    Variation of the elliptical Fermi surface for a two-dimensional electron gas with anisotropic mass

    We consider a two-dimensional electron gas in the thermodynamic (bulk) limit. It is assumed that the system consists of fully spin-polarized (spinless) electrons with anisotropic mass. We study the variation of the shape of the expected elliptical Fermi surface as a function of the density of the system in presence of such form of internal anisotropy. To this effect, we calculate the energy of the system as well as the optimum ellipticity of the Fermi surface for two possible liquid states. One corresponds to the standard system with circular Fermi surface while the second one represents a liquid anisotropic phase with a tunable elliptical deformation of the Fermi surface that includes the state that minimizes the kinetic energy. The results obtained shed light on several possible scenarios that may arise in such a system. The competition between opposing tendencies of the kinetic energy and potential energy may lead to the stabilization of liquid phases where the optimal elliptical deformation of the Fermi surface is non-obvious and depends on the density as well as an array of other factors related to the specific values of various parameters that characterize the system

    Comparison between chlorhexidine and povidone-iodine solutions for flushing the preputial cavity on penile mucosa and semen bacterial counts in beef bulls

    The objectives of the present study were to estimate the number of colonies forming units (CFU) from penile mucosa and semen, the effect of two antiseptic solutions used to flush the preputial cavity to reduce the bacterial counts from those sites, and compare them. Six clinically healthy bulls between 15 and 16 mo old declared satisfactory potential breeders were used. A prospective, randomized, and controlled cross-over design was performed, in which each bull was first sampled from the penile mucosa and semen without treatment (control group) and 24 h later, after antiseptic preputial flushing (treated group). In the treated group, the preputial area was cleaned, the preputial hair was cut, urination was stimulated, prepuce area was scrubbed twice, and the preputial cavity was flushed with either 1% of povidone-iodine solution (POI; 500 mL) or 0.05% chlorhexidine digluconate (CHG; 500 mL), maintained for 10 min. Then, the preputial cavity was emptied and flushed with 500 mL of sterile saline solution. Next, the accessory sexual glands were massaged per rectum. Finally, protrusion, erection, and ejaculation were obtained by electroejaculation, and samples from penile mucosa and semen were collected for microbiological culture. The number of CFU was determined for each sample by enumerate total aerobic bacteria using Standard Plate Surface Count cultured for 48 h. In the first replicate, half of the bulls were treated with CHG, and the other half were treated with POI. After 58.8 ± 5.3 days (x ± SD) of wash-out period, the treatments were reverted, and the same protocols were applied again. In the control group, the median number of CFUs from the penile mucosa was 750,000 (range from 60,000 to 1,800,000) and the median number of CFUs in semen was 8,000,000 (700,000-45,000,000). The CFU in semen was higher than the penile mucosa (P = 0.005). Both antiseptic solutions reduced the median number of CFUs on the penile mucosa to 915 (P = 0.002) and in semen to 1,680 (P = 0.002). The antiseptic effect on the penile mucosa was higher for CHG solution (490) than for POI solution (6,650; P = 0.05). The antiseptic effect on semen of CHG was also greater (200) than for the POI solution (31,000; P = 0.05). It can be concluded that the median number of CFU was higher in semen compared with penile mucosa, and flushing the preputial cavity either with 0.05% CHG or 1% POI maintained for 10 min reduced the number of CFUs from penile mucosa and semen.     Utilizing Game-Based Learning to Promote Mental Health Advocacy in Black and Brown Communities

    The aim of this project was to explore the effectiveness of video games and game-based learning as a means of mental health advocacy within People of Color (POC) and their communities. Research has shown that within black and brown communities, a heightened stigma is attached to the discussion of mental health, often preventing those who are affected from seeking treatment. This unwillingness to accept and care for mental illness within communities of color is highly detrimental, especially in the context of conditions such as Alzheimer’s or dementia, where African-Americans and Hispanics are at a significantly higher risk of developing these conditions. Despite higher risks they face lower rates of diagnosis and a general lack in understanding of the effects of dementia and how to provide proper care. These factors can place strain on those providing care to afflicted family members. Using the concept of game-based learning, I wanted to inform audiences, particularly POC, of the ways dementia affects our community by creating a 2D game demo meant to tackle the subject in an engaging and informative way. As part of the project, the demo was paired with an accompanying website and a survey that was issued to players following their completion of the game. Responses from the survey revealed that many found the chosen medium to be an effective means of relaying the struggles of mental illness and allowed them to gain a deeper understanding of the subject presented

    COVID-19 Vaccine Disparities and Attitudes

    The past couple of years have caused so much uncertainty and grief amidst the global pandemic. The goal of this study is to explore the attitudes behind COVID-19 vaccination to address the cause for vaccine disparities and help minimize health disparities in the United States. The study considers two multivariable regressions in SPSS of the social factors on vaccination status and vaccine confidence. This model studies the relationship between one’s ethnicity, race, education level, education specialization, household income, political ideology, and media source on vaccine confidence and vaccination status on an East Texas college campus. A campus-wide survey was conducted to explore the attitudes behind the COVID-19 vaccine. These survey questions provide reasoning from different demographic backgrounds, political ideologies, socioeconomic levels, etc. The survey results show that news sources, political ideology, and major have great effects on vaccination trust/hesitancy

    This paper aims to investigate the non-linear stability of the triangular libration point in the restricted three-body problem (R3BP). The model, we use for our problem consists of a primary body as a heterogeneous spheroid with N-layers having different densities of each layer and a secondary body as a point mass that is producing the modified Newtonian Potential. We determine the equation of motion of the smallest body which is under the influence of the above-mentioned perturbations and also influenced by Coriolis as well as Centrifugal forces and then evaluated the Lagrangian for the evaluated system of equations. Afterwards, we write the first and second-order normalization of the Hamiltonian of the problem. By implying KAM theorem and the techniques used by Bhatnagar and Hallan, we discuss the non-linear stability analytically

    (R1964) Solving Multi-Objective Linear Fractional Programming Problems via Zero-Sum Game

    This study presents a hybrid algorithm consisting of game theory and the first order Taylor series approach to find compromise solutions to multi-objective linear fractional programming (MOLFP) problems. The proposed algorithm consists of three phases including different techniques: in the first phase, the optimal solution to each LFP problem is found using the simplex method; in the second phase, a zero-sum game is solved to determine the weights of the objective functions via the ratio matrix obtained from a payoff matrix; in the last phase, fractional objective functions of the MOLFP problem are linearized using the 1st order Taylor series. A compromise solution is found by solving the single-objective LP problem constructed in the third phase by using the weights. This algorithm can provide compromise solutions to the problem by constructing different ratio matrices in the second phase. The novelty of this study is that the decision-makers can choose the most suitable solution for their strategy among the compromise solutions. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the efficiency of the algorithm

    In this paper, we study a class of compatimental epidemiological models consisting of Susceptible, Infected, and Removed (SIR) individuals with a perturbation factor or exterior effects such as noise, climate change, pollution, etc. We prove the existence and uniqueness of a limit cycle confined in a nonempty closed and convex set by relying on a recent result of Lobanova and Sadovskii. Moreover, we study the existence of Hopf and Bogdanov-Takens bifurcations by applying respectively Poincare-Andronov-Hopf bifurcation theorem and Bogdanov-Takens theorem. Eventually, using Scilab, we illustrate the validity of our results with numerical simulations and also interpret them

    Blurring The Border: Examining Strain Among Latino Youth Using Latinx General Strain Theory (LGST)

    Criminological research indicates the Latinx population disproportionality commits crime. Latinx youth represent nearly 30% of the juvenile justice system (State of Americas Children, 2020). In 2008, Pérez and colleagues examined ethnic-specific differences that affect Latinx in the strain delinquency relationship. The authors used Latinx General Strain Theory (LGST) to identify the distinctive strains Latinx experienced as a result of their unique socio-cultural and ethnic experiences. However, the impact police perceptions have on Latinx delinquency has yet to be fully identified (Isom Scott et al., 2021; Isom Scott et al., 2020; Thaxton & Agnew, 2018). This dissertation examined LGST by assessing the impact ethnic-specific strains, police perceptions, and traditional strains had on Latinx delinquency and status offenses. This study utilized four research questions: 1: Does acculturation strain impact the likelihood of Latinx youth committing status offenses and delinquency; 2: Does negative perceptions of police impact the likelihood of Latinx youth committing status offenses iv and delinquency; 3: Do negative emotions impact the likelihood of Latinx youth committing status offenses and delinquency; 4: Do traditional GST strains impact the likelihood of Latinx youth committing status offenses and delinquency. Utilizing the Gang Resistance Education Training Data (GREAT) set. This study examined multiple waves using negative binomial regression analysis to assess the impact traditionally, and ethnic-specific strains have on Latinx youth committing delinquency and status offenses. Results suggest Latinx youth born in the United States (e.g., acculturated) were more likely to report delinquency compared to Latinx youth born in another country. Having lower feelings of ethnic identity increased overall delinquency, and Latinx youth who reported negative perceptions of police also increased delinquency. Future research should examine more measures of police strain or police racial discrimination in the Latinx strain delinquency relationship

    Increasing support for alternatives to incarceration for drug use: is the brain disease model of addiction effective?

    The National Institute of Drug Addiction has promoted the Brain Disease Model of Addiction (BDMA) for several decades, believing it will have a positive impact on drug-related social policies. Per research, neither understanding nor accepting the BDMA positively influences social behavior and decision making related to decreased stigma or increased support for treatment and funding for substance use disorders. An alternative model, the Malleability Model, focuses on the changeability of psychopathology associated with psychiatric disorders, and is associated with decreased hopelessness and increased prognostic optimism. The Moral Weakness Model focuses on moral character as the reason for addiction and is associated with punitive responses to use disorders. The current study sought to identify whether Malleability values were more predictive of willingness to vote for harm reduction (HR) policies than BDMA and Moral values (H1); and if agreement with Malleability values were more predictive of willingness to fund such policies than agreement with BDMA and Moral values (H2). Contrary to hypotheses, results indicated the Malleability Model failed to predict votes and donations, while agreement with the Moral Weakness Model and conservative political affiliation was predictive of lower HR donations. Agreement with the BDMA did not reliably predict votes and donations to policies; the associations reflected were tenuous and should be interpreted with caution. Overall, results indicated the Malleability Model did not increase votes and donations to HR policies, while agreement with Moral Weakness Model and conservative affiliation consistently predicted votes and donations
