The process, called nkpu, entailed being isolated from the community while the girls did no work but devoted their time to learning from select village women how to be beautiful, both physically and morally. To the Yoruba people, stools were an important attribute of kings and important chiefs, who defined their power by the display of prestige objects during important ceremonies. Stools were among the most important of these objects.
This magnificent stool is a masterpiece of Yoruba wood carving. The overall form of the work retains the shape of the tree trunk from which it was cut. Despite the fact that it has been somewhat hollowed out inside, it remains strong and sturdy. Such standing, female figures were called \u27Nyeleni\u27 oder \u27Jo-Nyeleni\u27 (this translates as \u27small, beautiful girl\u27) by the Bambara people in the Mali savanna. Decreasing The Prevalence Of Musculoskeletal Injuries Among Registered Nurses In A Long-Term Acute Care Hospital: A Quality Improvement Project
Musculoskeletal injuries are prevalent among nurses comparable to other industries, presumed to be hazardous such as manufacturing and construction industries. Nurses’ work requirements are dynamic, challenging, and physically demanding and require significant coordination. Research has shown that nurses continue to sustain musculoskeletal injuries while handling patients, even with great emphasis on patient handling best practices. This inquiry was guided by the following question: how will an educational intervention impact the rate of musculoskeletal injuries among long-term acute care nurses with patient handling and mobility responsibilities compared with pre-intervention rates after 12 weeks? The project explored factors that influence nurses’ safety, identified the knowledge gap in practice, and provided educational interventions to decrease musculoskeletal injuries among nurses caused by patient handling and mobility activities. The primary causes of musculoskeletal injuries are activities such as patient transfers, lifting, boosting, and repositioning.
The project included a literature review of twenty (20) peer-reviewed articles: 8 articles on the effectiveness of educational interventions; 3 on the efficacy of programs introduced in nursing practice, such as safe patient handling and mobility programs; 4 on the use of ergonomic principles; and 5 that provided recommendations. The health belief model was adopted as a theoretical framework. The project utilized a pre-post-intervention design. The data sources included both primary and secondary sources. The investigator used surveys to collect primary data and obtained secondary data from the Occupational Health Department in two occasions; before the educational interventions and compared with data collected 12 weeks after. The analysis utilized the Chi-squared test of independence. The analysis section utilized descriptive statistics. The results were valuable, indicating the need for ongoing evidence-based educational interventions to decreased musculoskeletal injuries from patient handling and mobility activities among nurses
Electrostatic energy of interaction between uniformly charged hemispherical surfaces
The purpose of this study is to gain insights on the nature of the electrostatic energy of interaction between two uniformly charged hemispherical surfaces with constant surface charge density. The present system of these two interacting bodies represents a very difficult problem to solve since hemispherical surfaces lack the spherical symmetry of a uniformly charged spherical surface or a solid sphere counterpart. For this reason, an exact analytical calculation of the electrostatic interaction energy is not possible for an arbitrary orientation. However, this work shows that analytical results are possible for scenarios where the system of the two interacting hemispherical surfaces manifests some form of inherent symmetry. We identify such situations where combination of suitable mathematical tools appropriate for the axial symmetry together with transformations that apply to a spherical system of coordinates can reduce the difficulty of the problem. We show that there are some special cases where this very difficult integral problem can be reduced to a simpler one of summation of an infinite series. The approach is illustrated by showing explicitly the calculation of the interaction energy between the two uniformly charged hemispherical surfaces when they are brought together so that they are touching each other across the “equator”
Patterns of Adults with Low Literacy Skills Interacting with an Intelligent Tutoring System
A common goal of Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) is to provide learning environments that adapt to the varying abilities and characteristics of users. This type of adaptivity is possible only if the ITS has information that characterizes the learning behaviors of its users and can adjust its pedagogy accordingly. This study investigated an intelligent tutoring system with computer agents (AutoTutor) designed to improve comprehension skills in adults with low reading literacy. One goal of this study was to classify adults into different clusters based on their behavioral patterns (accuracy and response time to answer questions) while they interacted with AutoTutor to help them improve their reading comprehension skills. A second goal was to investigate whether adults’ behaviors were associated with different reading components. A third goal was to assess improvements in reading comprehension skills, based on psychometric tests, of different clusters of readers. Performance on AutoTutor was collected in a targeted 100-hour hybrid intervention for adult readers (n = 252) that included both human teachers and the AutoTutor system. The adults’ average accuracy and response time in AutoTutor were used to cluster the adults into four categories: higher performers (comparatively fast and accurate), conscientious readers (slow but accurate), under-engaged readers (fast at the expense of somewhat lower accuracy) and struggling readers (slow and inaccurate). Two psychometric tests of comprehension were used to assess comprehension. Gains in comprehension scores were highest for conscientious readers, lowest for struggling readers, with higher performing readers and under-engaged readers in between. The results provide guidance to enhance the adaptivity of AutoTutor
(SI10-124) Inverse Reconstruction Methodologies: A Review
The three-dimensional reconstruction problem is a longstanding ill-posed problem, which has made enormous progress in the field of computer vision. This field has attracted increasing interest and demonstrated an impressive performance. Due to a long era of increasing evolution, this paper presents an extensive review of the developments made in this field. For the three dimensional visualization, researchers have focused on the developments of three dimensional information and acquisition methodologies from two dimensional scenes or objects. These acquisition methodologies require a complex calibration procedure which is not practical in general. Hence, the requirement of flexibility was much needed in all these methods. Due to this emerging factors, many techniques were presented. The methodologies are organized on the basis of different aspects of the three dimensional reconstruction like active method, passive method, different geometrical shapes, etc. A brief analysis and comparison of the performance of these methodologies are also presented
