“Who is Gyges?” once again: assessing the Carian connections of the first Mermnad king of Lydia

    No full text
International audienceBased on hints provided by Joseph Wells nearly a century ago, an ample review of the sources concerning the life of Gyges, the renowned usurper who established the Mermnad dynasty of Lydia, is undertaken in order to assess his foreignness. The review reveals strong connections with Carians and with the ethnically mixed lower valleys of the rivers Maeander and Kaystros. Therefore, Gyges might be envisaged either as a Carian mercenary serving in the royal bodyguard of Lydia before his usurpation, or, more probably, as a Lydian aristocrat coming from the aforementioned region and eventually having strong kinship ties to Carians

Diagnostic de la destination Nord-Pas-de-Calais: UNE ANALYSE A PARTIR DE LA MODELISATION DU SYSTEME TOURISTIQUE REGIONAL

Mémoire de recherche réalisé au sein du LARSH, sous la direction de Sylvain Petit (PhD)This paper proposes a diagnosis of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais tourism destination through the Regional Tourism System Model developed by François de Grandpré (2009), with a modification in the partition. This dissertation introduces the notion of Homogeneous Recreational Spaces (ERH), which are smaller than the Homogeneous Tourist Spaces (ETH) of the MTR and aimed at a target more familiar with the territory than outsiders. The author starts from two observations: the first is the lack of a tourism model on a sub-national or even sub-regional scale in the economic literature. The second reflects the fact that, although residents, these potential visitors do not know the destination that forms their usual environment; it is then necessary to implement internal and regional promotion policies, and to maintain a relationship between the resident and his heritage. The last part of this paper proposes an analysis of the competitiveness of destinations, using the TOPSIS multi-criteria decision method, in order to observe the efficiency of the destinations of Nord-Pas-de-CalaisLe présent mémoire propose un diagnostic de la destination touristique du Nord-Pas-de-Calais à travers la Modélisation du système Touristique Régional développée par François de Grandpré (de Grandpré F. , 2009), en y apportant une modification au niveau du découpage.

Tolerance analysis of photonic crystal substrate used in spectrometer-free photonic crystal enhanced microscopy

    No full text
We performed a tolerance analysis of a photonic crystal (PC) substrate used in spectrometer-free photonic crystal enhanced microscopy (SFPCEM). SFPCEM is a simplified version of photonic crystal enhanced microscopy and is used for viewing nanoparticles without an expensive spectrometer or a scanning stage. We varied various structural parameters of the PC substrate and determined the change in its spectral behavior in order to find out the tolerance and sensitivity of its final performance to the parameters. We also analyzed the incident light angle dependency of the PC substrate, and in an SFPCEM observation of a nanoparticle, it caused the image of a nanoparticle to be stretched. The tolerance analysis may help to optimize the PC substrate for observing nanoparticles more clearly in SFPCEM and provides the permissible fabrication error boundary for reasonable performance

A Journey into the Multifaceted Universe of Coordinates Change, Basis Transformation, Dual Spaces, and Invariance

    No full text
The present work aims as developing, in a progressive manner, several concepts from linear and multilinear algebra that are progressively integrated from basic operations up to rudiments of tensors. The covered subjects include brief historical remarks, the key concept of linearity, unit conversion, change of variables and coordinates, inner product, bases and their transformation, dual spaces and co-vectors, Einstein notation, invariance, and some rudiments of tensors. Several graphic illustrations and diagrams of the covered concepts and methods, as well as numeric case-examples have been included in order to contribute to consolidate the presented material
