the case of handwriting and typing. The aim of the current study was to report data in support of this similarity hypothesis for oral spelling. Seventy-five undergraduate students spelled two hundred and thirty-four picture names aloud. Mixed-effects models were run with nine predictors on responses times and oral spelling durations. Oral spelling durations enabled us to investi-gate the interaction between central and peripheral processing levels. Although the results for response times suggest common central processing levels for all produc-tion modalities, the interaction between central and peripheral cognitive processing levels was different from what has been reported, in particular in the case of typing

Acetaminophen, a new tool for the refinement of the experimental infection of toxoplasmosis in mice

    No full text
International audienceIn recent years, animal welfare gained increasing importance in society and especially in scientific research. It has become necessary to refine the experimental procedures as much as possible in infectiology as in our reference model, toxoplasmosis, in accordance with the 3Rs rule and various ethical concerns. Thus, the establishment of a treatment using analgesics would provide relief to animals acutely infected with Toxoplasma gondii . However, the use of analgesics should in no way alter the pathophysiology of the disease and the host immune response, so as not to interfere with the initial scientific study. Little is currently known about the use of acetaminophen (APAP) in an infectious model. In the present work, we studied the impact of APAP at a reference dose of 30 mg/kg/day in a mouse model of acute toxoplasmosis. Zoonotic, telemetric, behavioral, histological and immune parameters were analyzed to better characterize the consequences of treatment with APAP either by gavage or by self-medication in Gel Water. APAP administered by gavage did not induce cellular or tissue toxicity or alter the physiological development of the mice. In addition, the nature of Gel Water itself, independent of APAP, had an effect on the immune response. APAP improved overall well-being and slowed the onset of clinical signs without altering the physiopathology or the immune responses induced by T. gondii . These first results in mice confirmed our initial hypothesis that APAP appears to be a pharmacological tool to refine and improve animal welfare during the acute phase of toxoplasmosis. Therefore, our project has highlighted the combination of specific markers to contribute to animal welfare in mice. In the long term, the use of APAP could be extended to other infectious models with other target animal species

In-host evolution of Yersinia enterocolitica during a chronic human infection

International audienceBacteria exhibit remarkable adaptability in response to selective pressures encountered during infection and antibiotic treatment. We characterize four Yersinia enterocolitica clonal isolates from successive bacteremia episodes that evolved within an elderly patient over 14 years. Their common evolution is characterized by a genome size reduction resulting in the loss of about a hundred genes and a so far undescribed deletion in the DNA gyrase gene gyrA conferring quinolone resistance. Third-generation cephalosporin resistance of the last isolate correlates with a truncation of OmpF in synergy with an increased production of BlaA and AmpC β-lactamases. A strong proteome remodeling of the isolates reveals a perturbed stringent response, as well as impaired metabolism which substantiate their severe growth defects in vitro, accounting for antibiotics tolerance and possibly therapeutic failure. This study documents previously unreported genetic and phenotypic changes associated with in-host adaptation of a pathogenic Yersinia species under antibiotic pressure

    No full text

    No full text
