POLITICAL VIOLENCE AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN THE NORTH - CENTRAL ZONE OF NIGERIA
The Nigerian political system is marked by divisions along ethnic, class and religious lines. Deliberate manipulation of these primordial identity symbols to gain political advantage in an electoral contest has been a recurring phenomenon in Nigerian politics. This study examined political violence and socio-economic development in the North-Central Zone of Nigeria. Survey research design was employed for the study; both primary and secondary data were used in the study. Primary data were collected from respondents through focus group discussion and interview. The study adopts the political economy approach. It revealed that political violence in North-Central Nigeria is central to the contestation for political and economic resources through the manipulation of indigene/settler syndrome. The study also revealed that the political conflicts in the region have claimed many lives and properties and has displaced many people in the region during the period under investigation. Political conflicts in the zone have threatened peace and security which are prerequisite for socio-economic development. In terms of resolving political conflicts in the zone, government has employed two main measures; setting of judiciary panel of inquiry and deployment of security personnel to the affected communities. However, these measures have yielded little success as most of the recommendations of the panels of inquiry are not implemented and consequently perpetrators are never punished to serve as deterrent to others. The study recommends among others that; there is a strong need for good governance to arrest these perennial problems; punishment of the perpetrators of political violence; there is need to address the problem of citizenship rights in Nigeria through the constitutional approach and creation of ranches to resolve the problem between farmers and herders in the region.POLITICAL VIOLENCE AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMEN
EFFECTS OF INCORPORATION OF CRUDE EXTRACTS FROM NEEM (Azadirachta indica) AND WIREWEED (Sida acuta) LEAVES ON OXIDATIVE STABILITY AND SENSORY ATTRIBUTES OF SELECTED EDIBLE OILS IN NIGERIA
The antioxidant activities of neem (Azadirachta indica) and wireweed (Sida acuta) ethanolic leaf extracts’ effectiveness in the oxidative stabilization of soybean oil, groundnut oil and crude palm oils at extended (6 months) and accelerated (7days at 70° C) storage were determined. The ethanolic extracts of the neem and wireweed leaves were prepared. The extracts were screened for the presence of phytochemicals and the §>hytochemical content were determined. The chemical compounds and the functional groups of the compounds were identified. The extracts were incorporated into soybean, [groundnut and palm oils at 100, 200, 400 and 800 mg/L and the storage properties on the oils were assessed. The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) identified nineteen and twenty-seven compounds in the neem and wireweed extracts respectively. Ethanolic extracts of the neem leaf extract showed the presence and quantitation of Phenolics (131.850tO.55 pg/mL), flavonoids (6624.920±4.670 pg/mL); tannins (450.224±0.808 pg/mL), glycoside (9.623±0.172%) and alkaloids (2.192±0.006%); while the wireweed extract showed the presence of Phenolics (27102.365±10.189 pg/mL), |Flavonoids (1024.783±5.569 pg/mL), Tannins (9040.142±8.794 pg/mL), glycoside (7.953±0.128 %), Steroids (2.025±0.001 %) and alkaloids (13.745±0.281 %). The extracts exhibited antioxidant activity lower but comparable to that of Butylated hydroxyl toluene (BHT) which were analysed by the FRAP, DPPH, ORAC and (3-carotene linoleic antioxidant assays. The free fatty acid, peroxide value, anisidine value, Totox value, saponification value, colour, specific gravity and refractive index of the oils increased while the iodine value significantly decreased (p<0.05) on storage. All samples were generally acceptable and the sensory properties of the oils did not change on storage. The Azadirachta indica and Sida acuta leaf extract stabilised the vegetable oils during storage. These findings show that Azadirachta indica and Sida acuta leaf extract are rich sources of natural antioxidants that can be used for the stabilization of vegetable oils in the food Processing industries.EFFECTS OF INCORPORATION OF CRUDE EXTRACTS FROM NEEM (Azadirachta indica) AND WIREWEED (Sida acuta) LEAVE
POPULAR THEATRE AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION IN NIGERIA: THE TIV-JUKUN EXPERIENCE
The desire to curb the intermittent ethnic conflicts found to be very rampant in a time when most societies have gotten to a very high height of civilization through the participatory drama is the primary concern of this project. To this extent it is one amongst the many measures taken sofar by stakeholders in the management of the Taraba, Nasarawa and Benue ethnic conflicts. Consequently, chapter one introduces the concept of ethnic-political crisis, it further advances reasons to authenticate this work and enumerate ways of achieving the set goals and the historical parameters of the target communities*. The next chapter which is chapter two, deals with reviews of literatures, it treats indepthly, the meaning and definition of ethnic political crisis, theories of conflicts and instability, a Historical analysis of Tiv and the Jukuns crisis and the functionality of popular drama as a viable approach to the project, thereby setting the basis for the workability of this tool. Chapter three does a totalitarian study on how the tool works and so it comprises of the presentation of field-data collected from the workshop conducted. It also discusses the methodology via which conflicts can be controlled. Chapter four tries to examine the experiences required as indicated in the methodology, this include; the organisation of the workshop, analysis of findings at the performances, and discussions of these findings. Chapter five, which is also the final chapter, deals with the culmination of all that has been argued in the previous chapters, it summarizes, concludes and suggests ways via v which popular drama can curb conflicts.POPULAR THEATRE AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION IN NIGERI
EFFECT OF SUSTAINABILITY REPORTING ON FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE OF LISTED OIL AND GAS FIRMS IN NIGERIA
This study examined the effect of sustainability reporting on the financial performance of listed oil and gas firms in Nigeria between 2013 to 2017. The study used environmental reporting index, social reporting index and economic reporting index as measures of sustainability reporting while financial performance was proxied by return on assets (ROA). The study employed the expost facto design to actualize its objectives. Secondary data was collected from audited financial statements of the sampled oil and gas firms via content analysis. Panel data regression techniques were carried out and the results show a significant relationship between economic reporting and financial performance of the sampled firms. The results further reveal that, environmental reporting and social reporting have no significant relationship with the financial performance of listed oil and gas firms in Nigeria. Based on the findings, the study concludes that, corporate responsibilities are philanthropic activities hence a charge against profit but firms should continue discharging and reporting these activities so as to remain legitimate to operate in the society. Arising from the findings, the study recommends that, Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria and other financial regulatory bodies in Nigeria should advocate for corporate responsibilities to be a mandatory disclosure so as to compel firms that neglect corporate responsibilities to be sustainable by carrying out corporate responsibility activities and reporting same.EFFECT OF SUSTAINABILITY REPORTING ON FINANCIAL PERFORMANC
ASSESSMENT OF MOTIVATION AND PERFORMANCE AMONG THE STAFF OF FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTER MAKURDI
This study assessed the attitude to work of the Staff of Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi, Benue State. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. A total of 257 staff comprising 138 males and 119 females were randomly selected from the hospital. Data were collected from the participants through a structured questionnaire and Focused Group Discussion (FGD) that were designed to elicit information on demographic data, motivation and performance of the staff. Descriptive statistics involving frequencies and simple percentages were used to summarize the demographic data and answer research questions. The independent t-test was used to test the hypothesis that there is no significant difference in level of performance between staff who are motivated and those who are not. It was found from the study that most of the staff had negative attitude towards their work. Factors responsible for the negative attitude were found to include poor allowances, lack of facilities, poor management, hazardous work environment and lack of staff training. There is a significant difference in level of performance between staff who were motivated and those who are not (P<.05). The study concludes that motivation is imperative in enhancing staff work attitude and consequently the performance and quality of productivity of employees. he study recommends that managers needs to always make performance appraisal of their staff from time to time in order to keep abreast of the level of productivity of the staff at any given point in time.ASSESSMENT OF MOTIVATION AND PERFORMANC
EFFECT OF AUDIT QUALITY ON MARKET PERFORMANCE OF SELECTED LISTED COMPANIES IN NIGERIA
This study investigates the effect of audit quality on market performance of selected listed companies in Nigeria. Audit quality is characterised by Audit Firm Size (AFS), Audit Fees (AF), Audit Opinion (AO), and Audit Tenure (AT).The study also takes into cognizance the moderating role of audit committee financial expertise in ensuring audit quality and enhancing market performance and thus interact audit committee financial expertise with Audit Firm Size (AC*AFS) and audit fees (AC*AF). Market performance is measured by market price per share (MPS) and Tobin’s Q. The study used panel research design, and the data for the study were obtained from audited annual report of 44 listed companies selected under non-financial sector in Nigeria for the period of 7years (2011-2017) with a total of 308 observations. Multiple regression analysis was used for data analysis. Using fixed effect model, findings show that audit quality has insignificant negative effect on market performance of listed consumer goods companies in Nigeria through market price per share but significant effect through Tobin’s Q. Specifically, AO, has significant effect on MPS. While audit opinion (AO) and audit tenure (AT) have significant effect on Tobin’s Q, all other variables including the moderator variable AC have no significant effect on any of the performance measures. The study recommends that regulatory authorities should put in place disciplinary measures and enforce them to ensure that objective and realistic opinion is provided by auditors and all members of audit committee should be financial experts since audit quality is seen to have significant effect on market performance of listed companies in Nigeria.EFFECT OF AUDIT QUALITY ON MARKET PERFORMANC
IMPACT OF ACCOUNTING ETHICS ON FINANCIAL REPORTING QUALITY OF SELECTED FIRMS IN BENUE STATE, NIGERIA
The study examines the effect of ethics on the financial reporting quality of listed companies in Nigeria. The researcher used both primary and secondary sources from a sample of 92 respondents obtained by the use of a well-structured questionnaire. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, simple percentage and the relationship between the variables of the model was tested using multiple regression analysis with Ordinary Least Square (OLS) framework using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 23.0. The result of the regression analysis shows that a positive and statistically significant (p0.05) and in line with a priori expectation. A negative relationship exists between ethics proxied by Professional behavior (PROFBEH) and Financial Reporting Quality (FRPQ) of listed Companies and the relationship is statistically significant (p<0.05) and in line with a priori expectation. The study concludes that the application of ethics by preparers of financial statements should be prioritized since the goal of financial reporting is to provide useful information for decision making. It was recommended among others that, improved monitoring and enforcement by the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria and other regulatory bodies, to ensure strict compliance with the provisions of the financial reporting framework issued by the International Reporting Standards, will enhance the reporting quality of firms.IMPACT OF ACCOUNTING ETHNICS OF FINANCIAL REPORTIN
EFFECT OF TAX REVENUE ON NIGERIAN ECONOMIC GROWTH
This study empirically examined the effect of tax revenue (proxied by petroleum profit tax, company income tax, custom and excise duty and value added tax) on the economic growth of Nigeria (proxied by real gross domestic product). The study adopts the ex-post facto research design in the investigation. Time series data used for the study was sourced from CBN statistical bulletin from the period 2002-2017. Descriptive statistics and regression analysis techniques were used in the analysis of data. Findings from the study revealed an insignificant contribution of Petroleum profit tax (PPT), company income tax, custom and excise duty (CED) and value added tax (VAT) to the real gross domestic product (GDP) of Nigeria. In view of the findings of this study, the study recommends among others the need for the federal government of Nigeria to create an enabling environment that will enhance the effective collection of total tax revenue accruable from the oil industry. Such measure could include a speedy passage and implementation of the petroleum industry bill as well as curbing of corruption inherent in the petroleum industry.EFFECT OF TAX REVENU
A STYLISTIC STUDY OF BEN OKRI'S THE FAMISHED ROAD, DANGEROUS LOVE AND IN ARCADIA
This thesis focuses on the stylistic study of three of Ben Okri's prose fiction, The Famished Road, Dangerous Love and In Arcadia. With the use of Holiday's systemic functional theory as a framework, this study deploys linguistic tools, that is, lexis, syntax, phonology, and pragmatic/literary devices to provide meaningful interpretation for the texts. In chapter one, the study highlights the background to the study and the framework for analysis of the study, while chapter two focuses on the review of related literature. Chapter three contains the application of the framework for analysis on The , Famished Road, chapter four, the application of the framework for analysis on Dangerous Love, while in chapter five, In Arcadia is studied, based on the , framework for analysis. Chapter six is the summary and conclusion of the study. The study finds out that, Okri employs the use of language both at the metaphoric and surface levels, to expose social ills, accompanied by low moral standard of the people, in the society. The study also discovers that, the modernist tradition is well-established in the novels, and this, Okri combines with naturalism.STUDY OF BEN OKRI'S THE FAMISHED ROAD, DANGEROUS LOVE AND IN ARCADI
STYLISTIC ANALYSIS OF POSITIVE REPORTING AND COMMUNICATION IN THE FACE OF DISASTERS
This thesis explores positive reporting as a stylistically and linguistically prominent feature of news reports on disasters in Nigeria’s broadcast media. Thirty-five news stories on different kinds of disaster were purposively sampled from radio stations from the six geo-political zones of the country. Using Agenda Setting and foregrounding theories, as well as theoretical perspectives derivable from Systemic Functional Linguistics model, the study analysed the news stories in line with accepted checklist of stylistic features of media texts. The analysis was from word to phrase and sentence levels to determine where the news story writer stands. The findings show that news stories on disasters are framed by journalists and media houses in a positive manner to mitigate their potential negative and psychological impact on the victims, the listener and the public. They do that by foregrounding linguistic elements in the news stories which serve to downgrade the negative elements which may foster emotional and psychological trauma or make the authorities appear as doing little or nothing before the public. In order to promote positive reporting in broadcast media, it is suggested that journalists should file news reports on disasters which avoid graphic details and sensationalism.STYLISTIC ANALYSIS OF POSITIVE REPORTIN
