Commissioning of proANUBIS: A proof-of-concept detector for the ANUBIS experiment
International audienceLong-lived particles (LLPs), predicted by various extensions of the Standard Model (SM), have become a key focus of the contemporary search programme for physics beyond the SM. To enhance LLP discovery potential at the LHC, the ANUBIS experiment has been proposed to instrument the ceiling of the ATLAS experiment's underground cavern with dedicated tracking detectors. This report summarises recent progress towards realising ANUBIS. Specifically, a key milestone has been achieved with the installation and commissioning of proANUBIS, a prototype that serves as a proof-of-concept for ANUBIS. We describe the proANUBIS setup, including its remotely-operated data acquisition system and automatic signal processing chain. The proANUBIS demonstrator is used to evaluate the detector performance under realistic conditions in the UX1 ATLAS experimental cavern, including readout synchronisation with the ATLAS experiment. Furthermore, proANUBIS allows for the direct measurement of relevant background processes in a representative location within the ATLAS cavern, providing input for the simulation of such processes for the future ANUBIS detector. The paper concludes with an update on the current status of the ANUBIS project and its roadmap toward a full-scale implementation in the ATLAS cavern
Search for heavy neutral leptons in B-meson decays
International audienceA search for long-lived heavy neutral leptons produced in B-meson decays and decaying to a final state is performed with data collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of . The results are interpreted in both lepton-number-conserving and lepton-number-violating scenarios. No significant excess is observed. Constraints are placed on the squared mixing element to the active muon neutrino, under the assumption that couplings to other lepton flavours are negligible, in the mass range of - GeV
Lecture éthique de la littérature pour enfants en traduction : Les passeuses anglophones des contes chinois et japonais (1880-1930)
International audienceAt the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, English-speaking children encountered Chinese and Japanese folklore in the form of adapted tales. Mostly translated by women, these tales became a crucible for new representations of China and Japan, profoundly shaping the imagination of young readers. However, as Riitta Oittinen points out: “Ideology and ethics always go hand in hand in translating for children, which is no innocent act”. We therefore propose an ethical reading of these English-language tales adapted by “invisible storytellers”, through the dual lens of postcolonial and feminist paradigms.Following Antoine Berman’s reflections, who defines “ethicity” in translation as the “respect for the original,” we will first examine the target-oriented and source-oriented strategies employed by these female go-betweens through a comparative approach to translation studies. While some superimpose an exotic, moral, or religious lens onto their tales, thus enacting a form of “ethnocentric violence”, others strive for a degree of “foreignization ,” notably by embracing multilingualism that welcomes linguistic otherness. We will then examine how certain go-betweens sought to disrupt “discursive power relations dominated by males” through the lens of a “transnational feminist ethics of translation”. In the wake of Feminist Translation Studies, we will analyze the strategies of adaptation and rewriting employed by some of these women to renew the models of femininity associated with China and Japan for English-speaking children. We will also bring to light a network of solidarity among these go-betweens, a solidarity highlighted both in their paratext and through their transnational collaborations.Au tournant du XIXe et du XXe siècle, les enfants anglophones découvrent le folklore chinois et japonais adapté sous la forme de contes. Ces contes, majoritairement traduits par des femmes, deviennent ainsi le creuset de nouvelles représentations associées à la Chine et au Japon, agissant puissamment sur l’imaginaire du jeune lectorat. Or, comme l’indique Riitta Oittinen : « L’idéologie et l’éthique vont toujours de pair dans la traduction pour enfants, ce qui n’est pas un acte innocent ». Nous aimerions donc proposer une lecture éthique de ces contes anglophones adaptés par des « conteuses invisibles », en suivant un double paradigme postcolonial et féministe.Suivant les réflexions d’Antoine Berman qui définit l’« éthicité » en traduction comme le « respect de l’original », nous étudierons tout d’abord les stratégies ciblistes et sourcières mises en place par ces passeuses à travers une traductologie comparée. Si certaines surimposent un prisme exotique, moral ou religieux au sein de leur conte, manifestant une forme de « violence ethnocentrique », d’autres œuvrent à une certaine « étrangéisation », notamment à travers un plurilinguisme accueillant l’altérité linguistique. Nous verrons ensuite comment certaines passeuses cherchent à bouleverser les « relations de pouvoir discursives dominées par les hommes », à l’angle d’une « éthique féministe transnationale de la traduction ». Dans le sillage des Feminist Translation Studies, nous étudierons les stratégies d’adaptation et de réécriture mises en place par certaines passeuses afin de renouveler les modèles féminins associés à la Chine et au Japon pour les enfants anglophones. Nous ferons également émerger un réseau de solidarité entre passeuses, une solidarité mise en exergue au sein de leur péritexte mais aussi à travers leurs collaborations transnationales

Combining LIDAR, all-sky camera, and ECMWF-ERA5 reanalysis to investigate contrail formation and evolution over Clermont-Ferrand, France on June 2, 2023
International audienceContrails formed by aircraft in the upper troposphere contribute to anthropogenic climate forcing. However, the conditions driving their formation and persistence remain incompletely understood. This study combines a ACTRIS/EARLINET ground-based LIDAR, all-sky camera imagery, ADS-B aircraft tracking, and ECMWF-ERA5 reanalysis to analyse contrails formation and evolution over Clermont-Ferrand, France, on June 2, 2023. Twelve contrails are documented throughout the day, including five persistent and seven non-persistent contrails. Persistent contrails formed at 10.36 km altitude or lower are observed under ice-supersaturated conditions (relative humidity with respect to ice, RHi > 105 %) and at temperatures between 217 and 223 K. Non-persistent contrails produced by higher altitudes aircrafts, are associated with lower RHi mostly below 100 % and colder temperatures (214-217 K). The horizontal persistent contrail widths range from 0.53 ± 0.10 to 1.60 ± 0.44 km (all-sky camera estimation) and 0.35 ± 0.14 to 1.90 ± 0.32 km (LIDAR estimation), and vertical extents varied from 340 ± 10 to 440 ± 20 m. The optical properties of these contrails have also been estimated by LIDAR. Aerosol backscatter coefficient vary from 0.02 to 0.05 km-1 sr-1, scattering ratios from 8 to 20, volume linear depolarization from 0.13 to 0.24 and particle linear depolarization from 0.17 to 0.45. The maximum contrail observation duration by camera is 180 min. The study highlights the potential of ground-based remote sensing for contrail monitoring
Harnessing ecological niche modeling of Listeria monocytogenes for biopreservation system engineering
International audienceBiopreservation is a microbiome engineering technology based on the use of microorganisms as protective cultures and/or their metabolites, which can be used to mitigate the presence of pathogens in food. This study explores the potential of ecological niche modeling to guide the selection of biopreservation candidates. A luminescent strain of Listeria monocytogenes was utilized in a multivariate high-throughput competition assay, assessing a combination of abiotic factors (i.e. glucose, NaCl, pH in a factorial design) and biotic variables (i.e. various competing microorganisms). The resulting data were analyzed using two parallel methods: k-means clustering and Response Surface Modeling (RSM). Integrating the outputs of these approaches allowed for grouping competitors based on both inhibition strength and niche modeling characteristics. Competitors were categorized into five groups, distinguished by their inhibition levels against L. monocytogenes and the shape of their response surfaces, with some groups displaying complementary features. Weighted Niche Reduction (WNR) calculations derived from model predictions identified the strain combination Carnobacterium maltaromaticum CP14 and Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides PTF6 as having enhanced inhibitory properties. This study highlights promising possibilities for the bottom-up engineering of synthetic communities for biopreservation applications
