Near Field Probe Measurements in the Plume of a NEXT Ion Thruster
Due to the extremely long lifetime and ground testing complications, such as facility backpressure effects, modeling is a necessary tool for validating mission lifetime requirements. Both NASA's Glenn Research Center and Jet Propulsion Laboratory have developed lifetime validation models for the NEXT ion thruster. The largest uncertainties in these models are due to unknown plasma properties, such as plasma potential, that occur very near to the grid. Previous studies have made measurements in the mid to far field. Here, we make very near field measurements of the plasma properties in the ion beam within 0.1 thruster radii of the grid using various probes. Emissive and triple Langmuir probes are swept through the plume to spatially resolve plasma potential, electron temperature and ion density very near to the grid. The goal is to provide refined inputs to the lifetime modeling efforts and increase the accuracy of the models
NEXT Single String Integration Tests in Support of the Double Asteroid Redirection Test Mission
A system integration test has been performed utilizing a prototype model NEXT ion thruster, an engineering model power processing unit, and a laboratory model command and data handling system. The objectives of the test were to: a) verify that the integrated system meets performance requirements, b) demonstrate that the integrated system is functional across the anticipated thermal, power processor, and Xe propellant ranges for the DART mission, and to c) evaluate fault detection and operation of the command and data handling system. Measurements made during this test included: thruster performance, PPU input voltages, PPU electrical and thermal telemetry, software states, and fault flags. Additionally, a far-field electrostatic probe diagnostic was used to infer relative changes in the thrust vector across the various propellant flow splits. This manuscript presents the results of these tests, which include integrated ion propulsion system demonstrations of performance, details on the execution of DART flight algorithms, and software fault handling

Exobiology Through the Lens of Constraint-Based Metabolic Modeling
A focus of many astrobiology questions resides on the interplay between biochemistry and geochemistry. This biotic-abiotic interface is intimately connected to habitability. Computational systems biology provides a paradigm to characterize this interface. Here we describe the application of constraint-based metabolic modeling to characterize photosynthetic microorganisms inhabiting a modern analog to the Earths primordial ocean. Biochemistry is captured in a metabolic network that is converted to a mathematical model. Geochemistry results in constraints that limit the capabilities of the metabolic network. The combination of the two within a single framework can elucidate the co-evolution of life and the environment
NASA GIBS and Worldview: Bringing 20 Years of Terra Data into View
For nearly 10 years, the NASA Global Imagery Browse Services (GIBS) and Worldview interactive mapping site have provided users full resolution visualizations of Terra land, cryosphere, ocean, and atmosphere science parameters available within hours of acquisition. Over that time, GIBS and Worldview have expanded their Terra visualization suite to include even more parameters covering the entire mission of science data. Users can now view daily visualizations of nearly 50 near-real time and over 125 science quality science parameters from Terra instruments. These visualizations provide a unique capability for a broad user base to interact and discover the wealth of information sense by instruments on the Terra platform. By viewing Terra-based visualizations in a single location, users can correlate retrievals across instruments. Additionally, GIBS and Worldview include visualizations from many other platforms, allowing for an even greater data discovery capability. The GIBS and Worldview teams continue to work with Terra instrument science teams to add more visualized layers, as well as supporting visualization updates as the data is continually improved. Additionally, the GIBS interfaces and Worldview site are actively working on improved visualization functionality, including vector- and granule/swath-based products, to better address the expanding needs of its user community. This presentation will focus on an overview of existing and future visualization products and capabilities that have supported, and will support, a broad use of Terra data in science, media, and application communities
Modeling Uncertainty in Time and Fuel Benefit Estimation for TASAR Operational Evaluation
The Traffic Aware Strategic Aircrew Requests concept aims to reduce weather-induced delays, improve route efficiency, and efficiently share route modification options by combining onboard avionics data, Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast data, and broadband internet data to generate optimal, traffic-compatible trajectory changes based on real-time traffic and weather data. Time and fuel benefits due to use of the Traffic Aware Planner (TAP) software can be estimated by taking the difference in predicted flight time and fuel usage before and after a TAP-inspired trajectory change is completed. Although TAPs optimization algorithm predicts flight and fuel usage based on the current flight route and weather data, it does not account for possible air traffic controller-initiated trajectory changes, reroutes due to sudden weather changes, or other pilot/controller actions that may occur during flight. This paper introduces an approach for quantifying the uncertainty in estimated time and fuel benefits
