    Alleviating Power Line Congestion Through the Use of a Renewable Generation

    As the United States\u27 energy demand has grown substantially within the past few decades, the reliability of its electric grids has become even more pertinent. With millions of customers relying on having consistent electric power to fulfill their daily routines and necessary operations, electric power transmission congestion, or the overloading of the electric power transmission network, can be very costly and detrimental to the reliability of the network and the environment. Therefore, it is imperative to identify and implement methods of optimally controlling the power flows to limit transmission line congestion. Throughout recent decades, there has been an ever-increasing penetration of Renewable Energy Generation in the power grid. However, unlike in the past, where fossil fuel generating plants were mostly located in remote areas, and in the proximity of the source of energy, the most common of the renewable generations, such as solar power systems, are haphazardly sited close to the loads. This is due to the fact that energy from the sun can be harnessed almost everywhere. This unplanned siting of renewable generating systems aggravates the power distribution lines congestion that already exists due to the power distribution deregulation. This thesis presents a procedure that takes advantage of utilization and proper placement of Photovoltaic (PV) power systems to alleviate power line congestion. In this procedure, the base caseload flow, without the solar generating system, is performed on the distribution network. And the bus with the lowest voltage is identified; this low-voltage bus is indicative of congestion in the lines connecting the identified bus. A PV power system is then tied to that bus; the capacity of the PV generation is varied heuristically to determine the optimality that mitigates the congestion on the lines. The procedure is followed to test a 9-bus IEEE power system, and the results are presented. Keywords: Congestion management; Power line congestion; Renewable energy generation; Transmission line

    Impact Of Teamstepps Training On Teamwork Perception In Two Primary Care Clinics

    Background: Most healthcare delivery involves teams. After teamwork and communication breakdowns, poor patient care, errors, and inefficiencies follow. Employee engagement surveys from two Galveston County clinics showed concern with teamwork and value. TeamSTEPPS, a team training program, improved attitudes, knowledge, and outcomes, according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Purpose: The project examined how TeamSTEPPS training affected healthcare professionals’ and administrative employees at two Galveston County primary care clinics\u27 teamwork perspectives. PICOT Question: Among entire staff in two primary care clinics (P), what is the impact of TeamSTEPPS (I) on improving teamwork perception (O) comparing pre-post TeamSTEPPS Teamwork Perceptions Questionnaire (T-TPQ) results after three TeamSTEPPS training programs have been implemented (T)? Theoretical Framework: This project used the TeamSTEPPS framework to build methods, methodologies, and resources to complete each stage and collect data for the next level of teamwork enhancement. Methods: The T-TPQ measured teamwork perceptions of targeted participants at baseline and after three TeamSTEPPS training sessions. Data Analysis: Intellectus Statistics was utilized to evaluate the data. Two-tailed Wilcoxon signed rank tests were performed to determine the significance of pre- and post-intervention teamwork perceptions. Results: Pre-intervention T-TPQ survey median was 119.90. Post-intervention T-TPQ survey median were 151.97; V = 39.00, z = -3.735, and p = 0.001. TeamSTEPPS training dramatically enhanced staff teamwork perceptions. Conclusions: This DNP experiment verified TeamSTEPPS to improve primary care staff teamwork perceptions. Recommended Future Research: TeamSTEPPS research should investigate patient-safety culture and how teamwork perception affects patient outcomes and primary care settings.     (R2059) Modeling the Spread of Coronavirus with Self-protection and Quarantine Effect

    A nonlinear mathematical model to study the effect of transmission dynamics of COVID-19 virus in a population with variable size structure is proposed and analyzed. The model divides the total human population into five subclasses: susceptibles, self-protected susceptibles, infectives, quarantined infectives, and recovered population including a class representing cumulative density of coronavirus in the environmental reservoir. The model exhibits two equilibria, namely, the diseasefree and the endemic equilibrium. Model analysis reveals the global dynamics of the spread of COVID-19 is completely determined by the basic reproduction number. If basic reproduction number is greater than one, the endemic equilibrium is locally asymptotically stable and is globally asymptotically stable under certain conditions showing that the disease becomes endemic. It is found that the infective population can be decreased if the individuals from susceptible population self protect themselves and do not come in direct contact with viral density deposited on surfaces or airborne droplets accumulated in the environmental reservoir. However, if higher number of individuals from infective class are quarantined at home or hospital, the spread of the disease can further be slowed down. Numerical analysis of the model is also performed to investigate the influence of certain key parameters on the spread of the disease and to support the analytical results

    Effects Of Reporting Fever Sessions And Caresense On Fever Reporting By Gastrointestinal Cancer Patients Receiving Chemotherapy

    Patients with cancer who undergo chemotherapy are at risk of immune system compromise. Fever in a patient with cancer who receives chemotherapy can indicate presence of an infection. In patients with a compromised immune system, an infection requires immediate further evaluation and management. Thus, patients receiving chemotherapy must understand when to notify physicians of a fever for prompt evaluation and management. Purpose. This project aimed to increase the number of fevers gastrointestinal oncology patients receiving chemotherapy reported within 24 hours of detection to MyChart messaging, CareSense, or by calling the physician\u27s office. Methodology.All gastrointestinal oncology patients who underwent chemotherapy received a reporting fever instructional session by the nurse practitioner. They also received CareSense prompts via text message or email. New patients receiving chemotherapy were enrolled in CareSense at the same time the chemotherapy appointment was scheduled. Patients also received a CareSense handout and an after-visit summary. On days two and four post-chemotherapy, CareSense sent a text notification to ask the patient if they experienced a fever with a temperature ≥100.4°F. The patient’s selection of yes or no elicited a follow-up response. On day six post-chemotherapy, CareSense sent a patient satisfaction survey via text to assess whether the tool improved the patient\u27s knowledge about chemotherapy and recovery and whether the reminders were helpful. Data related to patient-reported fever and patient satisfaction were collected for three months and then analyzed. The project was designed to assess pre- and post-reporting effects of the fever instructional session and CareSense prompt notifications of fevers within 24 hours of detection using CareSense, MyChart messaging, or calls to the physician’s office. Fisher’s Exact Test of Independence was used to determine if there was an increase in the number of reported fevers following the intervention.     Design And Implementation Of A Renewable Energy Research Platform In The Power Generation

    Over the past century or two, the interest in energy efficiency, Renewable Energy Generation in the power grid, energy cost, environmental protection, cyber-security, and the development of electric vehicles (EV) technology have been increasing. A research study on air pollution regulations in the USA, Asia, and Europe, as well as other major countries, showed that fossil-fueled vehicles were chosen as the significant source of emissions that created air pollution, leading to the global warming crisis. The oil resources on the earth are decreasing, and the new discoveries of these resources are at a more sluggish stride than the increase in demand by the world population. Therefore, the need for an alternative source of energy is becoming extremely critical. This research discussed the design and implementation of a Renewable Energy (RE) generation platform, solar power generation system. The design analysis and computations employed the Newton Raphson load flow method, curve fitting, and other heuristics approaches. The design procedure is outlined in the body of the dissertation. The research study defined a RE platform consisting of a network of interconnected devices collaborating to produce clean energy employing real-time measurements. The important components of the designed platform are detailed in the dissertation. These are various parallel and series combinations of solar cells, dc to dc converters including Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT), that are required to fine tune the dc output of the solar cells to charge the batteries and to activate the dc to ac inverters, e-Gauge data loggers, communication networks, parallel and series batteries configurations, buses, breakers, and 200 Amp panels. The partial designed blueprint of the overall system is included in the dissertation. The designed system minimized losses due to shading of the PV and overloads, maintained voltage levels, increased reliability, decreased power outage occurrences, and improved power management. The daily data collected on the system through the designed communication network allows system operators to rapidly identify the best power management and security strategy against cyberattacks rapidly. The study also includes a working prototype to analyze crises condition, battery discharging and charging current, and implements a solution for solar efficiency.     Autoignition Of N-Decane Droplets In Varying Oxygen Concentrations Under Normal And Microgravity

    The present research investigates the autoignition of fiber-supported n-decane droplets rapidly inserted into a high-temperature oven using elevated pressure in normal and microgravity. The first and total induction times are measured during these experiments to show the dependence of the ignition process on ambient oxygen concentrations for a fixed ambient temperature and pressure. Normal alkanes can ignite in two stages when introduced into a hot environment under certain ambient conditions. There is first a cool-flame ignition (defined by the first induction time), followed by a hot-flame ignition (defined by the total ignition time). The normal and microgravity experimental results are compared to evaluate the role of buoyancy in the autoignition process. All experiments are conducted at ground-based research facilities at NASA Glenn Research Center (Cleveland, OH), including the Zero Gravity Facility (ZGF) for the microgravity testing. Droplet diameters are approximately 1.1 mm, with the oven temperature and pressure respectively 700 K and 3 atm for all experiments, and the oxygen mole fractions varied from 0.10 to 0.30. Recordings and observation produce the induction times by using high-speed shadowgraph images. The results show the independence of the oxygen mole fraction on the first induction time. They are consistent with the notion that the first induction time is primarily controlled by evaporation and mixing as the droplet enters the chamber. The characteristic times for these physical processes are much longer than the characteristic low-temperature chemical reaction time. The second induction time has a significant dependence on oxygen mole fraction. The second induction time strongly depends on the characteristic chemical kinetic time due to the low-temperature oxygen-addition reactions. The results show that at ambient oxygen mole fractions below 0.15 in normal gravity and 0.10 in microgravity, no hot flame ignition is observed for the initial droplet diameter. The induction times are slightly lower in microgravity when compared to normal gravity results. Additionally, the cool and hot flame starts closer to the droplet in microgravity. These results provide unique insights into the autoignition dynamics of a single, isolated fuel droplet and help to better the understanding of complex combustion processes in practical combustion systems.
