The impact of a defendant not testifying in a child sexual assault case
The present study examined the influence of the presence or absence of a defendant\u27s testimony and the strength of the prosecution\u27s evidence on mock juror perceptions of a defendant in a child sexual assault case. Community members (N = 311, 54.3% female) read a summary of a fictional trial in which a defendant allegedly sexually assaulted a child. The prosecution presented evidence from a detective in a weak case or a sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) in a strong case, and defendants either testified or did not testify. When the defendant did not testify, participants were either instructed to not allow the lack of testimony to affect their decision or were not given instructions about the defendant\u27s testimony. Judge\u27s instruction did not affect verdict, and the two no- testimony conditions were collapsed. Participants were significantly more likely to render guilty verdicts when there was strong evidence and when the defendant did not testify. Anger toward the defendant mediated the relationship between the defendant\u27s lack of testimony and guilty verdicts. When the defendant did not testify and jurors rendered guilty verdicts, cognitive network representations indicated that the defend-ant\u27s lack of testimony was central to the jurors\u27 perceptions of the case
Moderating Effect of Agreeableness on Coping Among Cancer Survivors: A Longitudinal Analysis
The current study examined interactions among Agreeableness, problem-focused coping (PFC), and emotional expression in predicting purpose in life and self-acceptance. The sample included 345 cancer survivors, who participated in the National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States (MIDUS) studies II and III. We found three-way interactions after statistically controlling for sex, age, level of educational attainment, years since cancer diagnosis, previous levels of purpose in life and self-acceptance, and the Big Five personality traits. Results indicate that, depending on the levels of Agreeableness, the effect of utilizing PFC and emotional expression after a cancer may vary

Parents’ perceptions of healthy eating practices in north-east trinidad
Aim: The purpose of this study was to explore perceptions, facilitators, and barriers to healthy eating behaviors among parents of primary school-aged children. Methods: A purposive sampling design was used to select parents of primary school children from four different communities in north-east Trinidad. They were recruited via the school system with letters containing the research purpose and background. Four focus group sessions were conducted between May and June 2013. Each focus group had an average of five participants and lasted for approximately 60 min. The participants were asked to define healthy eating, identify healthy foods, and describe their concerns regarding healthy eating. The interview questions were developed and validated by the research team members. The data were transcribed and analyzed for themes. Results: Twenty-three (N = 23) parents (78% female and 22% male) participated in the study. The participants define healthy foods as vegetables, starchy foods, porridge, tea, fiber, and foods low in fat. Parents also acknowledged that food cost, availability, parent’s inability to influence children to consume fruits and vegetables, and social barriers are some major challenges impeding healthy eating. Conclusion: Our study demonstrates that several barriers exist to healthy eating among primary school children in Trinidad. Community health professionals, school teachers, dietitians, and nutritionists need to play a more prominent role in teaching children and parents about the benefits of healthy eating. Future studies need to address the barriers to healthy eating. This might help to reduce the growing obesity prevalence in Trinidad
Estimating land surface variables and sensitivity analysis for CLM and VIC simulations using remote sensing products
Assessment of Land Surface Models (LSMs) at heterogeneous terrain and climate regimes is essential for understanding complex hydrological and biophysical parameterization. This study utilized the two LSMs, Community Land Model (CLM 4.0) and three layer Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC-3L), to estimate the interaction between land surface and atmosphere by means of energy fluxes including net radiation (RN), sensible heat flux (H), latent heat flux (LE), and ground heat flux (G). The modeled energy fluxes were analyzed at two sites: Freeman Ranch-2 (FR2) located in the lowland region of Texas (272 m), and Providence 301 (P301) located on the mountains of Sierra Nevada in California (2015 m) from 2003 to 2013. RN was underestimated by CLM with bias −25.06 W m−2 due to its snow hydrology scheme at P301. LE was overestimated by the VIC during summer precipitation and had a positive bias of 5.51 W m−2, whereas CLM showed a negative bias of −6.58 W m−2 at the FR2 site. G was considered as a residual term in CLM, which caused weak performance at P301, while VIC calculated G as a function of soil temperature, depth, and hydraulic conductivity. In addition, The MOD16 showed similar results with models at FR2; however, at P301, they yielded a correlation value of 0.85 and 0.21 for LSMs and MOD16, respectively. The later has lower correlation with in situ specifically in summer season caused by erroneous biophysical or meteorological inputs to the algorithms. The sensitivity analysis between soil moisture and turbulent fluxes, exhibited negative trend (especially for LE at P301) due to topography and snow cover. The results from this study are conducive to improvements in models and satellite based characterization of water and energy fluxes, especially at rugged terrain with high elevation, where observational experiments are difficult to conduct
A balancing act: Whose interests do bias response teams serve?
Using the organizational dimension of the multicontextual model for diverse learning environments, this study examined the philosophies and perspectives of bias response team leaders at 19 institutions. Through semi-structured interviews, administrators described theoretical approaches to bias response work that were primarily educational in nature and that aligned with institutional values. However, in the practice of responding to bias, administrators found themselves employing punitive frameworks, managing institutional public relations, and, on occasion, providing educational efforts. This tension between theory and practice created a balancing act for administrators to manage and multiple groups to which they perceived themselves as accountable
Free Speech Tensions: Responding to Bias on College and University Campuses
Despite the increasing development of bias response teams on college and university campuses, little scholarship has examined these teams and, in particular, team leaders’ approaches to understanding the role of free speech in responding to bias. Through semi-structured interviews, administrators who served on bias response teams at 19 predominantly White institutions described the need to balance free speech with other interests, recognize the nuance of First Amendment protections, and respond with educational conversations
Inventory Model with Ramp-type Demand and Price Discount on Back Order for Deteriorating Items under Partial Backlogging
Modeling of inventory problems provides a good insight to retailers and distributors to maintain stock of different items such as seasonal products, perishable goods and daily useable goods etc. The deterioration of all these items exists to a certain extent due to several reasons like mishandling, evaporation, decay, environmental conditions, transportation etc. It is found from the literature that previously many of the researchers have developed inventory model ignoring deterioration and drawn conclusion. In the absence of deterioration parameter, an inventory model cannot be completely realistic. In this paper, we have made an attempt to extend an inventory model with ramp-type demand and price discount on back order where deterioration was not taken into account. In our study, deterioration and constant holding cost are taken into consideration keeping all other parameters same. As a result, the inventory cost function is newly constructed in the presence of deterioration. The objective of this investigation is to obtain optimal cycle length, time of occurrence of shortages and corresponding inventory cost. This extended model is solved for minimum value of average inventory cost analytically. A theorem is framed to characterize the optimal solution. To validate the proposed model, a numerical example is taken and convexity of the cost function is verified. In order to study the effect of changes of different parameters of the inventory system on optimal cycle length, time of occurrence of shortages and average inventory cost, sensitivity analyses have been performed. Also, the numerical result and sensitivity analyses are graphically presented in the respective section of this paper to demonstrate the model. This study reveals that a better solution can be obtained in the presence of our newly introduced assumptions in the existing model
Transient Solution of an M/M/1 Retrial Queue with Reneging from Orbit
In this paper, the transient behavior of an M/M/1 retrial queueing model is analyzed where the customers in the orbit possess the reneging behavior. There is no waiting room in the system for the arrivals. If the server is not free when the occurrence of an arrival, the arriving customer moves to the waiting group, known as orbit and retries for his service. If the server is idle when an arrival occurs (either coming from outside the queueing system or from the waiting group), the arrival immediately gets the service and leaves the system. Each individual customer in the orbit, retrying for his service, becomes impatient and starts reneging from the orbit. Here the reneging of customers is due to the long wait in the orbit. Using continued fractions, the transient probabilities of orbit size for this model are derived explicitly. Average and variance of orbit size at time t are also obtained. Further, numerical illustrations of performance measures are done to analyze the effect of parameters
