In February 2017, D., a 12-year-old student at the Liceo Francés A.C. in Mexico City, suffered fractures in both arms after falling onto a stack of gym mats in a facility that was supposed to be closed or supervised. After three hours spent locating his family, and during which he received no additional medical attention at the infirmary, he was transferred to the hospital, where he underwent surgery, he was transferred to a hospital, where he underwent surgery. As a result of the accident, he lost approximately 20% of the mobility in one arm. Five months later, when his parents—Carmen and Íñigo, Spanish nationals residing in Mexico—attempted to re-enroll their two children, the school conditioned the enrollment on signing a letter waiving all liability for the incident. The family was then faced with a critical dilemma: Sign the waiver to ensure the academic and social continuity of their children, thereby avoiding a costly and emotionally draining legal battle in an unfamiliar judicial system; Refuse to sign and initiate legal and reputational action against a powerful institution with diplomatic ties and the capacity to prolong the proceedings.2

PRESIDENT INFANTINO: THE CHALLENGE OF RESTORING CREDIBILITY TO FIFA

    Get PDF
The case addresses the dilemma faced by FIFA President Gianni Infantino in the days leading up to the 2022 Qatar World Cup, amid intense public criticism and calls for a boycott. The decision to award the first World Cup in the Middle East was made in 2010 during the presidency of Joseph Blatter, when Infantino was Secretary General of UEFA. Since then, the choice of Qatar has raised suspicions of irregularities and bribery, severely undermining FIFA’s legitimacy. With growing international pressure just weeks before the tournament began, Infantino was forced to define a communication strategy in response to an institutional crisis that threatened not only FIFA’s reputation but also its credibility as a trustworthy leader. The case places students in Infantino’s position, challenging them to reflect on how to respond—whether with silence, defense, or critical distancing— while balancing the pressures from sponsors, governments, media, and civil society organizations.1

Path planning is fundamental in autonomous navigation, especially in industrial environments with priorities for time efficiency and optimal resource management. This work examines the Probabilistic Roadmap Method (PRM) and the A* algorithm, comparing their path generation time, trajectory distance, and tracking time to determine which performs better under these metrics. For the evaluation, both algorithms were implemented in MATLAB, and the CoppeliaSim simulator was used to model the movement of a differential robot in different environments inspired by industrial work cells. Both algorithms stand out for their versatility, as path generation is independent of the type of robot, allowing their application in differential, Ackermann, and omnidirectional robots with minimal adjustments to navigation. Choosing the right path-planning algorithm can significantly enhance the performance of robotic systems by reducing operational delays and optimizing efficiency in industrial environments. Understanding the differences between these algorithms is crucial for improving navigation in structured spaces, such as industrial work cells, where safety and efficiency are critical factors. By providing a detailed analysis of their performance, this research contributes to developing more efficient robotic systems, particularly in scenarios where precise and reliable navigation is essential.Revista Aristahttp://revistaaristas.tij.uabc.mx/index.php/revista_aristas/article/view/41

In this work, five new chelating resins (MRnBz) functionalized with N-benzyl bis(carbamoyl)carboxylic acid molecules (BzbCCA) on their surface were prepared to study the metal ion (Mn+) adsorption properties in water. MRnBz resins were characterized by FTIR, TGA, FESEM and EDS. The surface charge as a function of pH and the chemical adsorption of Mn+ on the surface were evaluated through zeta potential (z) measurements. The Mn+ adsorption capacity of MRnBz resins was evaluated using Pb2+, Cu2+, Cd2+, and Ni2+ mixture model solutions at low concentrations. MRnBz resins displayed selective adsorption of Pb2+ even in the presence of a molar excess of other cations, due to the intrinsic affinity and selectivity of BzbCCA molecules for this metal ion. The adsorption isotherms of Pb2+ showed that the adsorption capacity of MRnBz resins was influenced by the spacer chain length. In addition, the resins were characterized by FTIR, TGA, FESEM and EDS after the Mn+ adsorption process, confirming the Mn+ loading on the resin surface.Royal Society of Chemistryhttps://www.rsc.org/journals-books-databases

    Get PDF

This study evaluates the performance of a Quantum Genetic Algorithm (QGA) executed on quantum devices. The algorithm was implemented in MATLAB and Python and deployed on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) platform. The QGA was utilized to optimize a set of continuous single-variable functions. The implementation employed the Hadamard quantum gate to initialize the population and the Ry rotation gate for mutation and crossover. The findings revealed significant differences in execution time and costs were observed between the two implementations, undescoring the performance of quantum devices available on AWS. The results demonstrate that the QGA can achieve optimal solutions in a few generations, suggesting its potential for efficiently solving complex problems. However, the costs and availability of quantum devices remain restrictive. This work exemplifies the potential of leveraging AWS cloud-based quantum computing platforms for the research and development of quantum algorithms.Computación y Sistemashttp://148.204.65.169/ojs/index.php/CyS/article/view/5178/3753

    No full text
This paper presents the development of a LiDAR-based object classification system using machine learning and signal processing. The proposal explores Support Vector Machines (SVM) and neural networks to classify terrain with the help of a LiDAR that scans an area similarly to how a picture is taken. This project involves the processing of data to generate a point cloud that lets us visualize the scans taken by the Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR). The dataset was built by taking multiple scans of three types of terrain, flat, grassy, and rocky. This paper shows experimental results of machine learning models built around LiDAR-acquired data and small datasets, it also shows point cloud visualizations and a simple signal processing technique.SPIE DIGITAL LIBRARYhttps://www.spiedigitallibrary.org/conference-proceedings-of-spie/13136/3028632/LiDAR-based-classification-of-objects-and-terrain/10.1117/12.3028632.shor
