    MEDPRAT-SEL: Medical Resource Set Selector Searching High-Dimensionality Space

    NASA Human Research Program's (HRP) next generation risk model closes the loop on medical risk and resource evaluation, providing researchers with a tool to assess and choose capabilities scientifically. The Medical Extensible Dynamic Probabilistic Risk Assessment Tool (MEDPRAT) simulator (SIM) evaluates resources in terms of medical benefit, such as reduced crew quality time lost (QTL), vs. cost, in mass or volume. The MEDPRAT resource set selector (SEL) searches the space of resource benefits v. cost, closing a feedback loop around the simulator, thus selecting resource sets with best benefit for cost. We discuss the design and results of the resource set selector. NASA HRP's emphasis on scientific assessment of risk, PRA, has led to the Cross-cutting Computational Modeling Project (CCMP)

    We present the European Russia Drought Atlas (ERDA) that covers the East European Plain to the Ural Mountains from 14002016 CE. Like the Old World Drought Atlas (OWDA) for the Euro-Mediterranean region, the ERDA is a one-half degree gridded reconstruction of summer Palmer Drought Severity Indices estimated from a network of annual tree-ring chronologies. Ensemble point-by-point regression is used to generate the ERDA with the identical protocols used for developing the OWDA. Split calibration/validation tests of the ERDA indicate that it has significant skill over most of its domain and is much more skillful than the OWDA where they overlap in the western part of ERDA domain. Comparisons to historical droughts over European Russia additionally support the ERDAs overall validity. The ERDA has been spatially smoothed and infilled using a local regression method to yield a spatially complete drought atlas back to 1400 CE. EOF analysis indicates that there are three principal modes of hydroclimatic variability in the ERDA. After Varimax rotation, these modes correlate significantly with independent climate data sets extending back to the late nineteenth century in a physically interpretable way and relate to atmospheric circulation dynamics of droughts and heatwaves over European Russia based on more recent instrumental data

    OMI Measurements of Bromine Monoxide and Implications for Missing Sources of Polar Bromine in GEOS-Chem

    The OMI satellite instrument provides total column measurements of bromine monoxide (BrO) with daily global coverage. Reactive bromine compounds (Br and BrO) catalytically destroy ozone in both the stratosphere and troposphere. The current emission scheme of brominated source gases in the GEOS-Chem chemical transport model well represents the stratospheric burden of bromine. However, halogen research in GEOS-Chem has largely focused on the influence of halogens on the tropospheric oxidative capacity. In the troposphere, the distribution of brominated compounds is more variable and significant uncertainties remain in the chemical processes governing the sources and sinks of reactive bromine compounds. In this study, we use GEOS-Chem simulated stratospheric columns of BrO to separate the tropospheric signal of BrO from the OMI total column measurements. The resulting tropospheric BrO columns are used to identify seasonal and regional anomalies in tropospheric BrO not currently represented in GEOS-Chem. In particular, periods of elevated tropospheric BrO during polar spring are observable by OMI, and past studies have connected these so-called "bromine explosion" events to near complete removal of surface ozone. Due to significant uncertainties in the springtime polar source of reactive bromine, many global models, including GEOS-Chem, do not simulate these tropospheric ozone depletion events. Consequently, OMI-based tropospheric columns of BrO are useful tool for investigating the impact of bromine explosion events on tropospheric ozone depletion episodes as well as background air quality
